American Truck Simulator catch-all

I'm thinking of dropping Start Engine off of L-Stick Down. I forgot that it piggy-backs on Accelerate, so I just need to pull the R-Trigger to fire 'er up.

Maybe I'll toss Side Mirror Rotation in there instead.

Hmmm...

In other news, this game kicks ass. Can't believe how well it performs.

Sure are a lot of people driving refurbished 50's vintage cars, though.

1st mod install.

$150 speeding ticket vs. $1K?

Yes, please!

Yep, getting that for sure. Overzealous cops while I was on the way back to LA nearly cleaned me out. I'm trying to save up for my own truck here, guys.

$150 seems too low to me. I guess if you speed the whole way on a trip from Vegas to SF you'll rack up a lot of fines even at $150, but on shorter trips it's like why even bother knowing the speed limit?

I turned off fines after I got one while being passed by another truck and a cop while doing 5 over.

So I gather you only get ticketed if there's a police cruiser around? That's awesome.

I rescind what I said before. I got dinged for $1k when I hit an offramp, speed limit changed from 65 to 35, and a cop was right next to me. If the game isn't going to give me a grace period to slow down, I'm not paying $1k for speeding fines.

EDIT: The download link on that mod site scares me. Plus it plays the "Guess the right download link!" game, and I hate that. Going back to no mods, I refuse to frequent sites like that.

Sister site ETS2.lt is where I get all my ETS2 mods and I've never had an issue with downloads they link from sharemods.com. But I just now visited sharemods.com with my ad blocker turned off, and uff da. Reloaded with blocker back on, and there's nothing but a green Free Download button.

So in summary, those sites are all right, and also install an ad blocker.

I run every mod I download through Trend Micro, and the one I linked is clean.

Another nice feature not mentioned is a certain grace-period on the speed limits. In the US, most highway patrol look the other way when going 5 mph over the speed limit, even when passing through radar traps. At 10 and over, you're cruising at your own risk.

After installing the mod I just set my cruise control to 59-60 mph, as I typically do in real life, and had police cars just rolling right on by me in in the next lane over. No fuss, no muss.

.............

In other news, I continue to be impressed with the game. I wasn't sure if I'd suffer from a Been There, Done That syndrome as the trappings & mechanics are so similar to ETS2, right down to the menus and such. But man I'm just in 7th heaven with ATS.

It just captures the West Coast feel with shocking fidelity. From the coastal highways of the south to the wide-open agriculture plains of the Central Valley & north. It's condensed for sure, which is a bit of a shocker on a subconscious level, but what's there is golden.

If this is any indication of what to expect as new states roll out in future DLC, then I might as well just link my bank account with SCS for auto-deductions the moment new stuff goes up for sale. I think it's going to be incredible when they eventually make big progress into the US map.

5 you're fine, 10 you're mine.

For anyone who doesn't want to risk mods, but still wants to just axe out speeding fines, you can disable police similarly to the way you would in ETS 2. Crack open the config file, and change the g_console and g_developer settings to 1. Then launch the game, hit tilde, and run 'uset g_police "0"'. No more irritation from fines you wouldn't get in real life.

Alternatively, I've found that just staying out of California helps a ton.

Good to know, and thanks for the pointer to which button is the actual download link. What ad blocker do you use?

uBlock (also called uBlock Origin) and Disconnect. I use them both for everything: Chrome, Firefox, and Safari, in OS X and Windows.

I think what is getting me fined is the frequent changes of speed limit when you are going through a town...and not obviously signed ones. I was going through some dump of a town, and within about 2 miles the speed limit went 55..40..30...55...30. Very reminiscent of that spot on the outskirts of Amsterdam where I've paid enough fines to actually OWN the bleeding road.

That's realistic Fresno. One of the only speeding tickets I've ever gotten was on Nees Ave from a cop camping out a spot right after the speed limit drops.

That's the very reason I try to stay out of the UK in ETS2 (he says, to a resident of actual-UK).

I just checked, it was Stockton. On the road through town, before there's a sharp left turn that leads to the on ramp for route 5.

I'm just hoping someone mods in some European trucks - these sh*tty 16 gear things with the steering wheel on the wrong side are getting on me wick

Couldn't stop laughing at this (NSFW because McIlroy brothers):

And the map literally stops one town before the one I grew up in.

So long as they mod in their inability to actually haul the loads, sure.

Heh... "The pictures of the boys look like a bunch of 'about the author' portraits from math textbooks."

Admit it. Everyone who's playing is driving around as either the guy they used or Steampunk Girl.

Nah, I went for the serial killer vibe:

I told myself I would wait on purchasing the game but that video was amazing. I may be picking this up sooner rather than later.

Plus, I just got a 65" TV and amazing surround. Once that is hooked up and I move my Steam Box, it will be like I'm really there!

I'm glad they liked it, but I'm still mad at them over their Bombshell review.

My resolve to not buy this one on release week is weakening.

Real-skin mods are already dropping, swapping in licensed-brand textures.

Yeah, they're really protective of that Hollywood sign...

I don't get why SCS can't charge those brands for advertising them in their environments. Having to license them doesn't make sense to me - it's advertising for those companies. The way business works like this is just a mystery to me.
