Electronic and Ambient Music Catch-All

I don't know what kind of music I like. I say I like electronic, but most of what I listen to sounds more like M83, Cut Copy, Daft Punk, etc. Nothing like what's been posted here.

This STS9 station is grooving me through the day. Loving these recommends!

That would probably best be described as electropop, synthpop. If you search for those terms, you'll likely find a lot more of artists along these lines.

There was a series of compilation discs called Synthpop for a Darkened Room that I listened to for a little bit some time ago, might find some interesting artists mixed in there.

You, sir, may like what I posted about Lake Trout.

STS9 is also best live.

Indeed - the recommendation about Lake Trout was spot on.

If I might make one other suggestion, tying this back to gaming - you don't have to know the game to enjoy my favorite eletronic / ambient soundtrack of all time - Eve Online.

This. "Electronic(a)" is an umbrella for a lot of individual genres. The only connection that wobbly dubstep and ambient have is that neither of them sound like they're made with "proper instruments."

Spoiler:

Though it's pretty difficult to argue that a computer isn't as much an instrument as a guitar.

I tried all of the recommendations referenced in this thread.

They are boring.

I am going back to Goa Trance.

Yeah, I've spent many an hour grinding it out while Astral Projection is being blasted. They're probably my favorite in the psytrance/goa genre. We can then begin talking about Infected Mushroom, Hallucinogen, Shpongle, etc.

I'm not seeing any recommendations in that post.

I didn't like the new Converting Vegetarians album as much as the first. Still bought it.

Couple of final shoutouts - I've just been getting into Tim Hecker - heavily on the "ambient soundscape" end of the spectrum.

Harmony in Ultraviolet is f-ing awesome. I need to listen to his newer releases.

Following up on this thought, I listened to his latest release, Virgins, last night, and it was AWESOME.

I really, really like ambient music that has some weight to it, not just pretty pastoral soundscapes.

Böhren & der Club of Gore are one of my go-tos when I'm after a very particular type of atmosphere. It's definitely not electronic and there's enough structure there to challenge the ambient tag, but nothing else comes close to evoking the same sounscape in my opinion. It lives in it's own 'Creeping Doom Black Mass Jazz' genre in my collection and only comes out on special occasions

New album from Kangding Ray, Cory Arcane

I'm not a big fan of most ambient or trance but I love electric dance, house and drum n bass. DJ Baby Anne is an example

Please tell me drub'n'bass is not a typo, and is actually a subgenre made exclusively using samples of drubbings.

Which reminds me, I've got an album made only from samples of the artists having sex with each other.

I'm not saying it's particularly good, I'm just saying that it exists.

Drub n bass sounds exclusively British to me

On the DnB front, Royalston just released a new album. And London Elektricity's new album will be out in a few days. Gotta love Hospital Records.

I like Hospital records. If I'm just jamming on youtube i listen to Spinnin Records

Couple of new bits of juicey goodness.

Jamie XX (of The XX) has an album out. It's rather good.

And on a faster, harder, nastier tip, there's always this.

DJ VoodooMix / Radiobomb --- drillin' techstep drumcore 04-2012 by Radiobomb on Mixcloud

Luke Vibert, who is the reigning World Champion Cheeky Bastard Of Electronica, has successfully defended his title with this track, "I Can Phil It", which extensively samples from Phil Collins' In The Air Tonight

The lack of Zero 7 here needs to be rectified.

I think Lorn deserves some mention, too:

Also Eskmo:

And Eskmo's Cloudlight reminds me of an old Underworld video:

And just because more people need this video in their lives, Hot Chip's I Feel Better:

Enjoying the Floating Points album. Sort of at the crossroads of ambient, future jazz and post-rock.

Haven't listened to much Boards lately, I had a phase years ago where I think I overdid it and played those albums to death. I have been into Tycho recently, they have a similar, but more soothing IMO sound.

Like Tyco, check these too.

Emancipator (one of my absolute favorites in a while)

Mogwai

Bonobo

Gramatik
Pretty Lights
Little People

Normally I would argue Mogwai a better fit for our shiny new post-rock/experimental thread, but Rave Tapes is Mogwai goes Tron.

Interesting how sharply divided critic opinions were on the album, but I have to say that the material made for a pretty good live show - last concert I went to before I left Austin.

Of course they remixed Hotline Miami's soundtrack! I love this stuff.

Keeno has a new album out as of about a week ago. Really solid work, and the mix set is one of the best I've ever heard on an album.

I'm more of a late 70's early 80's MOOG synth kinda guy.. but some of these recommendations were really good.. I lived in the UK in '78-'79 and heard Gary Numan's Down in the Park and was immediately hooked on that deep bass synth sound.. The sounds those early synth's could make still make me smile.

Would have loved to been at that concert in '79...

Arise thread!

Couple of shout-outs to some recent bitstreams that have been gracing my lug-holes.

Tim Hecker has a new album out. It's good, if surprisingly melodic for him...

While talking about Tim Hecker with a friend, he turned me onto Ben Frost, which sits in a similar niche.
