SWTOR: Catch-All

From what I hear Knight is one of the better repub stories. Smuggler is a little predictable but funny as hell - make sure to pick the sarcastic dialogue choices. I went the Han Solo loveable rogue route but according to some of my buddies you can easily become a dark side crime lord.

I've heard that the Knight was straightforward and not as interesting as the others. Haven't played it far enough to really comment on that, but so far it's well-done enough that I don't have any complaints.

From what I remember of playing the Empire side with my wife, all of the stories seem to work a lot better if you don't worry about gaming the light-side/dark-side system and just try to play a character.

(That said, my wife went 100% light side with her Sith Inquisitor and it was hilarious. She steadfastly refused to play the other Siths' reindeer games, and they were all freaked out at how subtle her schemes must be.)

Oh, one nice thing for people coming back to the game after a long absence - companion storylines are no longer tied to their companion level, and automatically progress based on your position in the class story. No need to mine companion gifts for everyone; just the one(s) you plan on taking with you the most while you solo.

The Knight story is the only one I've completed (up to the Revan expansion) and, ultimately, I was a bit disappointed in it. Has a lot of good individual moments and beats, but it's highly repetitive in terms of many of the middle-plot story quests and in terms of decisions. It's mostly, do I kill this defeated boss or don't I? Every now and then it breaks away a bit from that and those are, not coincidentally, the best moments. (YMMV, of course.)

I think they're also dependent on whether you have done the previous one, particularly if it's one where you actually have to DO something rather than just talking to them. In the Trooper class, I'm stuck on Jorgen's missions as I can't work out how to get to rescue his chums...every way I try seems blocked by super-elites. Still, as Elara is my maid for all seasons, it's not a massive issue.

That would explain why they all want to talk to me. I thought they were just annoyed that I'd left Jaesa and Vette hanging for a couple of years...

At least I was able to work out why none of them were wearing pants when I logged in.

As a BH, does anyone else get tired of Mako constantly disapproving of everything you as a "dark side leaning" merc? I want to use her as a companion (primarily pre 4.0 due to her healing) because she seems to have some depth, but the tisk-tisking is getting annoying. I dont want my way of playing to impact my progress... idk maybe that isnt possible now post-4.0.

Are there any other class/companion pairings that annoy you?

Also, I am grown up enough to admit that I have a serious thing Nadia Grell on my Jedi Sage. Why cant this be like Dragon Age and let me romance a same gender companions. We would be an awesome power couple.

Sigh.

The lack of same sex companion romances was a huge beef with the game from before launch. Makeb was Bioware's half-assed attempt at redressing this. I dunno if anyone from Revan/the new expansion is SS-romanceable.

There is. At least from a male point of view.

As a male I was also very annoyed with how far they allow you to romance Nadia. Definitely not a very Jedi thing to do.

I take it you've not tried the Jedi Knight class then ?

Only one class at max. I use the other ones as twinks primarily for pvp and have only leveled them primarily with pvp. Up to now i've always been 10+ levels over the content that i had no need for companions except for crafting.

Both the Hutt and Revan expansions have a "romance" of sorts that can be same sex, but as neither are characters that join your crew, the scope of them is limited to brief interactions in the midst of acquiring or completing quests.

Makeb story content downed. Pausing to overlevel a bit before starting Shadow of Revan.

I thought that was a pretty neat story on the Imperial side. Definitely felt more involving than most of the original planetary stories.

It's my understanding that overleveling isnt a thing anymore. That all content scales to your level.

It doesn't - each world has a level cap, but you can still be under the cap, and the content won't scale down to you (at least that's my observation). In any case, I'm just overleveling by buying some sweet spaceship parts and finally 100%ing missions I hadn't been able to do before; not being grindy.

I thought the Smuggler story was a bit disjointed overall, but I played it as a female Twi'lek just to get away from being a Han Solo clone. What I loved about the smuggler story is every time a "I'm in it for the money" sort of response came up I usually took it. It sounded funnier coming out in a female voice for some reason.

The Knight story was the most "epic" overall (I believe that's the one that is loosely considered canon for the game), but found it a bit humorless.

With both of those said, I would just go with an approach of leveling 2 characters, preferable with different attitudes (i.e. don't do a Jedi Knight and consular).

Out of curiosity, has anyone tried a Knight or Consular that routinely makes dark side choices? Does it go anywhere interesting with how you're viewed by the Order? Or do they just brush it off with a few disappointed/condemning dialog quotes and that's about it?

No, Ran's right on this one; you can't be overleveled any more. Content isn't scaled down to you, you're capped at being scaled up over it.

Ok.. caught in my own pedantic petard. I can still be underleveled for content though, correct? I'm aiming to get closer to the Shadows of Revan cap before I start it by having fun blowing stuff up in space combat.

You have to work really, really hard to be underleveled at this point. I'm not sure it's possible to stay that way for very long, if at all.

So, I got a little bored and reinstalled SWTOR. I hadn't played since the beginning of the game. All my toons are in the old army of one guild. Can anyone point me in the direction of the gwj guild?

My wife and I rolled new Sith characters on Harbinger since we have a couple friends there. Maybe the new leveling curve is nice overall, but the starting planets are kinda janky now. It's kind of hard to learn how to Assassin when none of my new abilities work because I don't have a double-bladed saber. Back when the game launched I was given the right weapons for my advanced class right on time. Now not only does that quest hit you several levels too late, it no longer gives you the items you need.

As a returning player I'm savvy enough to hit the commendation vendor on Dromund Kaas or pick up some crafting skills and make what I need, but a true newbie could really have a rough time of it.

Credit where it's due: running through Korriban gave me exactly enough special currency to pick up a mod-able weapon once I found the right vendor.

Yea it is janky if you dont know to goto Fleet as soon as you turn level 10. Still buddies of mine just created new toons and they got what they needed. FYI one thing that is different than before is that it's given to you in a container. If you dont notice or open the container you can run around without your advance class tools.

As soon as you pick an advanced class you get an item box in your inventory that has the weapon and offhand for that class. Both orange. Did that not happen for you?

Finished the Revan chapter over the weekend and, before jumping into Fallen Empire, decided to try and do a couple of the extra items in the Mission panel on your ship. The first one sends to me Oricon and I'm just plugging through it when it gets to the final mission, which it designates as an Op. No forewarning, no explanation, just, "Oh, by the way, this quest chain you initiated 90 minutes ago? Now that you're at the end, you'll need a group of 8 to 16 to continue."

Ummm. Bite me.

I'll get over it, but as I'm still going to tackle the Revan epilogue mission before jumping to FE, I'm really hoping that won't do the same thing. (grumble, grumble)

Yeah, I even get annoyed when I have to do a flashpoint. Even if you can do them Solo now I just hate having to commit that time, during regular missions I can step off to the side while I step away.

There's an option to do it solo.

If it did, I managed to miss it on both my Trooper and my Inquisitor. Then again, I have about half a dozen item-filled boxes in my inventory from old preorder stuff so it'd be easy to miss.

This!

Plus they even give you the option to use a battle bot. Maybe not now with the changes to companions though.

AnimeJ wrote:

Hmm. If there was I didn't see it. The Flashpoint missions always had the solo option in dialog, but I don't recall seeing one before accepting this quest. The only two entryways to the quest instance don't let you in without being part of an Ops party. Any ideas?

(Edited a couple times for clarity.)
