Rocket League Catch All

I had a blast playing with some gwjer's last night. I was trying to get my mic working, but it didn't seem to be.

I tried a new tactic yesterday that is very effective when you are playing with a team where the whole team is going for the ball. Play the goon.

I've wondered why more don't do this in different situations too. There are times when the ball in bouncing nearly straight up and down and a couple cars are waiting for it. The offensive team is going to try to score or push in further towards the net and the defensive is going to try to block that hit. It seems the best tactic for the defensive would be to ram into the offensive player waiting. Then you don't have to block the hit because there won't be a one.

It works in the opposite sense too. If you are offense and you have three cars waiting for the ball to be down, having all three jump into it at the same time doesn't help much, especially when they have three cars doing the same. Instead if you get one or two to knock around the defense, it creates a line for the ball to be knocked into the net.

I'm terrible - but I'm around tonight if anyone wants to play! I'm also investigating the possibility of a headset for the first time ever thanks to this.

I'm planning to be on late night eastern (around midnight) if anyone wants to run some late matches.

I was pretty proud of myself after this one.

Separately?...MEH but strung together? EPIC!

I added you, though I may not be on tonight, as the semis for the Gold Cup are this evening (starting in four minutes, even).

Hopefully Jamaica wins the final, now. Anybody but Mexico.

I hate CONCACAF even more tonight than I did yesterday, and I didn't think that was possible.

I can't decide if the different car models have unique properties or not. I think I notice that the smaller frames make it more likely that I whiff on a volley, but it may be my imagination.

I think I read the developer posting on steam about how the hit boxes for the cars were different, with regard to their general shape, but that there were no stat differences otherwise.

I actually like going in reverse when I am playing the defensive role. I will be mid field when action is going on in the offensive zone, but as the ball starts moving towards the defensive zone I drive backwards to keep the action in front of me. The lines on the field as well as the location of the powerups give me an indication when I am getting close to the goal.

Also backflip for a speed boost while reversing.

One friend and I got a really good offensive going where we were basically using dump and chase tactics, and he'd try to center from the corners while I would hang back around midfield and use boost to attack when appropriate. It worked really well considering none of us are very skilled with the controls yet.

This works well for my team too, we notice we really run the score up on other teams that don't do this.

It seems like that's the meta right now. Chip and chase. Keep some boost to recover to defense if necessary. I'm surprised when we run into a ball-chase team now. They're mostly getting wrecked (run up scores).

Something I noticed last night while fiddling with the options...adjusting the FOV makes a huge difference in your field awareness.

What FOV do you use?

You can also move the camera further back and above the car for a better angle as well. I did this for a while, but then it made me feel cheap. The game is so perfectly tuned I went back to the default settings, just to stay in the spirit of the game.

A note for PC players: If you have multiple monitors, you can play split screen games with each player getting a full monitor to themselves. There's a small edit you have to make in an .ini file, but other than that, its easy and works well. Google steam for the exactly setting to fix.

I've wanted couch co-op games on pc for so long, and not only does RL have splitscreen, but I can do it on separate monitors, so it's perfect to play with the kids or anyone else on a team of 2.

Greatly enjoying the game, even on a pretty low-end laptop. Mixolyde79 on steam! Do we have a steam group, yet? Rocket Leaguers with Jobs? Employed Auto Footballers?

Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Car Racers with Jobs

... No really. That's what it is.

The next strategy I've begun to incorporate is to flip for a speed boost instead of using boost power. You sacrifice manuverability for the duration of the flip, but if you know you're going straight for the next few seconds, a flip is a free, easy speed up.

I think the "goon game", as discussed earlier in this thread will develop pretty soon as well. There's certainly some time when targetting the opposing car is at least if not more useful than targeting the ball.

I love all the hockey terminology that is being employed when discussing this game. I noticed a player in 2's going "goon" last night when we were wrecking them (we played a few rematches). Once we knew it was going on, it wasn't all that hard to avoid, but he was going "all in" on the strategy. It seems like using it selectively would be really effective. It seems to be effective in 4's where some of the teams go for an "all time goalie" strategy. Somebody hanging out in the goal constantly is a pretty easy target. Even if you don't go full demolition, just knocking the goalie around renders him largely ineffective.

Goon game in 1's is op.

How well does this work split screen on a TV? I'm having a party in a few weeks and I'm thinking of picking this up to add to the Steambox Nidhogg/Towerfall/Street Fighter/Castle Crashers/Monaco/Jackbox Party Pack rotation...

Ooh, neat! Thanks for the tip. I'll have to give this a go at some point.

There is a youtube video on how to do it, but I don't have the link handy.

I am very much in love with this game. Playing it on Steam.

Enjoying the heck out of this.

Group invite please.

Good games, DSG and fuzzyslug!

Yeah, good games! My nephew and I could be up for some late night games the next couple of evenings. He's visiting from far away Idaho for the next week and this has been our game of choice for the last couple of nights.

Added some of you for PS4 Rocket League. If anyone is looking for another Rocket League player I'm SirRockford on PSN.

Got it the other day on Steam, awesome fun!

OK. I think I'm caught up on invites. I also opened up all the permissions for members, so you guys should be able to invite, make announcements, schedule events, etc. If you haven't received an invite yet and still need one...message me on steam.

Thanks!

Anyone else finding that the 2v2 mode is the most enjoyable when playing with randoms? I don't have a heap of people on my PS4 list yet, so when I'm playing with others, 2v2 seems to have the best success with someone actually hanging back and defending while the other goes forward. Whereas 3v3 solo is just a sh*tfight with everyone going for every ball all the time. It's like watching under-10s soccer. :S

I find myself playing a ton of ranked 2's. It does seem easier to get into a rhythm with your partner.

In 3's I keep getting knocked out of position by my own team and it makes me insane.
