Dying Light

Just wait till you get all your parkour skills up to snuff! The writing is meh, but the gameplay is a blast. Let us know what you think of nighttime runs. :)

I only watched it on YouTube, as RadBrad played it, and it was pretty interesting.

Does the game become more fun with difficulty on easy? I've been playing on medium - and streaming gameplay - and found the constant and stupid spikes in difficulty really annoying. So much so I'm considering giving up on the game, even though it will mean that I don't finish the video series.

The only real spike that I noticed were when going out at night, early on when you haven't attained a lot of your "powers" yet.

What are you experiencing that jumps the difficulty for you?

The only real surprise difficulty I've found so far is getting fireworks to friggin work.

Also, the first switch to night is pretty brutal, but I was barely focused, really. I was all "oh night, neat, sec lemme pet the dog" and something jumped me and hit me three times and then I died.

I blame myself, there.

Some of the set pieces and missions. I can't figure out where the new spoiler tag is so

Spoiler:

Having to plant c4 on pillars in the building site and needing to run past all the zombies

The bloody stupid fight against the mutant cop in the arena

Various other bits and pieces

So I'm gonna do some digging but I wanted to throw out the question here in case someone already ran into this - the game will not stop stuttering every 10-ish seconds. How badly it skips or hangs kinda varies, but my computer has run stuff like Borderlands Pre-Sequel with everything at max without a hitch and yet Dying Light won't stop doing this even when I put everything on its lowest setting just to see. So it's not a graphical issue, I guess, and I've been going through all my drivers to make sure it's not a driver issue. Nothing is really fixing it. I figured it was maybe a problem with the intro stuff since there were a lot of triggered events or maybe just some map stuff was being written/saved for the first time as I went through new areas. But it's not getting any better and I'm not too sure wtf is going on.

edit: NM, found it. For some reason the game kept refusing to save my view distance slider to minimum.

I was just about to post that, suggesting looking at the view distance slider. Glad you got it fixed.

Well, the last fight is officially the absolute worst.

Spoiler:

A series of hit-or-lose-immediately quicktime events in a game with absolutely no such events until then? Goooooood call. Really anticlimactic. If I had to friggin hear Rais say "YOU WERE RIGHT ABOUT ONE THING, CRANE" one more freaking time...

Quit sucking then.

Nah, I really didn't like the ending sequence either. QT events should be used VERY sparingly in most games.

New DLC trailer

Dying Light: Far Cry

I never finished this, but now I want to play more...

Guess I need to get my parkour skills sharpened for another breach into Zombietown!

I'm getting ready to finally play this game after enjoying the demo. It looks like some weapon DLC was included in the season pass. Is there any DLC that should be disabled because it makes the game too easy?

Also, is normal or hard mode recommended for a first play through?

Go with hard, normal gets way to easy pretty quickly.

I wouldn't worry about the dlc. none of it is a big deal.

Thanks!

So far the game is pretty cool. In the early game I took on some zombies when there aren't too many so I can boost those skills. Sometimes it seems like they are generated pretty close by when you're fighting. There were times I thought there were only 3 in the area, but more kept showing up. Jumping seems pretty natural and while the writing isn't great, the early missions feel like you're contributing to the survivor camp. Pretty atmospheric.

...

Yikes, I just had a rough experience at that first night mission, trying to run in the dark with a whole bunch of baddies on my tail. I couldn't see where I was going and used the flashlight some of the time to try and get my bearings. I've been focusing on missions and don't know if I'm getting ahead of my level. I'm still swinging things like hammers which are having trouble killing guys. I don't even try to kill one of those heavy hammer wielding dudes.

Climbing towers is a little cumbersome.

I have had some hairy 'run for your life' moments at night. It gets pretty tense when you can see a whole lot of the guys on the mini map with their red cones. There have been times when I was just running blindly in the dark, not able to see much of anything. When I have a choice I take a slower, more deliberate method.

...

Wow, the mission to get a sample of a bolter was intense. 28% done with the story. My favorite attack is stunning zombies by jumping off of their heads and then slicing and dicing. The combat is a little chaotic for me to really think too highly of it. It isn't bad, but I feel like I'm flailing around. A target lock may help. I'm doing OK I think, but it feels a bit sloppy or something.

I'm not very good at the parkour. I tried a couple of the trials and couldn't even finish by the time limit. I got close on a medium difficulty one, but failed.

This may be my 2nd favorite zombie themed game, after The Last of Us. I don't like how the player doesn't have a say in the story in Dying Light. I don't like the decisions my character makes. The missions do have a good feel to them. Even the fetch us some crayons mission. It just feels like everyone is trying to pull together and live a normal life.

This is the reason I stopped playing. I'm not sure if you are there yet, so

Spoiler:

The nope moment for me came when your character deliberately destroys the vaccine drop in order to force a meeting with another political player in the city.

If I'm going to play, I need to at least identify a little bit with the character, and that was simply unacceptable.

Yep, I got to this part and was the main moment for my comment above. It doesn't ruin my enjoyment of the game, but I would definitely enjoy it more if I could shape the story.

Got to about the 50% mark of the story and I think I like the new scenery. I had some more really intense moments - I was getting some turpentine and some chemical from the warehouse and wasn't keeping track of time. Next thing I new night was approaching and I still had more stuff to get. I couldn't find one of the items. I didn't want to leave and come back in the daytime so I pressed on. I had killed many of the zombies, but there were some stragglers. 2 or 3 of those nighttime baddies entered the warehouse so it was a game of cat and mouse. I was still trying to locate the items. AFter some close calls, I decided to just hide in a train car and wait it out. I was so happy when morning came.

I also recently got the grappling hook and my newest ability will let me attack zombies when I'm camouflaged as one of them. That should make things a little more manageable.

Some of the cheesy dialog is actually amusing. I'm pretty much enjoying all aspects of the game. I've got about 25+ hours into it. Let me add my name to the list of people who didn't like Dead Island, but does like Dying Light. So glad I got it.

I had a great time with the game, I just wished they had put more work into the MP aspects of the game.

This game is a real blast. I wasn't sure I could get into it at first because I was treating it as a typical zombie fighter. If you do that you are pretty much never going to win. Eventually you get to a point where you are adept and skilled enough to fight them of course, but if you do it immediately, it only leads to frustration.

If you want to have some combat power early,

Spoiler:

It takes some work and good timing, but you can defeat one of the big guys and take his concrete-and-rebar club. Its a slow and awkward weapon, but it's very powerful and will let you just smash your way through regular zombies in most cases.

Grabbed this on the sale on Steam. Liking it, just wondering how many people use a controller? I am using M&K and melee fighting seems clunky with that control scheme. Should I just plug in the 360 controller and be done with it?

Eh, I honestly think that the controls are going to be a bit clunky regardless of M&K or Controller. This game really just gives me the feeling of Dead Island with some tacked on parkour elements. I don't really see a benefit either way from M&K to controller aside from personal preference.

I used an XBox 360 controller. Combat does have kind of a sloppy feel to it, but I think it feels a little more fluid with the controller. I used to be strictly a M+KB guy, but the more I use a controller for games like this the more I like it. I try and stay away from a controller when I need to aim precisely, but did OK in this game with the controller when using a gun.

Pretty excited for the new stuff coming out in February!

I'm curious about the whole updated visuals thing. Is that something that's going to be applied to systems as well?

I watched all 43 or so episodes of RadBrad's play-through and while the campaign story is spoiled I am still eager to pick this up on sale at some point.

It's out today! Now I have to fit this into my XCOM2 and FarCry 4 addictions.

Fired up the demo and wow, this game feels right to me. Crafting from a menu felt a bit odd but otherwise I enjoyed running and jumping off of zombies.

Fighting was okay, though it feels really random on how many hits it takes to kill the zombies. Better to jump kick em to death.

Naturally, I died a bunch as I explored and tried things out. Then I got to nighttime and loved it!

I completely understand the criticism that this game would play better in 3rd person, but it makes it way more tense in 1st person.
