Harebrained Schemes' BattleTech Catch-All

Those $10000 tier rewards are funny. Michael Stackpole will write Mary Sue fan fiction about you!

Would you take on 4 Atlases with 20 Urbanmechs?

YES! And if I still lost it would be epic!

I've gotten to the point where the words "turn-based tactical" have become the kiss of death for me. I now realize that any game that involves moving little individuals around on a grid while alternating turns is not a game that I'm going to finish. And, it's not just that I'm not going to finish it - I'm going to give up in frustration at the tedious and slow pace of the battle encounters while feeling intensely annoyed because I enjoyed SOOO much of the rest of the game.

I've got positive memories of the Battletech franchise going back to my childhood. So, this is all vaguely disappointing for me.

Man's gotta eat! It's not like he's making royalties off of Rogue Squadron anymore.

Turn based tactical was what the original BattleTech was, except in board game format.

The idea of a turn-based game is what BattleTech fans have been waiting on for the computer since the 80's. Crescent Hawks Inception was just a big tease and even then it was all light mechs (Or you could "cheat" and get a 50 tonner)

Turn based done right can be really good, though I understand if it is not your cup of tea. People who like the setting but don't want turn-based have had their game, multiple times now.

And the Phoenix Hawk LAM right before the end was an even worse tease!

Maybe I'd feel slightly differently if I'd gotten one of the miniatures, but it took a long time before I stopped messing around in the game and actually finished it.

Yup, I've been waiting and waiting and waiting for a proper Battletech computer game based on the tabletop game for decades; I'm keeping my hopes in check, but I would be ecstatic if this game finally accomplishes what I've been waiting for.

I'm really excited by this. Unfortunately they are looking at a delivery date of 2017 (I believe) so it'll be a while.

Wake me up when someone redoes MechCommander.. much rather have a RTS than TB.

I backed it. Hoping for the stage 3. An open ended battletech game would be pretty great. I could see them hitting that in the next 30 days.

I also contributed. Looking forward to another great turn-based Battletech game!

That isn't cheating. It is pulling a brave Sir Robin. Or ideally a tactical retreat that you could then pick them off 1 by 1. I think I remember doing it a few times but nostalgia memory is fuzzy. Also you could never mod it so that really sucked. (unless you actually did cheat with a hex editor, like giving your mechs ac's with unlimited ammo)

edit: also I'm with GG, gimme mechcommander please!

You could get the Chameleon by taking it in the last mission in the Academy. The trick was to station yourself by the wall about to be breached and then running like hell.

It was 50 tons, which was higher then anything else in the game and had a large laser which could rip through most armor. The downside was it had 10 heat sinks so it was prone to overheating. However, once you ripped through its weapons in the first turn even if you overheated you probably just killed at least 1 mech.

You could also steal a Mech in the Arena as well, but you wouldn't be able to go back to that town for a loooong time.

Here's why I get a little upset about "remake Mech Commander!"

People who wanted to see the board game get a decent PC treatment never did. Crescent Hawks Inception was it. Crescent Hawks Revenge was RTS and it didn't translate well at all. We finally got a game with a decent mech selection and could control a company and they made it RTS! Then you had 2 different Mech Commanders. I feel like I may be missing some games there, not counting MechWarrior.

So RTS fans have already gotten at least 3 games, 2 of them good, in the BattleTech universe.

Turn-based fans have gotten 1 game with light mechs only and the ability to control a maximum of 3. We've gotten gipped.

If you have a hankerin' for Mech Commander you can go download it. If I want to play a turn-based version I can go download...?

We need this game and we need it to be turn-based. To say I've been waiting since the 80's is not an exaggeration.

I remember getting that better mech in the beginning. It was one of the better mechs in the game.

The hardest missons were the ones where you had a couple of tanks or combat vehicles (non-mechs). That game was hard.

@Botswana - I would counter with how many turned based strategy games have we had since the 80's? Sure only one based on Mechwarrior but there have been hundreds of TBS rpg's. Whereas we have probably less than 10 RTT or small squad RTS games. We can pretty much point to Mechcommander and Dawn of War 2 franchises along with Cresent Hawks 2. I don't know if you want to include Baldur's gate in this but that is still barely scratching 10 games.

Ideally, I don't see a problem with having both. And the concept shots look fantastic. It looks like the gameplay will standout and not be Shadowrun or Xcom with mechs.

I already put in for it, I cannot wait to see what they do with the license.

For some reason whenever I see mechs like the Atlas now, I keep picturing this:

I worry about this because Mechwarrior Tactics didn't make it.
That was fairly recently.
It suffered from a few problems which may have been releasing simultaneously with Mechwarrior Online, and the card based thing, which I didn't really get.

From reading the developer comments it seems like the game will be limited to 4v4, which really downsizes the possible scope of the game.

Never heard of Megamek and Solaris Skunkworks?

I'll be backing this. Proven track record and Battletech, yes sir sign me up.

Ill be backing it. Since there's no limit on the $25 entry unlike Divinity, I'll wait a little bit. Curious if $50 is worth it.

I'm really pumped for this. I enjoyed the heck out of Shadowrun, quirks and all, so I'll probably back this at some point. Mech games hit me with tons of nostalgia so I can't wait to see how this turns out.

I've backed this and am excited. My first thought on seeing the Kickstarter was of how much I loved Mech Warrior 2 back in the day. But then I remembered that around 1995 or 1996 I had a couple of months where I got way into all the battletech stuff, and I was playing this MUD (or MOO or MUSH or whatever) where I had to take the equivalent of a DMV test for mechs, studying rules and procedures until some other user could come on and quiz me, all in the operation of fictional mechs in a text-based turn-based role play environment. And I read at least a few battletech books. Lots of weird vague memories of things I haven't thought about in 20 years, and but for this Kickstarter, I probably never would've thought of again. Getting old is weird.

Harebrained feels like they can do no wrong right now. This looks really great!

Does GoG have Crescent Hawk's Revenge? I so need to play it again!

Shadowrun was disappointing to me but I'm confident they can't misinterpret a boardgame the same way as a roleplaying game.

I played Battletech to death back in the day and, while standup slugfests were all fine and good, the game was much more entertaining in campaign mode. I think this is where Mechwarrior Tactics fell down but it seems to be a key focus of this iteration so I'm quite optimistic.

Yah... nostalgia is strong with this one. The resolution is terrible. The controls are crude. But man this game really scratches an itch. There were on the cusp of greatness. So many games have stood on its shoulders since then: RTS's, the Baldur's Gates, the Neverwinters, the Total Wars...

Found my old Mechwarrior 2 CDROM from 1995 and downloaded the soundtrack. Remains the best music in a PC game ever composed.
