Undertale - a traditional RPG where no one has to get hurt

Steam listing for Undertale

This game is really drawing me in, even though it's very "old school" in its visual presentation. Despite my age I don't have the history of playing lots of the older RPGs like some folks here, but I'm really impressed with the story and humor in this title. There are a lot of traditional elements and a lot of more modern themes. And it's mostly the work of a single person, even the music.

Has anyone else checked it out? It's getting almost universal praise but in very small circles, from what I can tell.

I'm playing this, I posted about it in the JRPG thread today. I'm doing a full pacifist run

I backed it on Kickstarter! I haven't played it yet though, although Demyx keeps telling me I need to do so, so I'll probably play it a lot sooner than most KS projects I've backed

I tried for the full pacifist run but couldn't figure out how to spare one of the bosses, so I ended up killing them reluctantly rather than being killed. Then I just decided to "live with" my actions and continue on rather than trying to load an old save.

Apparently there's a big number of variations in the ending depending on how the game is played. I still can't get over how this is mostly the work of one person.

I hit some fun stuff in the game yesterday. Sadly it's impossible to really talk about this game without spoilers. I just made it to the fire-themed zone.

I just want to say one word: Jerry.

Ugh, that guy.

My favorite character so far is Papyrus. Napstablook is also pretty great.

EDIT: Made it to the Core. The series of events concerning a particular robot were great.

Why aren't more people playing this? People in this community are usually all over indie darlings.

This is in my queue down the line. Someday I'll get around to it. It certainly looks intriguing.

They're too busy playing that other indie darling: Rocket League.

“The puzzles aren't particularly impressive.”
10/10 – Destructoid

“I have a couple of issues with the user interface.”
10/10 – PCInvasion

“If there’s a criticism to be had, it’s that sometimes Toby Fox doesn’t know when to let a joke go.”
10/10 – The Jimquisition

Awesome! They're practically selling this game.

I'm saved right before the True Ending. I'm walking the world to talk to everyone first -- it seems like every single person in the game has new dialogue.

Everything from the moment I reached the Capital onward was nuts.

Do not read any spoilers about this game if you're planning to play it at all, and if you're thinking of playing it you absolutely should play it.

Spoiler:

Reaching the castle only to find a perfect replica of Toriel's house.
Flowey crashing the game, then restarting it to find his final boss form waiting for you. That entire boss fight is easily one of the most insane things I've ever seen in a game.
Just in case Flowey wasn't enough surreal horror, you then get to visit the True Lab.
And of course, the final battle where you save everyone's souls.

Yeah, I'm pretty tempted to play this.

Some of the videos I watched seemed like you needed a controller for the mini games and I'm just not that into pads when laptop gaming.

Think I'd be alright with just k/m?

What was the key to

Spoiler:

not killing Undyne in the fight with her?

That was what spoiled my attempt at being a full pacifist.

You don't need a controller. I managed without too much difficulty, with the disclaimer that a pacifist run is easier than some of the other routes you can take.

Spoiler:

Undyne tells you can't move when you are green, right? There are a few turns where she turns your heart red again and another choice opens up.

Just popping in here to say "hOI!"

I'll get this game eventually. Looking forward to it!

Finally started playing today. Just got to the end of the opening section. Whoa.

Just finished the game. That was AMAZING

Turns out, this is a really good game to play on Halloween.

Finished a True Pacifist run last night. That's a much much better payoff than the original ending (which isn't surprising). Anyone who gets to the end of their first playthrough and doesn't similarly feel really satisfied should definitely give it another go.

Also,

Spoiler:

Sans defining the true meaning of LV and EXP

Is probably the best subversion of genre conventions I've seen since BioShock.

This will probably be at or near the top of my GOTY vote this year. Such a wonderful gem of a game.

This is still on my list to pick up and play (crazy when your backlog spills over into a purchase backlog!). Glad to continue hearing such good things about it!

Yeah, I can't really see any other way to play it than True Pacifist, shoptroll. I got maybe 30 minutes in to the game initially and had killed some monsters. The further I played the more wrong that felt. Started over. Currently, I'm at the spider lady. Got stuck and haven't gone back yet. I'll get to it eventually and finish.

After finishing True Pacifist, I tried out the Genocide run for a bit. Didn't make it to Snowdin Town, it was way too cruel and depressing.

It was a good excuse to do True Pacifist again. I yellowtexted everyone's names, got every possible phone call (except maybe a few in the Ruins), opened up a couple of secrets etc. And now I plan to leave my completed save file in peace. Maybe I'll feel like doing another True Pacifist run someday in the future but I'm otherwise content with my experience with the game.

Easily my game of the year, although admittedly I haven't played much new this year.

I hate the spider lady boss fight so much. There's nothing good, clever, or fun about it. It's just bad.

But the spiders clap along!

The music though!

It's also skippable...

Spoiler:

...if you kept a spider donut/cider from the Ruins.

Didn't have that. Backtracked and bought a crap ton of hot dogs and managed to plow through it.

Edit: The boss fights can be really frustrating because you don't know how long a long fight will last. Going through that 10 times and failing without having any idea how close you are is really awful. There's no sense of progress, and it's not like a Souls boss where you're learning.

That fight was a KS backer fight and is probably one of the weaker bosses in the game.

Weaker as in "not implemented in an interesting way", obviously she's pretty strong! The next boss though is one of my favorites.

Yay! Looking forward to it.

If you're going pacifist you pretty much want to be running with as many healing items as you can fit in your pockets. Since you're going to be locked at around 20 Max HP nearly all the items are going to fill up your HP once it gets low. Oh, and if you've got the patience, try going back to whoever sold Bicicles and stock up your dimensional box with a handful. That will effectively double the number of healing items you've got on hand.

I also found keeping the Torn Notebook and Broken Glasses equipped helps a lot since they significantly increase the amount of time you're invulnerable after getting hit.

I agree that the game isn't very good about signposting if you're on the right track with the bosses, and I died on most of them multiple times. I think in general, if you find the ACT or MERCY options don't really do anything then you're supposed to just outlast them.

Yeah, that song is amazing.

Edit: Yeah, I've been using the torn notebook and cloudy glasses. I buy as many healing items as possible, but sometimes I run out of money.
