OH MY GOD.

So VERY MUCH this!

A co-worker of mine got an early copy of this today, so we played it at lunch. I was already intrigued by what I saw at PAX and now I'm 100% sold. I'm heading to the eShop to pre-order right now.

It's not just that making levels was actually fun, which it was. It's that the levels included in the game via the 10-mario challenge are really good. Like REALLY good. We had a blast handing the gamepad around and playing through a bunch of them. Then the games owner made an insidious little adjustment to the start of the tutorial level, with a pipe that spawned winged goombas and a flying tower of Koopa's blocking the path forward. It was great times.

My one complaint - The whole shake the object to change the mode. For those who don't know yet, if you want say a Red Koopa you have to pick up a Green Koopa and shake it back and forth with the stylus. It's annoying, and takes way too long to change. I would have much preferred a way to just pick up a Red Koopa from the menu. If there is a way to do that, please tell me!

OK, going to pre-order because instead of doing that I typed this.

That was fast. It looks like the really slow unlock speed for tools has been patched out. Now, instead of unlocking new tools each day for nine days, you simply unlock them in batches as you work. Some people are saying they unlocked everything in a few hours.

Well, hello new favorited thread! I have pre-loaded.

I will not make it to midnight.

Goodnight, sweet Mario Makers. Looking forward to tomorrow. After work. Stupid work.

I think I made a huge mistake putting this on my birthday wishlist

For those about to make, I salute you.

Yay!

From what I've read the unlock period was bumped down from 1 day per interval to 15 minutes.

I started playing this tonight, and it's just pure, unadulterated childhood nostalgia joy for me. Play through the first 10 Mario challenge and then hopped around user created levels. I can't wait to see what tortire tests my daughter sets up for me!

Picking up the Limited Edition from EB tomorrow (Artbook, game and Amiibo). They are price matching a BigBox store ($69 instead of $89), and as an added bonus I get a sweet set of fridge magnets for pre-ordering.

YOU GUYS, ITS HERE. THE DAY IS HERE.

Picked up a copy on my lunch break...going to try not let it distract me from homework over the weekend.

...gonna try...

Grabbing it tonight. I'm still not sold on it in my behalf, but my roommate is super psyched so I'm gonna do him a solid and pick it up.

It's going to be a LOOOOONG day at work

The "idea booklet" that comes with the game has a ton of cool artwork in it, including what appears to be some original level design sketches from Super Mario Bros. with overlays of images from the game itself. Even without firing up the example levels that it references, the booklet is a really nice bit of packaging that immediately got my imagination running.

I've updated the OP since we're at release day, and will be working to try to keep it updated each day. Suggestions for what to add are quite welcome!

I bought digital last night, as I said I would. I'm working on a difficult but not absurd level, I think it's coming along pretty well. Hopefully I'll have something to post tonight.

I played some world levels which play themselves. They were very clever, and there aren't many of them so I recommend checking them out. One of them also happens to be the highest starred level right now so easy to find!

I was disappointed to learn that you can only use the Amiibo costumes in the original NES palette, but it makes sense. The Sonic, Robin, and Ike costumes are all awesome but the best one is the Palutena costume. I am definitely going to sprinkle a bunch of those in my levels.

I thought these seven level design tips from actual level designers were great. Short, to the point, and really important.

Fired it up this morning. Stoked. Will post more later, just wanted to get this thread on my radar.

Dun uploaded a first level! nothing hugely special - I've not really unlocked...anything...yet bar the basics.

I watched the kids play around with this this afternoon. I didn't see any way to make an overworld for linking the levels together. I think they've missed the point if this isn't in the plans.

I caved and bought this today. Played a few levels really quick at lunch. Seems great!

I don't know about an overworld, but there were announced plans to let players string levels together into a sort of world or playlist.

The way it looks like that works at the moment (unless there's something that unlocks later or I'm missing something) is it picks a random collection of 8 or 16 levels (on easy and normal), ties them all in a row and gives you a set number of lives to get through to the end.

I had thought it was specifically said that the player could chain their own levels together, but this was a video a few months ago. That feature might have been cut or will be added later in a patch.

Disappointed that I see no way to chain my own levels together yet.

Otherwise, fired it up, had time to let it update and fiddle around a bit, played some 100 Mario Challenge, and now I'm doing chores & such (stepdaughter's birthday this weekend, party tomorrow).

All I can say is with what little time I had to mess with it, it's looking to live up to my internal hype.

The kid is loving this. He makes absurd things in Disney Infinity mostly because it's so tough to control (he's 5) but he's doing some really creative stuff with this. And he's only using the basic stuff!

It's everything I hoped it would be. I can't wait to actually get to do something with it! Go to bed kid!

Well, no surprise here, I'm seeing mostly atrocious levels in the random 100-mario challenge stuff.

I made two levels I've uploaded, the second needs an overhaul. But my "Farscry 1-1" level (6C9A-0000-0019-C056) I'm actually pretty happy with. I let my fiancee play, who likes Mario games but admittedly sucks at them. It took her about ten tries to beat it, and she struggled at the parts that I expected would be learning curve territory for true new players (for example, she still never holds the run button down for anything; I didn't put the first "run required" jump in until 1-2 so she wouldn't get discouraged in 1-1).

Sadly, 9 people have played my level, only 4 have cleared it, and no stars or comments yet. I suspect it's going to be tough unlocking all 100 uploadable course slots.

I just tried it, cool course, feels like it would fit in with the original Mario pretty well! A lot of the courses, including the one I uploaded, are just filled with junk and don't have much of a flow to them.

One unfortunate side effect of the unlock system I've noticed is the vast majority of levels all have the Day 1 stuff, and there are not very many SMB3 or SMW levels yet. That will correct itself over time, but it's kind of a bummer on Day 1 anyway.

I'm going to save most of my impressions for a review, but holy crap what a delightful thing this is!

I'm watching my daughter play the 10 Mario challenge, and for an eight year old who's never played a Mario game she sure did well.

Just wow!

So, uh, I thought the unlocks were gonna come faster. Still stuck waiting 9 days for everything?
