Fallout 4 Catch-All 2.0

Not everything that looks like a button should be pressed like a button.

I'll be taking it apart and fixing it.

Almost done installing (PS4).

Was it the LED light near the top? If so, I appear to have broken mine to. It didn't fall completely out, but it did push down and in and won't pop back up. Sigh. This really is a piece of junk. It'll be fine as a decoration on its stand (I have the F3 lunchbox and bobblehead too), but man did they oversell this thing. It's not the least bit functional or of any redeeming physical quality, but good enough for me to use it as part of a Vault Dweller Halloween costume next year for a friend's annual party. Pretty much why I got it in the first place.

iPhone 6 with a very slim casing/gel around it does fit almost perfectly in it, without any of the foam inserts, so there is that.

A bummer I won't be able to get into the actual game until later tonight! (I did play through the opening sequence, but that's about it.)

It is a piece of a junk. I was never planning on actually using it. It's just a display for my collection.

I turned using Pipboy on, but it still won't work.

The game self is just amazing. Loving every minute of it.
Dog stays home btw. Only gets in the way lol

The dog is GREAT though! Kills/distracts enemies, AND can be used as a pack-mule so that you can still fast-travel.

Feral ghouls are terrifyingly more effective in this game

Yeah, he distracts me. But I'm sure he's already saved my ass a few times that I didn't even realize I was in danger.

Just barely started this, but I was curious if anyone else at the start of the game

Spoiler:

... tried to collect everything in the house. The pre-nuclear attack house. It was one of those "video games have taught me the wrong lessons" moment. I tried filling my pockets while they were trying to tell a story.

Also, thanks to whomever had the tip on turning off or turning down god rays. I think it was ZeroKFE, although I don't recall exactly. The game initially told me that everything should be played on low. I said "no" to the game and put it on Ultra and so far the only time it hitched was at the very start. So far, at least. Turning off god rays has fixed that.

It's quite a pretty game, really. For all the talk about how it's last gen. It's funny that they kept the Skyrim thing of showing item porn during loading screens and allowing you to zoom in and rotate the item. The textures are high res enough for me. As is the world.

I haven't gotten far, but I am getting a total kick out of the Boston area references. Concord is the town I grew up in!

Check your firewall. Windows tried to block it on first start.

So I just had the weirdest performance shift that I can remember in forever.

I started the game with a combo of Medium/Low settings for my gaming laptop (GTX 860M, i7-4720 @ 2.60GHz, 16GB Ram) and the first two environments ran like crap. Like 20-30 fps.

Then when I finally unlocked the open world segment, my hardware did a complete 180. I kept upping the graphic settings until I basically got to Ultra at what seems like 60fps (minus a couple telltale bugaboos like God Rays, etc.).

Now I'm running smooth as silk with no hitches, knock on wood.

So strange.

Just wait until you run into a glowing one.

Nope. The black rectangular solid to the left of the top-right-most dial. I was, like, "Hey what's this dWHYYYYYY?!" It pushed right through and jingled around for a bit until I played Operation with some tweezers. Not only had it pushed in but it did break ever-so-slightly. A sliver of purportedly supportive plastic looks to have just snapped. Should be an easy fix.

Sigh. This really is a piece of junk. It'll be fine as a decoration on its stand (I have the F3 lunchbox and bobblehead too), but man did they oversell this thing. I wasn't going to go redneck hunting with it on or anything but while I think it's not quite a piece of junk there are some underbaked elements. (I tend to be overly forgiving.)

iPhone 6 with a very slim casing/gel around it does fit almost perfectly in it, without any of the foam inserts, so there is that.

Haven't tried yet. Decided not to tempt fate.

Game finished installing right after I posted my last message, so I got to create my character and start playing! I did end up creating a female character. Got two levels and put my first perks in hacking and lockpicking. No idea if it's a good idea or not since I'm intending to play completely blind without looking up anything about perks or character builds. I haven't even watched any of the official Bethesda videos other than the trailers.

Spoiler:

I went very slowly through the vault just enjoying the atmosphere, and then of course the view upon exiting the vault. Founds Wadsworth and the cute dog! Since it seems we can get back inside the vault, I haven't really been picking up any items and figured I'd just pick something up if it seemed like I needed it right away and I can always go back and hunt for things later. Haven't yet messed with crafting though I found the various workbenches. This definitely appears to be a game I can live in for a while.

From what I've read the hacking is more or less the same as in Fallout 3. In 3, it would just tell you how many letters were correct. So if I guessed BEAR, but the password was FEAR, I would get 3 correct. If I guessed BARE I would get 0 correct because even though FEAR contains A, E, and R none of them were in the correct position.

If that's also the case in 4 then WISE and FIRE are the only possible options.

Thank you. That's great.

I do not know how I got through Fallout 3 whilst successfully hacking as if I were J.C. Denton, based entirety on a false understanding. Dumb luck at its finest!

I really dig how they have changed ghoul encounters generally.
Also, managing power cores for

Spoiler:

power armor

is a pretty neat addition.

Spoiler:

Having opportunities to change up your play style is great. I'm mainly sneak and snipe, but its awesome to have an upgraded rig and minigun to just suit up and fast travel to a location to completely level a location.

Wish I knew more about Boston, not sure how many references in the game are real world relevant etc.

I'm a little annoyed you can't throw grenades, etc. while using VATS. I always liked that in the previous game. Watching an enemy get blown up via slow-mo grenade cam was always fun.

Jumping in to get in, plus add a comment: The fact that I have to hack my .ini files in 3-5 places is both very nostalgic and very ridiculously stupid. It's 2015, people. I can't just change my fov and mouse sensitivity on the fly? What the living #*@.

Oh I ended up having to change VATS to the right bumper on the controller instead of the left. In Fallout 3 and FNV, it was the right bumper, so I kept using it automatically and ended up trying to bash things instead of VATSing them. Once I switched the bumpers, I was good to go!

Man, i love this game.

Rolled a Melee guy. After six hours, re-rolled as a sneaky sniper. I am just not good enough to bash my way through the game.

Ran as a female toon with two levels of sneak and 1 level of black widow, Was doing great until a pack of ghouls snuck up on me from behind. First death with this character.

I think I just lost a half hour cleaning up all the junk in my first settlement.

I haven't even started in on settlements. We play as a family so I'm waiting...but maybe I'll copy that save file and play but save it for them?!

Too much to do.

Emailed Bethesda about the Pip-Boy. The thing I pushed is the selector button. A button. That broke when I pushed it.

I wasn't crappy. It's a lovely game already and I like the Pip-Boy stuff. But I'd also like one that's not broken, that I can be a bit more careful with.

Aristophan wrote:

I juuuuust figured out how that worked after sorta skipping that mission. Didn't realize you could scrap stuff in that mode. Falloutcraft!

Updated my video driver and nary a crash since getting home from work. I may lose literal years of my life to this game.

IRL I work just a 15 min walk from the Old North Bridge and 'Sanctuary'. Feels very... I don't know. I am a newish dad also. I'm feeling maybe a bit too immersed, if that's possible.

I loved seeing the DC metro in F3, looking up NV's Mojave towns on google streetview, but this really brings it home.

Anyone having any issues with hacking terminals?

I'm on PS4. Attempting three different words that each return 0 likeness has left me with only words containing letters that I'm led to believe are not present in the correct password.

BEAR. SLIP. CAMP. These all return 0 likeness. Remaining are WISE, WARM, WAIT, FIRE, MANY, ELSE. Likeness should be returning a hit for the initial three if these are my remaining options, or do I fail to understand hacking in Fallout 4?

As I understand it, likeness means the words share the same letter in the same position.
By that metric, WISE and FIRE don't have any letters in common with the initial three words.

I haven't gotten this far yet, but I suspect "likeness" refers to the Damerau–Levenshtein distance between the words. Which is basically how may characters need to be changed to get from one word to the other. This algorithm is the basis for guesses at the word you intended in spelling checkers and google search.

It's not this complicated. Muttonchop is right, the number you see means that many letters are correct AND they're in the right position. It works exactly the same way it did in FO3 and NV.

Just wanted to throw in that part of the "hacking" involves all those extra characters in between the words as well. I usually wait until I've burned 3 tries, but you can start picking out any matching opening/closing brackets and it will remove non-matching words or if you're lucky reset your attempts back to 4. So if you see ( ) or [=:|@] or {)^%} or <.> on a single line, you can select those. It can help you narrow the list down if you're left with a few possible matches.

Base building tip I posted in previous thread in regards to resources you need:

Spoiler:

Anything you scrap within one base for parts is tied to that base only. So if you get (for example) 4 steel from a mail box, it'll be put into the workbench for that base only, and won't appear in your list of resources when you go to build something in another base. If you want to use it for another base, you need to get to your workbench and put the items into your inventory so you can then use them for building somewhere else. A little bit annoying, as it means a bit more messing about in menus and fast traveling to get things done.

Spoiler:

So is the workshop inventory different than the inventory you view when you transfer items into the magic shared inventory at any crafting station? My understanding was that there is just one big shared item bank shared between any crafting station in a settlement with a workshop.

Guess I need to find a second settlement/workshop location at find out.

You're both right. Read on for details

Spoiler:

You can link settlements via supply lines. Linked settlements share inventory along with some other benefits. Look in the help screen under WRKSH SOMTHINIG OR THE OTHER (sorry, can't remember)

Easy way to increase food supplies for a Settlement.

Spoiler:

If you have food ready to harvest, harvest it yourself and then replant it immediately. Then your one corn becomes two!

Thanks for this, even though the hacking is too easy so far anyway, but if the code words get up to over 6 characters these may come in handy.

Need to get some stores up and running, so far there has been very little bartering and caps have been pretty much useless, though I am taking my time exploring pretty much everything.

Demosthenes, ive been using that trick to great effect, crops EVERYWHERE.
