The Quarterly JRPG Club - Let's 'Grind' Down that Backlog!

You just tell me how you wanna roll here I'll update with whatever!

Maybe we should take a second vote when we've got a top 5 or so by nominations?

Actually yeah that sounds pretty good to me. How about nominations until Wednesday the 30th, then voting closes Friday morning? (I'll have to tally them up before I go out of town on Friday)

Also I'm realizing I should've put DQ8 higher on the list. Oh well. There's always next time.

DQ8 isn't on my backlog, but I always welcome any excuse to play it again.

I don't want to override the rules I set, so I'll let the system work itself out. We'll play it when we play it.

As for me, a couple of the top titles are games which I've deemed to be pretty long, and I've played through already. So, if one of those gets picked, I will happily continue working on other parts of my backlog while coming back to see how everyone likes them! (Xenoblade Chronicles, Ni No Kuni, FFXIII). However, in the case of FFXIII, I always have more hunts to do for that platinum trophy!

Glad I found this! I too have a huge jrpg backlog and I love collecting them.
My planned purchases for this year are Disgaea 5, Tales of Zesteria and Legend of Heroes.
As far as top off my current back log
Blue Dragon (x360)
Any Atelier games (ps3/vita)
Xenoblade (wii)
Any Hyperdimension game (ps3/vita)
FFX

But I'm pretty much ok playing anything on anything.

Hey Fastmav, I added yours, and consolidated some of the 'any in this series' to ones that people have already suggested, if that's cool!

These things are great for someone like me who has a bazillion games in their backlog! Nice idea. And three months is a nice slow burn, which makes me think I might actually be able to complete it, considering all other time demands.

I'll play anything I've got, but I'd probably put a bit of a priority on these:

Valkyria Chronicles
Fire Emblem ... anything
Final Fantasy V

Updated!

Might want to post this in the JRPG thread to get some more eyes on.

I'd love to participate in this during a quarter when there's not so many games coming out that I plan on playing.

This is a practice quarter for what it's worth, too, so, don't feel like you can't miss out!

How do we feel about the voting thing? I'd like to let everyone continue posting their choices until Wednesday, and then take a vote on some of the top entries. Should we just let people vote on anything with more than one nomination? Give people one vote? Any thoughts?

Also, going quarter to quarter, should we go down the list, or do this all again?

It also might be cool if people want to make a pitch for a particular game they've had their eye on. I'd like to say Grandia II, but I'm the only one with that on my pile by the looks of things!

That's on my pile too, but I haven't played the first, so I can't, in fairness, add that one yet

That seems cool - maybe I'll randomly pick (using random.org) after the first month?

Maybe pick a shorter game to start with?To give us some momentum.

Great idea! The JRPGs at the top of my to-play list are:

Valkyria Chronicles
Tales of Graces f (this one is actually in progress)
Disgaea anything
Tales of Xillia
Final Fantasy Tactics

Grandia I and II are like Final Fantasy I and II: Other than the name, they don't have much in common and can be played separately.

Considering that I add games to the backlog constantly (and I assume I'm not the only one who does that), I think we should re-do the whole 'top 5' process each time.

Plus, coming up with "Top X" lists is practically the Fantasy Football of JRPG's. Having to come up with a top list of unplayed jrpg's is a nice change of pace for us.

Okay! I just didn't know if it was too much work each time. But, it is every three months.

Still waiting on what you guys think on how we should pick. I have the top picks, and I could go for the game with the shortest time for this quarter, per FastMav's suggestion, but they all seem long-ish. Maybe randomly pick anything with more than one vote? Revote on the games with the most / second most votes?

Thoughts would be appreciated. We've got to do a pick starting tomorrow night.

Build a GWJ lottery machine, put in a ball with the game's name on it for each vote it received, then do a livestream of the drawing to determine the quarter's game.

*goes and buys lottery machine and a bunch of ping pong balls*

Legit though, this sounds hilarious. *goes online to look at lottery machines*

There's always random.org

That was my fallback. Farscry is really selling this stupid lottery ball idea on me, though. Could make for an entertaining video.

Cheap-o version is to just get a bunch of ping-pong balls and a rotisserie cage for a grill if you want to build something

I mean I'm looking at a bingo cage for $9 at Walmart - would be the cheapest option. I could just write something on the balls to represent the games, with Dry Erase, or something of the like. Thinking...

Wow, I was just being funny.

But on the other hand, that could make for some genuine entertainment. And you could host Bingo matches at your home too!

Does anyone know of a psychic octopus we could borrow?

Bingo cage bought :O
