Stardock is remaking Star Control!

I have to say there's nothing I can think of in Star Control that would massively benefit from a tech update. I replay the Ur Quan Masters every now and again and the whole game is very much of its time.

I'd be happy with a combination of 1&2, the story mode of 2 with the 3D star map of 1.

For anyone actually interested in the game, Brad did an interview about the program and some of the development so far.

That's what I thought... about Star Control 3!!!

A $100 founder package is one thing. Asking me to fill out a survey to participate in testing is different. I wouldn't have filled out the survey and provide my information if they'd tell me it was simply a $100 founder's package.

This kind of "deal" should simply be on a store page, not through a private selection.

What better to find people likely want to spend money on the new game then those who would sign up for an alpha test? It's very smart marketing to have your target audience find you and indicate they are curious about your product.

I'm interested but I'm not going to pay it any mind till it is out. Like Quintin I remember being excited about SC3.

There never was a Star Control 3.

There never was a Star Control 3.

There never was a Star Control 3.

(just like there never was a MoO 3)

Puppets, baby.

Puppets.

Seriously MoO3 and StarCon3 are my biggest gaming disappointments ever.

I honestly didn't know a SC3 was made.

FMV ftw!

They've talked about their expensive Early Access programs before. They say the whole point is to discourage everybody but the most enthusiastic fans from signing up early, and that dramatically improves the quality of feedback they get as they develop the game. It's kind of annoying for those of us who want in but not at that price, but I can understand why they go that route.

It's also a bonus to those who do pay the larger chunk up front as you end up spending less on all the DLC and expansions, assuming you will want them.

How they could get the Syreen so wrong is beyond me.

I mean it's all right there for you already in the previous games...

Pretty much this.

I don't have a problem with their $100 price point. I have a problem with them asking me to fill out a survey first, then saying $100. I would not have bothered giving them information if they were up front with their expectations. I get that the original email said something about Founders Program but that meant nothing to me.

I understand that and I've passed along the feedback about it.

I appreciate Stardock looking for solutions!

That is actually pretty cool.

Star Control: Origins was announced today along with the opening of the Founders program!

Ars Technica also has a first look.

EEEEEEEEEEEEE

Star Control 2, still one of the all time bests. Please don't screw this up.

I'm looking forward to this, but I'm going to hold off on joining the Founders Program til I see some combat and examples of the new aliens. At first I was looking forward to playing with the Spathi and Yehats again, but it looks like the aliens will have to be different from what we saw in the first Star Control series.

Even though Stardock has the naming and publishing rights to the Star Control franchise, it does not have the rights to use any of the Star Control aliens or story material in the first two games. All of that remains the property of original Star Control creators Fred Ford and Paul Reiche III...

...we won’t see the return of any familiar alien faces in Star Control: Origins—no Chenjesu, no Arilou, and no menacing green Ur-Quan. The company is spinning up all new aliens and an all new story to fill in the gap after the Androsynth rebellion but before the Ur-Quan wars

Yeah, my enthusiasm cooled quite a bit when I realized that none of the charm that the races of the original universe contributed to my joy of the game would be there. In fact, it will only share the name "Star Control". I'll have to see some stupendous reviews to prove that it feels Star Controlly and to get over my dislike of Wordell.

So, basically, Stardock ponied up for the right to call their game Star Control, without it really being Star Control.

Stardock wants to throw a *party*, but they are not *happy campers*.

It looks Starflighty enough for me so far.

I like that planet exploration will be a thing, but the planet in the video seemed very small. Hopefully there will be some larger ones as well. Fighting and collecting on the planet surface was a cool aspect of Starflight.

Yeah... I was (am!) a big Star Control 2 fan, and right off the bat I'm having trouble imagining a reasonably story that will (1) introduce a bunch of new alien races that for some reason were not seen or even mentioned in Star Control 2, and (2) *not* mention any of the alien races that we know from playing Star Control 2 are "neighbors" of humanity.

Around the time that Ashes of the Singularity was announced and released into early access, Stardock also announced and released a game called Servo. I was interested in Servo because it reminded me of another old game that I had enjoyed. And so, I shelled out a bit of money for Servo, thinking that a stable company like Stardock, with a demonstrated commitment to finishing and maintaining their games, would eventually release the game in a playable state.

Servo got some minor updates in the first few months and then nothing. Eventually, there's a very quiet announcement that Stardock has severed it's relationship with Servo's developer (wait, what? it wasn't an in-house project?). The developer claimed that they were going to move ahead with Servo independently. Some months later, they announce that they've ceased all development on Servo and ceased selling the game on Steam.

Nope, not cool with Stardock any more.

Also, Ashes of the Singularity turned out to be a totally boring not-Supreme Commander.

This. If all they got for their money was the name, that does not bode well.

The video did not increase my anticipation for the game, either. This one stays on my "buy only if the GWJ Forum Effect goes up to 11" list.
