Elite Dangerous Catch-All

I saw you online tonight, Hrdina, but just as I had to sign off. Friend request accepted.
General question about mining: are metallic rings with Major Reserves not worth bothering with?

How to know that it is time to leave the game for a while:

* I am docked and have one more jump to make before I stop for now
* Check BB - there is a simple delivery mission for a station on the way
* Check the System Map to make sure the station is easy to reach? NOPE not me.
* Buy some other stuff to take to the intermediate station
* Jump to new system, station is 14K LS away
* Spend a few minutes to get to station, then go to Commodity Market instead of BB
* Accidentally sell the cargo for my mission
* Abandon mission because NFW am I coming back here again

Yeah, I've done nearly all of those before... I think in 1.4 they added the extra button to "show on map" for every mission. That's been a life saver. Before then I would almost always go onto eddb to check the station distance, but of course the one time I forget or am in a hurry the station is 100k ls away...

The "Open galaxy map" button is very useful but its transactions tab version isn't working for me for some reason.

OK, I apparently need a little guidance on how to undermine in PP.

Earlier today I was flying in a hostile system, minding my own business (as always). After a short altercation, I found myself directly behind the dispersing remnants of a Type 9 that had been pledged to a certain former senator. Among the wreckage were a number of canisters containing "garrison supplies".

After a few more similar altercations, I also had a number of merit vouches in my Transactions tab.

According the PP screens, I am supposed to undermine by bringing those garrison supplies back to a Control system for my faction. I did that, and was able to cash in my vouchers but was not able to do anything at all with those garrison supplies.

They are apparently considered illegal in my jurisdiction, so I want to get rid of them if they are useless.

What faction are you pledged to and what faction did the garrison supplies belong to? I've honestly never done the scoop goods undermining, so not sure I know the answer but that's odd that you can't do anything with them. You are getting PP merits for them though?

I'm with Winters and was undermining Arissa.

Yeah, I also got merit vouchers for the ship that accidentally explored immediately before I found the canisters. I get the impression that the supplies were useless, so I jettisoned them after I got away from the station.

I'm not sure either. The only thing I've really done in PP is the combat stuff.

My guess is that you don't actually need to bring the canisters in. Scoop merits are usually when you are undermining someone of the same major government (ie. one Empire PP faction undermining another empire PP). When you're undermining a faction that you are generally at war with (ie. Felicia vs. Aisling) the kill is often what it takes for the PP merit. The Type 9 happened to drop the cargo as well, but you didn't need to scoop it.

I was looking for a more detailed undermining guide to Winters but couldn't see one on my quick google search but that's my guess.

The Lazy Commanders Guide to PowerPlay

Felicia Winters specifics

Specifically:

Undermining (Imperial, Independent, and Alliance):
Undermining enemy factions gives You 30 Merits per kill, and again every CMDR that participates in the kill gets it, making this a great way to get a lot of merits for undermining, really fast.

Undermining (Federal):
If You blow the cargo hatch on Political Ships belonging to these factions, You will get 5 Merits per unit of PCA Cargo that You steal; meaning if You return to a control system with 50 units of Stolen PCAs, You get 250 merits for them! Do not destroy the political ships though, (Particularly if they belong to Z. Hudson, You will LOSE merits!) it will win You nothing, and You will get a bounty on your head. Fortunately for You, they are probably disabled from your Pulse Disruptors...

This cleared things up for me. Hope it helps.

Since we're on the topic of undermining, any of you empire PP faction players want to team up for a night to do some merit farming with undermining? Maybe we can go find Hrdina and blow him out of the sky.. Winters.. seriously?

I was thinking the same thing... Even if he didn't have the rebuy and begged, I'd still space him for being on the wrong side of the war.

Great, thanks for all the answers guys. It looks like Carlbear's information was confirmed by both athros & Jeremy.

* To undermine against a non-allied power, you have to become a homicidal psychopath
* To undermine an ally (Hudson in my case) you have to steal their cargo

I have a bit of a bounty in a couple of ALD systems now.

I am quaking in my space boots.

I am with Winters because I am not depraved enough to work for the empire, and my opinion of Hudson is unprintable.

I was kidding, but yeah. I like Winters more in the game (I agree with you on Hudson) but Winters is ruined by her insufferable Reddit community.

Got 8 mil for the "Among the Stars: The pirates strike back" CG(over 40% level), which entailed basically 3 hours of me pew pewing bad guys over a few days and earning about 4.5 mil doing it. So 12.5 mil for about 3 hours of fun play.

Yeah I love me some CGs!

I thought they seemed organized at least, but to be honest most Reddit communities in E: D are insufferable. The Impies seem worse to me, but maybe that is just good role playing.

I don't spend much time on Reddit anyway.

Very nice.

I thought about jumping over there for an hour or two last night, but didn't make it. Oh well.

Yeah I made like 50 million doing those bounty CG's there back to back. I just missed being in the top 5%. People that play while I'm at work kept passing me. CG's are where I'm going to be focusing my time right now. After a couple weeks of PP I was getting completely burned out. I find CG's much more enjoyable.

Here's what I've noticed: the Hudson and ALD subs are filled with nice people who are generally well organized, but because of their size in game there is a fair bit of difficulty dealing with merit grinders and the like, but both factions are able to deal with it.

The Aisling sub is... well, Aisling. The blue-haired space princess attracts a very specific animu crowd, and her stance on slavery drove said followers to nearly cause a civil war over the recent coronation. This is where a lot of drama on reddit seems to some from.

The Patreus and Torval subs are mostly dead. They get a post every week outlining organizational goals, but very little else, aside from the occasional cross post from another sub.

The Winters sub is... interesting. It's similar to the Aisling sub in that there's a fair bit of drama, but the sub itself is treated as a sort of oligarchy. There's a self-proclaimed "Sky marshall" and his friends who run the show, and any dissenting opinions are downvoted/silenced. Like I said, I like Winters as a character, but her followers are problematic.

I haven't spent much time on the other subs, except the Delaine sub has a bunch of folks gloating about how Frontier never quite figured out how Powers were supposed to collapse, which led to the "failure" of the Pegasi Pirate War.

Yeah, Torval is pretty mellow. Call it minor roleplaying or call it lack of players, but generally speaking we don't really worry about the affairs of Aisling and ALD. Torval generally also isn't a part of the Imperial High Command player group, and was not a participant in the Pegasi pirate war.

Every week its a struggle to hit our fortification goals, even when we're not under siege by Winters or Hudson, and our pretty good trade bonuses mean we get a lot of grinders who care more about securing a strong trade route even if that means it screws our power (the so called 5th columners).

I've been with Torval really since day one. The history was that there was a pretty big player group that pushed Torval to a top 3 power early. Then that group decided to go independent and the power dropped to bottom 3. Another player group has sort of taken the reigns of leadership, but like Jeremy mentioned, its generally just a fortification goal and we go from there. I actually do a bit of fortification as I do like to see the old crone succeed. I probably put in a good 800-1500 fortification widgets a cycle, most of that spending my credits for speedups. I veered off this week to go do some undermining at a SCRAP request, but it looks like Torval has some preparation issues again so I may get back to Empire space to help the cause there.

Has anyone else had the problem of the "open galaxy map" button (the one in the interface, not on one's keyboard/joystick/controller) not actually performing its function when looking at a mission's details in the transactions tab of the lower left panel? For me it just ends up taking you back to the list of missions/bounties/whatever.

Can't say I've noticed this. There are times when the target station is so close to you current station that when it goes to the galaxy map your current station is still selected, but it still at least gets me to the galaxy map.

Does it not work right for you 100% of the time? At the risk of being condescending, are you sure you are not hitting back instead of select when you highlight that option?

1.5 beta is next week (conflicting with Fallout ).
2.0 beta is the 24th (conflicting with me being out of town Thanksgiving weekend).

eeeexcellent.

@Carlbear, no, I'm definitely selecting and hitting the button just as I would on the equivalent button of the bulletin board mission details screen (when you're deciding whether to accept or reject it). What I did find is that in the transactions tab case, if you then open your galaxy map some other way (by hitting the dedicated keyboard button or whatever) it highlights/centers the destination system for the mission. So it's effectively an extra step (the way it's working now). And yes, it seems to happen 100% of the time for me.

Speaking of highlighting/centering, what's the key for centering on the one's current system?

@Brian
Eeexcellent indeed (although I'm not in on the beta, alas, but I'm glad they're close).

The full video of the stream should be posted in a few hours, but here's a quick summary from someone on Reddit:

Beta will come in two stages: 1.5 launches on Nov 9th, and Horizons 2.0 on Nov 24th

Want to do NPC Wingmates & Crew. Planned, but no timescale.

Schematic map coming soon

Rings will cast shadows on planet's surface, but no timescale.

Orrery map still planned, but no timescale. Will be at back end of Season 2 if it makes it in.

Player groups functionality in game. 'Yes, but...' recognising player groups as sub-factions is the start, but it won't be exactly like other game's mechanics.

Loot/Crafting: Simple bits will be in 2.0

Tier 2 persistent NPCs: Won't be in the sense that you can kill off all NPCs in galaxy, but small additions will come sequentially. No timeframe.

Played it on Vive today. 'It's awesome'. Buggies didn't make him feel sick. Getting excessively tumbled did make another player who was more prone to motion sickness feel that way.

Shark-tooth skin for the Python? Would love it, and they're looking into it, but no promises.

Asp scout? Not military version, another variant. More like the Asp out of Frontier. Slightly more budget.

When will we see significant updates to the base game? DB counters that piracy forms & bounty hunting, and new professions (mining) are significant improvements. 'It's getting better by degrees'. Says bounty hunting in particular will change more and more through Season 2.

Turret with Hotas? You can configure as you like. Hat button etc.

Plans to expand astronomical phenomenon? Accretion discs etc? Would love to do it. On the list. Comets are in the simulation, but getting them to look good and interact well with gameplay still need to be got right. You will be able to see medium-sized 'potato' asteroids even if you don't have Horizons.

Is Elite and MMORPG? By almost all measures, but suggests quality / connection limits means it can still improve over time.

Did he ever imagine in '84 Elite could look like this? Imagine yes :). Talks about under-promise, over-deliver in terms of creating impressive modern content.

Vid of buggy driving into settlement with Corvette nearby

How settlements work with single-player? Use deep ravines to approach 'under the guns' etc. The big guns don't decline etc. Only have to deal with the lighter skimmers. Could take out a generator, and both the lights and the big guns go down. Then call your ship in (if you've got all the generators). There are lots of bases, and they're varied.

NICE! SRV being lowered out of a Cobra, internal view as you exit. Animation looks good. Drives to large base. Hexagonal heat radiators.

Plans to reduce current transition phases? Yes, and they're constantly being worked on. (Some regions, and some connections, have excessive transitions now, and they're working on them)

Character creator will be used for NPCS? Yes, and planned. But not straight away.

Keelback? Lakon ship. You'll see in a week. Based on Type 6, but better, with more weaponry.

How are the DDF 'near God-like powers' re background sim coming? Straight apology on slow progress. At some point there will be something to address that, but not for now.

Buggy too jerky in streams? Some were filmed with TrackIR, which can be less pleasurable for viewer than player, maybe the cause of concern.

High end FerDeLance? Not sure where this rumour came from. Not ready to talk about that yet.

Thargoids? Well.... He was impressed by Cmdr who decoded the signals. There's more exciting stuff to come.

Will capital ships be improved to be more fun to play with/against? Yes, there's more to come.

Asteroid stations? You can sort of see the first vestiges them in CQC. They will come. Don't have a timeframe. Hopefully back-end of Season 2.

More CGs to expand the human bubble? Yes, he thinks they're wonderful. Absolutely yes.

Are you going to play SC? Yes, looking forward to playing it.

Can you conquer planetary bases? Can attack, but can't have your own one. Not yet anyway.

NPCs in Horizons? NPCs driving skimmers already. NPCs driving buggies [?] unlikely in Season 2. Planetary ships, yes.

Game API? Looking at, in pipeline.

Transfer creds after certain rank? Suggest the cargo transfer, so not seen as a priority. Has air of exploit if done on large scale. (Says big cheaters are being banned).

Expand 32 player cap? Could, but experience would suffer. Continually reviewing.

Jettison all cargo? Why?? You don't have to do it ;). Makes your ship lighter. And it's a surprise.

Passengers? Planned, but can't remember exact timescale.

Cutter / Corvette? Both slightly bigger/longer than Anaconda, and have bigger hardpoints. And fit through the slot.

What will you see 20k from Sol? You will see more exotic things, there will be things to find, but doesn't want to spoil

[Missed question] - Looking at how Horizons and non-Horizons Wings perform missions together.

Planetary approach suite fits in every ship. SRV takes up 4t of cargo space. Doesn't take up compartment.

Multi-sourced lighting? On the list. Might only come in High and Ultra settings. No promises.

Will we see Cmdr faces through visors etc / when communicating? Yes face normally clear because ship pressurised.

More difference between stations? It's coming, not sure when. Probably not in 2.0

Vessels over Season 2? First variants will be similar to the SRV, then more down the line. Handle differently and do different things.

Ship naming? (Did we promised that? :)). He wants it. Says we will do it. I'll talk to the team tomorrow.

Systems visited bookmarks? Doesn't know.

Models or kits coming? Models yes, not kits that he knows of.

Publishing the lore? Wants to. And bringing story more to fore.

Large cities? Ever bigger settlements coming. Big cities not in 2.0, but will come over the Season.

SRV inside stations? Currently no, and probably not. Will look if worth doing.

Is orbital cruise and instanced area? At the moment pretty seamless. Isn't sure on details on where the transition is. There is instancing on the surface.

They have rough ship layouts, but no walking etc in Season 2

Are there none Thargoid species? YES

[Mumbled] If you're in a wing should be able to share exploration data. Will look into it.

More CQC maps in 1.5, then more after.

Supercruise bug? He will ask after this stream.

I cannot wait for the 1.5 beta on Tuesday. A much as I'm looking forward to Horizons, seeing a giant batch of new ships has me unreasonably excited. I just wish we could know a bit more about the price and rank requirements for the Cutter and Corvette now, so I can decide if I need to go on one last credit making binge before Fallout takes over my time... also on Tuesday.

The way I heard it he pretty much confirmed Thargoids for Season 2 sometime.

Papageno wrote:

Well, he said there would be more content related to them, so it could just be more signals, artifacts, and other strange things to puzzle over.

My guess? Interaction with the Thargoids will be a marquee feature for season 3 -- but this season we'll just see a lot more concrete stuff leading up to that.

I'll want to know what's going on with it It's not going to show up for Xbox for a long while.

Thanks for posting the notes!
