Elite Dangerous Catch-All

I am now a Federation recruit in a Type 6 hull. I love it when stuff like this happens: My promotion mission and first flight with my new hull was to go find a Stolen Ancient Artifact. I eventually found three, and the hoarder in me couldn't resist. While heading back to the mission system I start getting interdicted. Turns out the C class equipment on my 6 isn't quite as nimble as the A class gear on my Cobra... so I submit. Before the cooldown completed my shields were basically toast and while I was still trying to rotate to the escape vector my hull was down to 1%. So now I'm coasting towards a base with a compromised canopy and some hot cargo in my hold. Good times!
The rest of the trip finished without incident and I was able to turn in the mission and repair. Here's the part I love: While I am deciding what to do with my two leftover artifacts I spot another cargo recovery mission and as luck would have it it wanted 2 artifacts! Accept mission. Give Cargo. 70K for being in the right place at the right time.

AWS re:Invent pushed all of the talks up to YouTube.

Has anyone had issues finding a station that let's you buy bulkheads modules? I have the mirrored on my Vulture and don't particularly like them but ever since I put them on I can't find a station that even offers any so I can downgrade. I'm starting to think it's a bug.

Orphu, I started using Trade Dangerous (via the UI you linked). Definitely a lot of flexibility that I need to figure out. One question, when you update the prices file from Maddavo's, does it overwrite everything? I'm asking because I can add in black market prices manually, but if I update will it just wipe that out with the new download?

Of course as soon as I say this I find one

It merges in any prices that are newer than what is already in your prices file. If you look at the file, it tracks a timestamp on each commodity individually.

Makes sharing prices with others pretty easy. You can also then filter out price info you feel is too old to be trusted. You can also get a list of stations by distance and the age of the prices so you know what to go refresh.

Thargoid Artifacts.

I think Compromised Nav Beacons are my new favorite thing in the game. If you have a KWS you can really go to town racking up bounties. The trick is to go in with an empty hold. You will be constantly scanned, but ignored. You can basically engage things one-on-one if you desire, or if you want to take a wing on, go for it. There are non-system authority NPC's in there who can and do help, so you can still killsteal like in a CZ.

I like them better than RES (even Hazardous) because a) they are just inside a system next to the star so you don't have to worry about dark/light side b) no asteroids to run into c) plenty of ships all over the place so no need to hunt. Its basically a CZ with better pay and you can pick your enemies. I found one system that had a compromised beacon and a station with both fed and elite factions so collecting bounties was cake. Unfortunately the station was a good 10k LS from the star, so a bit of a slog. Hopefully I can find another few systems like that.

Right now I'm in Rati Irtii which has a compromised beacon right inside and stations about 1100 ls away. It also is starting point of a pretty good trade route that can get you around 4K/ton roundtrip in profit.

We assume. No definitive answers yet.

They've been floating around in the game since 1.2 or so. They're very rare, have some discovered properties but still have a lot of open questions, and gradually damage any ship that carries them.

Yep. First round, they were spitting out Morse Code for the system they were in. Second Round (what was just figured out) is the UA scans the ship that scans it and creates a wire diagram of it using a letter grid. There is a next step, but it's unknown what it is.

They also appear to orient themselves toward a particular star, but no one knows why yet.

And.

Onboard.

I thought they had slaves in them.

I'm SORRY. OKAY!?

Sheesh.

And another thing: Who knew something with the name "face-huggers" was bad? Huh?! They're gonna hug you. Oh noes!

NAME THINGS PROPERLY!

They should be called "Kill it. Kill it. Kill it." No mistake about that one.

I sell ten tons of the stuff to the crew at KG348 and suddenly I'm the bad guy?!

You and your alien face-hugger slaves will bring the Thargoids down upon us. I hope you are happy.

Please tell me there's actually a KG348 in E:D with a station named Sevastapol around it...

Next you'll be telling us that the Leathery Eggs aren't just models.

So, apparently long range Missions and Smuggling out of Sothis is pretty lucrative right now. I'm going to get my Asp over there and give some of it a shot, and see if it's worth it.

Of course they're models. We wouldn't be breeding our own Thargoids now. Right?

Off for vacation for 2 weeks, take care all. Hopefully Orcus will be set up when I get back.

Hi fellow Goodjers,

So, I purchased ED during the beta for like $70 or something. Had a blast flying around and shooting things in the tutorial (don't laugh..you did to). Anyway, when I got into the campaign it was still very new and not fleshed out, and I honestly didn't know what to do. Long story short it has gathered dust (not even installed on the new PC) for the better part of a year. In anticipation of Oculus Rift coming out in Q1 (the original reason for me to buy ED), what would you suggest a good game plan is for me to jump back into the game? Not really a walk through, but maybe just some bullet points on go here, do this, work on this etc.

Also, I bought the Voice Attack software with it as well, do any of you use this?

Thanks as always,
Wheat

Well short answer is there is no Campaign, has never been one, and I'm not sure there ever will be one.

If you enjoyed flying around and shooting, then best bet is to continue to do so. There are now groups (wings) available so you can group up with others, but space is still pretty lonely.

You can always start by taking up some simple courrier missions, do some trading. Not sure how good a base sidewinder is going to be for bounty hunting, but that's always a possibility as well. As most people here would say, you make your own story in elite. There is no agreed upon progression, though trading rares seems to be most people's early suggestion if you want to make some coin.

I would say just keep trading to make your money, but I enjoy that part of the game. Someone else would tell you to go do some simple bounty hunting.. others would say take every courrier mission you can.

I did enjoy flying around, and I understand the "make your own story" thing. I enjoy trading and courier-ing as much as the next guy. So I can get down with that for sure. I guess, to tailor my question a bit more...I need a jumping off point. To say "start off with trading" is one thing, but if you could maybe say the literal first thing to do in each path (i.e. courier, trading, bounty) would that be possible? I guess I just don't know where to start, I can take my story from there I think. That was what got me last time and I ended up stopping, but at that time there was so little known about it that there was nothing online.

Something as simple as: For trading start by going to the 7/11 and buying a big gulp, those trade well at the corner of Jones and 5th...for Bounty.....

I would say look at the bulletin board for whatever station you're in, find a courier or smuggling mission to bring goods from there to somewhere else and go for it.

To save you some frustration I'd look up the destination station on eddb.io to make sure its not sending you somewhere you have to travel 100,000ls from the entry point.

Its just so hard to say what a profitable trade route is. If you're just starting, you don't have the capital to trade the more profitable goods (basically stuff that goes trades for over 3k/ton), and I don't think there's much money to be made trading the other goods. You can probably do better just doing courier missions and it will probably be more interesting.

I know I made my first big money moving rares, even in the starter sidewinder, but that meant me stripping off my shields and my guns and adding a fuel scoop to make the jumps more bearable and enough hold space to make it worth my while.

I'll leave it up to some of the other newer players to describe fighting. I don't think I fired a shot from my starter sidewinder but things may have changed on that front.

Check the OP. I've consolidated a lot of the collective knowledge of this thread there to make life easier to start

Lots of links to useful info in the original post. Some of it might be a bit outdated, but most of it still applies to a certain degree. The biggest thing that's probably not reflected is that bulletin board missions are probably a lot more useful now than they used to be.

EDIT: What Wayfarer said. Also, there's a ton of good starter guides to be found on YouTube, Reddit, etc. Take a look through that (or just jump in your ship and start flying until you blow up or get hopelessly lost), and then when you've got a slightly better sense of how things work, we'll happily answer any additional questions you might have from there.

wheatabits, no one can tell you exactly where to go or what to do. You first have to decide what you want to do. Now, early in the game, running missions is the simplest way to go, but longer down the road what sounds appealing? Exploring? Trading? Combat? There are paths to all of these, and once you have a better idea of your own path, guidance will be easier to give.

As for voice attack, oh yah, I use it all the time, especially with the Brian Blessed voice pack. It's really fantastic and not only helps with creating macros of multiple commands, but it definitely adds to immersion. Definitely worth the time it takes to set up.

The live stream about planet generation in Horizons was pretty damn cool:

I finally made my way over to Orcus on the weekend. Good choice of HQ, I like.
