Alright garion333, you convinced me. I'll pay $6 for the first episode and then cancel the sub.

Or you could just DVR it on regular CBS. ;)

Except you can't?

Edit: Ah, you literally meant the pilot episode that everyone gets to see before they put it behind a pay wall.

And that'll be hysterically hyped up left and right during the lead up to the broadcast by CBS' NFL people. Oh, how I can't wait to hear Phil Simms' insight on Star Trek.

Well, the series is now dead to me before I even see it.

"Dr. Spock was my favorite character on that show, Jim!"

I think the real question is if people do not get the CBS streaming subscription (I do not plan on it now) will they move it to TV or cancel the show? To launch a streaming service you need more than just a single flagship (which a network could get away with) you need several flagships to be viable.

Yeah, I'm wondering that too. Plus network TV has a tough enough time getting people to continue watching a television show post-premier when it moves timeslots so how big is the adoption rate going to be when it's on a wholly different delivery method that requires a separate monthly payment and login setup?

I think it's going to fail spectacularly and they're going put the show on other sites, like Netflix, as they do with their other properties. They can still wield CBS All Access as a "see it here first" deal with a timed exclusivity, but that probably won't work either.

I honestly think CBS is stupid to do it this way, but I guess we can't fault them for trying something new........right?

Oh hell, I hope this fails and pulls them under to the point they lose the Olympic rights so we can get a decent streaming service to watch the Olympics on in North America.

Was excited to hear the "new Star Trek series" buzz on the internet this morning.

Now reading about some CBS All-Access that I've never heard of is disappointing.

It just reeks of the typical "milk the Trekkies for all they've got" philosophy that Paramount has done for decades.

TOS DVDs? Release them in single discs with 4 episodes at a time, buying a whole season will cost you about 5x more than any other TV show season.

TNG and DS9 DVDs? Finally release them in season form. But again charge $90 MSRP when every other 22-episode season of every other show in existence is no more than $60, usually more around $40.

Finally get around to doing the work and making blu rays of TOS and TNG? Do the same thing as with the DVDs. The list price on each TOS season is actually $129.99! Same with TNG, but there's 7 seasons.

Eventually, at some point, fans have to say "enough is enough."

Oh yeah, as a reminder, if y'all haven't been reading Fashion it So, y'all need to:

They basically go through TNG episodes and critique hair, clothes, plots, facial expressions and so on, and it's amaaaaaaaazing.

Do you not get CBC's online Olympics coverage in the US?

Bookmarked. TNG fashion has always been fascinating, but I've never really put much thought into it (until now). Just rewatched Deja Q the other night, and the jumpsuit they put Q in left little to the imagination.

Ohhh, they had a blast critiquing that jumpsuit:

Also, side note, I love Q's little speech to Data in that episode:

There are creatures in the universe who would consider you the ultimate achievement, android. No feelings, no emotions, no pain... And yet you covet those qualities of humanity. Believe me, you're missing nothing. But if it means anything to you - you're a better human than I.

Something about the delivery of it always gets me.

It's amazing to me that executives get paid hundreds of thousands of dollars per year to be stupid enough to think that this will work.

The only thing that makes sense to me is if they are merely claiming that it'll be streaming to get free advertising for their service - many of us are indeed hearing about it for the first time! Then as we get closer to release, they announce that a traditional broadcast model will "best serve the Star Trek community".

I kind of feel like this tweet nailed it:

A new Star Trek TV show should basically just be @RikerGoogling @WorfEmail @TNG_S8 etc sitting around checking their "tricorders" chuckling.

I thought NBC had the Olympics. Did it switch hands?

Yeah I think garion just has some misplaced rage.

Misplaced rage! I'm so mad I didn't even know what station it was!

I'm starting to think this may be the first of many series that they try this with. If they can get six or seven shows on it they have a chance. I give CBS credit for being forward thinking (adding streaming services) even though they are not sure what it looks like.

They could also be holding out to get a better deal from Hulu for their current programming.

Or they could just change their minds completely, a la how Star Trek Phase II was supposed to launch a Paramount Pictures' TV network until the whole thing was scrapped and we ended up with Star Trek: The Motion Picture, where some people are still waiting for Kirk to be done with staring at the Enteprise.

How dare you THAT SHIP IS f*ckING BEAUTIFUL let him stare at it all day if he wants to.

If I recall correctly, CBS' plan is to put it on their streaming service for a while, and then put it on the air. This really isn't a terrible idea, Star Trek fans are more likely to be technophiles with some solid incomes, so they are a perfect test audience for streaming. It also follows the pattern of assuming (correctly) that fans will pay for their Trek fix, even when making a piss-poor Next Generation movie like Nemesis or a soul-less cash-in like Into Darkness. Hopefully, they are able to get this series some good writers and a solid ensemble cast, and can build on the goodwill from the reboot movies (even though I don't love them, they are popular). What I am really afraid of is this show being used as a Big Bang Theory alumni club: the occasional Admiral Sheldon appearance where he dresses down Captain Funnyjewishname to a live studio laugh track. Make it real science fiction, like The Martian but set in the Federation world of 300 years from now and I'll be happy. My guess is that they will try to fit it into the reboot universe, but closer in timeline to Next Generation. It would leave them room to name-drop some of the Next Gen characters (hopefully not in the obnoxious 'every Wookiee is Chewbacca' way) but free to change things, thanks to the universe being different now.

Not correct at this time. The 1st show will be on TV and then all the following shows will be on CBS's All Access site/app. The language CBS is using is that all "first-run episodes will then be available exclusively in the United States on CBS All Access", but they're quite mum about when they'll be shown elsewhere. They did say that the show will be available outside of the US, so that may be what it's referring to.

I cannot find word anywhere where they are talking about airing the show on network TV, but after all the negative responses to their news they may be hedging their bets.

The other "bad" news is that Alex Kurtzman is the one running the show and he co-wrote and co-produced the reboot movies, so I'll be surprised if the show heads in the direction of The Martian, but you never know.

Also this...

The new television series is not related to the upcoming feature film Star Trek Beyond,

Doesn't mean it won't be in the same universe, but...

I'm just raining all over your parade.

garion333 wrote:

Some rain I can handle. Star Trek: Big Bang I can't.

The (first) reboot movie wasn't bad, it just felt a hell of a lot more like Star Wars than Star Trek. It's the main reason I'm excited about The Force Awakens: if JJ Abrams made that good of a Star Wars movie with Star Trek, imagine how well he can do a Star Wars movie!

FWIW, Serengeti's experience with CBS All Access is how I feel about Hulu+. You pay them $10 a month and still have to sit through the same three commercials over and over again.

Um, no. It's $7.99 with commercials and $11.99 mostly without commercials.

I kind of get the annoyance, but is really that bad?

If the show is weekly that is 4 episodes a month, shows have always been an hour so 4 hours for 5.99 - so roughly $1.50 an hour. That feels quite cheap.

And I highly recommend the no commercial option.

I didn't say it was everybody's experience. Hulu+ to me isn't worth the cost.

Sorry I got the dollar amount wrong ...

I've read a lot of admittedly speculative talk that they can't set it in the same universe because the movie universe is controlled by Paramount Pictures, not CBS, so perhaps it'll be like how Arrow and Supergirl are in different universes than Batman v. Superman.

Worst case? I see the pilot and it gets me to finally watch all of DS9.

I think I'm a winner here.

You should watch all of DS9 regardless. Well, almost all, much of season 1 can be skipped.

Veloxi wrote:

You just move along home! Season 1 was all stellar....

I said MUCH of it can be skipped, but some episodes, like Duet, need to be seen.

If the Netflix episode synopsis includes the words "Quark's mother," go ahead and skip that one too.
