House of Cards discussion

Classic diversionary tactic.

Just finished. Wow is right.

Note: The spoiler below is a major spoiler dealing with the very end of the season. If you are watching the show and plan to finish it, do NOT click it. Seriously. Don't.

Spoiler:

Are we to assume that the entire kidnapping plot was orchestrated by the Underwoods, but killing the man was a direct result of the article? I had felt throughout that the kidnapping was being handled by one of the campaigns, then that last quote. Damn.

Overall a much better season than 3, maybe better than 2 IMO. (The initial season still rocks in my world)

I'm three episodes in and I'm liking it so far. Much better start than last season.

Spoiler:

I have no idea why you'd assume that. The way I saw it, it's the war they're starting that is the direct result of the article.

I have been known to completely miss points / have very clear points sail over my head. That said:

Spoiler:

I was looking into a potential double-meaning behind the last quote from Frank. Probably it's because the better half and I have been mainlining Game of Thrones to try to finish (we just started the series about 3 weeks ago) before the next season starts, so I am in an "everything is a lie and a plot" mindset.

Spoiler Edit: thinking back, perhaps his comment was more because he knew that if they came out swinging (with the speech to the terrorists) he knew that they would kill the hostage, most likely publicly, and the nation would be behind his war. At least that makes more sense than my initial thinking...

Pretty good season and much better than season 3. There were some parts that dragged but it really starts sprinting 3/4 through. At the end of season 3 I was ambivalent about season 4, now I'm excited for season 5. This is all thanks to one major storyline and that is...

Spoiler:

...the article by Hammerschidt and the potential to take them down. I'm sure they'll win re-election, it wouldn't be much of a season 5 otherwise, but I'm excited they're setting up the fall of the Underwoods. I'm hoping it plays out in 5. We'll see.

If there is no fall, and they weasel out of it then I may be done. I'm pretty much just watching to see them take a dive.

But I'm hopeful, the name of the show is House of Cards aferall and I'm ready to see those cards come tumbling down.

I don't think we'll see the Underwoods fall without seeing Claire becoming President. That was their original plan and the show likes to stick with that, for good and bad.

So, is anyone watching the new season? I am almost done, and have many questions... mainly because there is a lot from last season that I don't specifically recall.

Wife and I will be hopping on this one soon. Too many good shows to binge these days! I need to watch a refresher.

Just finished S5.

Spoiler:

Sadly, it may have jumped the ole shark for me.

I haven't finished it yet, I think I have 1 or 2 more to go. This season hasn't grabbed me at all and is really going way into the realm of simply absurd.

Yeah, that's pretty much how I feel.

Just started last night, we were able to keep it at one episode. We will see where this goes. Seriously, all I can think of when I see that author character is "man he looks dopey." Like not critical of his work, his face just always seems "dopey" like he just never has much going on. I guess if that is what I walked away from the first episode with and your comments above, I am worried for the rest of the season.

I also only watched the first episode and I really don't want to watch more. It wasn't bad. Just seemed more of the same.
I'm going to force myself to watch the rest of the season, but I think I'll be ready to move on afterwards, even if it ends on a cliffhanger.

Episode 12:

Spoiler:

Seriously? Frank pushes his SoS down 4 stairs and she's unconscious?

I thought,

Spoiler:

he killed her, no? If she wasn't dead she would be telling her story.

Spoiler:

Last episode we saw there was someone saying they hoped she would recover so I assumed a coma or otherwise badly injured and unable to communicate.

Yeah, about that...

Spoiler:

If the shark hadn't already jumped for me, that pretty much did it. Even Kevin Spacey seemed to be mailing in his lines at that scene... "HELP! The Secretary has fallen!"

Nah, that would have been even weirder. She fell down 4 carpeted steps.

Spoiler:

I actually fell down a flight of stairs and died. Well actually I just broke my arms. Ok not really but I did twist my ankle. hmmm actually I just hurt my bum bum.

The real jumping the shark moment was having Doug do all this crazy stuff without sleeping with Francis or Claire.

They're just dropping bodies left and right. It's like a game of Crusader Kings 2 but without the manure bombs.

Yeah, I thought that was sloppy and a cop out.

Just finished episode 5 and 6. I havn't read any of your comments for fear of spoilers.

Spoiler:

I own a Gear VR headset and I cringe when I see him playing that combat sim. He has a glove on one hand and nothing in the other, simulating holding a rifle. It doesn't work that way! Also the continuity in this season has been atrocious! placement of body position and props between cuts totally out of whack!

THANK YOU! That was driving me nuts as well.

Found the clip

Could just be muscle memory.

I know there are VR systems that want to move in that direction. But even those have some kind of hand-held or hand-attached hardware to mimic the gun, while in the clip his hands are empty.

Edit: looking closer, there is a wired device attached to his right hand.

Yes, but the Gear VR doesn't actually have that peripheral. It just triggered me. My wife gave me sh*t for making a deal about it.

Should probably focus on the bigger plot holes and suspension of disbelief that is required.

I think the VR thing is like 173847497489484 on the list at this point. Not even sure I can make it through the last episode.

You should. If you've suffered this far, you should stay in, if only for that last line of dialog.
