Rousey benefited from the fact that the sport has been tremendously immature for so long and her judo was good enough to dominate a very weak field. If the best the field could muster was Meisha Tate or Kat Zingano, the business of training female fighters really needed more time to develop.

Probably the best example of this I can think of is how seriously female fighters take cutting weight. Gina Carano missed weight several times and even Rousey fights really close to her walking around weight. Both fighters last night weighed in at 134 pounds nearly 24 hours before the fight and Rousey looked visibly smaller and quite a bit smaller on fight night. In interviews, she states that she puts on15 pounds from her fight weight to look good for movies and public appearances to 150. One can assume her in shape weight is really close to the 134 weigh in.

Holm otoh states that her training weight is a whopping 155 and she cuts down to 134 to make weight. I assume she hits the IV's immediately after the weighs and puts 2 gallons of water back in her system to enter the octagon at close to 150. She certainly looked every bit of that.

When a dude gives away 15 pounds in a fight, he gets his ass handed to him. I think we can say with some certainty now that the same applies for women.

Good observation, my only correction is that IVs are banned (it's only been a month or two though).

Ryan Hall is a wizard! I love that man's jiujitsu. I wish I had the time to visit his school.

Yeah when I was heavy into jiujitsu several years ago I spent months trying to mimic his triangle choke game....needless to say I never got close.

Not taking away anything from Connor's skills, he's good, but he got real lucky last night.

Yeah, 13 seconds is sort of a letdown.

Aldo-McGregor II in early-mid 2016? At this point the challenge will be finding a venue big enough for it.

For sure a bit of a let down, but he took a good shot right after he punched Aldo. There was a significant chance of him losing consciousness from it.

And down goes Connor McGregor

All Dana's money fighters getting put down.

It happens. I guess I'm not *that* surprised. Diaz looked so much bigger (and longer) than McGregor. It also looked like McGregor was wearing down some in the second round, like he was putting a lot of muscle behind his punches and not doing much to Diaz except making him bloody.

Diaz also exploited McGregor's main weakness: He's not good on the ground.

If you can, watch the fifth round of the Holm-Tate fight. That's why you never give up.

I love the Diaz Bros. so much. Really happy for Nate.

Good for Cupcake finally getting to the top.

i hate Conor lost - I was all aboard the hype train for years and loving it, but he got over-ambitious moving up two classes, and Nate was the perfect trap matchup: long, lean, crazy tough chin, and cocky himself to the point where the psychological stuff didn't stick. He showed incredible toughness to take those shots and stay in it to put Conor away.

Not a fan of McGregor, but gained some respect after this post fight interview.

Yup. Holm had the fight on the cards easy. All she had to do is live through the next 90 seconds. She panicked and lost the belt for it.

Lot of class shown by Conor in the loss. Might be if root for him in the rematch w/Aldo?

Eagerly anticipating Eddie jabbing the fook out of Conor tonight.

The whole card looks utterly amazing. Should be a blast.

It lived up to the hype, stunning performance by McGregor, laser precision.

Considering the undercard started off with two impressive first-round knockouts, I was expecting a lot of filler for the rest of the night. Then the next six fights all go to the final round, and all but one go the distance. And the main event is over in the second round, although it very easily could have been over in the first.

The Welterweight championship fight was awesome. I still don't know how the hell Thompson survived that fourth round, let alone managed a majority draw. Rounds 2 and 3 were basically coin flips to me, but he took round 5 definitively. Would not mind a rematch.

Loved McGregor's post-fight comment: "...I want to take this time to apologize to ABSOLUTELY NOBODY!" Don't ever change, ya psycho.

Very interested in this MMAAA.

Well, UFC 207 went about as expected. Particularly the Rousey and Nunes fight.

Rousey needs to start talking to VInce McMahon now though her contract there wouldn't be as big now that she isn't considered invincible.

I always felt like Rousey was a legit Olympic athlete who dominated a newish sport (women's MMA) through superior athleticism and her "tough" persona. Once the technical skill of her opponents started to rise (Holm is a champion kick boxer and Nunes is part of the 2nd gen of women's MMA fighters) and her mystique was gone (a la Tyson), she was done.

Her "tough" persona always seemed to come from a place of insecurity. The (seemingly heartfelt) anger, the poor sportsmanship, the inability to demonstrate any humility or introspection? Those aren't harbingers of mental toughness; they are warning flags for insecurity, pain and fear. A classic bully projecting onto others to hide what's inside. Given her upbringing, NONE of this is a surprise.

I love it in sports when a bully/spiritually weak athlete is humbled. It confirms my bias that true mental "toughness" (if there is such a thing) has less to do with winning % and more to do with the maturity and balance of the individual. As an introspective person, this feels good and gives me hope that the universe bends toward justice (a sign of my own hubris?).

As a human, I feel for her. She appears to be a broken person who has always been hurting on the inside and I hope she finds the peace she deserves.

I'm surprised that Rousey hadn't learned to defend herself. That was amateurish boxing on her part. Probably some poor coaching, too.

Mighty Mouse is a beast.

The Hottie got jacked up.

How many folks here have ever heard of Lucas Matthysse?

He is currently ESPN's 10th ranked boxing welterweight. He has a record of 38-4 with 35 KO's. He's a pretty damned good boxer, but he is nowhere near in the same orbit as Floyd Mayweather.

I would bet my car that he would beat Conor McGregor in a 12 round boxing match.

Is this one of those things where a really low-ranked boxer would beat a top MMA pro in a boxing match and vice-versa?

McGregor has been mouthing off that he could beat Mayweather and it looks like he may have just baited his way into a freakshow of a fight. Since Mayweather is the bigger earner, it looks like it will necessarily be a boxing match.

It is clearly a publicity stunt and a grab for filthy lucre as McGregor's hands are at best "good for MMA" (which is a bit like saying someone is "office hot").

It's just something to argue about just because. Wake me up when they actually get in the ring.

Good sir is referring to the "hottest girl in summer school" or "dumbest kid in AP class" effects.
