Miniatures Gaming (Tabletop and Board): Catch-all

Uhh... why did I only now find this thread? ._.

The pictures of painted models I have seen already produces guilt about the larger group of Menoth models sitting beside me, all for the most part unpainted :c

Don't feel guilty; I have way too many models that are as yet un-assembled/primed/painted. I could be independently wealthy and single, and still never get everything done in my then-abundant free time that I would want to. On the plus side, I can't imagine any point in my future where I will ever be lacking for hobbies to engage in!

I bought this for my Robotech RPG Tactics game and it arrived yesterday. I have to say that I'm impressed. For about $50, it gives me 24 1'x1' tiles (for a 6' x 4' gaming area) and a bunch of cardboard-ish buildings that are prefolded and cut. All I have to do is fold them out and glue the roofs. I got mine from eBay which ended up being slightly cheaper though it was still shipped from the UK.

Do we have any Hordes/Warmachine players in the house?

I havent played in 3 years but I own a lot of it and used to play a lot (and I still follow this thread), so I guess I count?

Right on, I was hoping there would be someone in here with it. What factions did/do you play?

I have a large Cygnar and Skorne armies and small Trolls and Khador armies. I was probably more into the collecting and painting, as my record doesn't really justify the amount of models I have How bout you?

Trolls and Blindwater Congregation. Blindwater started as merely minions I'd bought to use with my trolls, but eventually decided to expand on by getting some new warlocks. I played Convergence of Cyriss for a while, but I really couldn't get behind the focus mechanic, so I recently sold them.

Trollbloods are definitely my main tournament faction, while Gators I use when I want a break from trolls. I'll occasionally toss a few minions into my troll lists, but that's rarer since the Gatorman Posse is no longer anywhere near as universally useful as it used to be.

I dont suppose anyone has tried Dreadball? I'm somewhat interested in a lower bar-to-entry miniatures game and thought it looked interesting, but I havent seen any local games posted at the FLGS. It might not be very popular.

I think Guild Ball is taking all its lunch money at the moment. A lot of people flock from Warmachine into it due to its similar precise rules. It is a bit more of a miniatures game, each player is a unique character, 6 players tops, free measuring (at all time!). I love the playbook system, where one hit can't just kill a character, but the better the hit, the more options you unlock to choose one from. Check it out, all the rules are free and you can even download cardboard cutouts for all figures(!). http://guildball.com/

Well that looks fantastic! I had never heard of it. Thanks for pointing me that way.

I managed to score a copy of Space Hulk used for $80.

Merry Christmas to me, and to everyone who buys $170 board games and then gets bored with them before they even remove all of the figures from the sprues!

Speaking of modular space ship horde-mode board games, has anyone tried Capitol Offensive, the Schlock Mercenary board game? I got a copy as part of the Kickstarter, but haven't tried it yet. I'm hoping it's not as complicated as it looks.

Re: Space Hulk. I have no idea if the news has filtered into this thread, but GW is bringing Specialist Games back. Necromunda is going to be the first game they are going to bring out, with several smaller addons to release later. Battlefleet Gothic, Mordheim, Blood Bowl and Space Hulk are all going to be under that new (old) SG wing.
Lets see what this brings.

Does that mean there could be a fully assembled/colored version of Space Hulk for us non-painters?

I have it, and I love it. It has just enough depth to be interesting without a lot of extra measurements and fiddly bits to track. I don't know how popular it is, which sucks, because it's a great game. I haven't tried Guildball, but I have heard it's pretty good. I suggest avoiding Chaosball, though: it's not great.

I doubt that very much. Games Workshop has styled itself for a few years now as a model company first and gaming company way way less than before. So you have to assemble your grey or purple Genestealers yourself.
Careful, don't glue your fingers together!

Hey guys I've been working on my own sort of miniatures wargame that looks to solve some of the problems with these games, especially the time commitment and cost. I've got a first draft of a rulebook and I'd love to get some feedback on it. PM me if you think you'd be interested in helping out.

Arise thread!

I just bought into Dust Tactics and it seems to be tickling a good spot. I know it has been addressed 6 years ago, but I just wanted to add what I like about it. Between beautiful minis that don't take hours to put together and quick games to setup and play, I'm really digging it. The rules seem relatively simple too.

Any suggestions for the newbie? I bought the new BATTLE FOR ZVEROGRAD - Primed 2 Player Starter Set (Allies/SSU) and an additional walker for each, so I have about 40-ish points for each side.

I was taught the game and was able to demo it at PAX Unplugged. I was informed that my purchases there are now officially my Christmas present.

Edit: The one thing I don't like is the sexualization of women in the minis and artwork. I get that it is somewhat reflective of pinups of the time, but it is over the top.

Objectification of women in miniature games is pretty endemic. Male dominance of that industry from the audience to the designers and artists has become this nasty feedback loop. Some do better. Women in Warmachine are generally just as badass as anyone else without stripping down.

I'm all into Dust 1947. Honestly it has become a bit of a crack habit.

For any of you that play this, I had an idea to adapt some of the scenarios in the Dust 1947 rule book into a campaign. Here is what I came up with. Please feel free to critique and provide feedback. I haven't tried this out yet (but hopefully will soon).

Dust Campaign
Total Attacker AP: 200
Total Defender AP: 150

Situation: The attacker springs an all-or-nothing surprise attack on the defender’s coastal city.

Special Rules:
• The attacker starts each scenario with a max of 100 AP points. The defender AP points are defined by the scenario AP point percentage (unless otherwise noted).
• At any time, a player may “retreat” a unit from the field by exiting the unit from the edge of their deployment area. That unit will be available for the next battle, fully healed.
• Scenarios are from the Dust 1947 Rule Book, with setups and deployments as written unless noted otherwise here. Reserves work as defined in the rules. No variant rules are in play (unless otherwise desired).

Scenarios:
1. Scenario 105: Beach Assault – The Attacking force surprises the
defender with a beach assault.
a. Defender AP – 50%
b. If defender does not have a strongpoint unit, a bunker or
building may be substituted.
c. Attacker must win this scenario for the campaign to continue.

2. Scenario 106: Hold the Line – The Defender desperately tries to
hold the Attacker from reaching the city.
a. If Attacker wins, go to Scenario 107.
b. If Defender wins, go to Scenario 108.

3. Scenario 107: City Showdown – The fight for the city starts.
a. If Attacker wins, go to Scenario 115.
b. If Defender wins, go to Scenario 108.

4. Scenario 108: Forest Firefight – The attack has failed and the
Attacker seeks to salvage whatever forces are left.
a. If Attacker wins, the attack is a failure but some forces are
saved to fight another day. Defender Conditional Victory.
b. If Defender wins, the Attacker forces are soundly defeated.
Defender Total Victory.

5. Scenario 115: Sewers – The city is lost, the Defenders seek to
escape through the sewers.
a. Scenario calls for Infantry units only. If either side does not
have any infantry units, they automatically lose.
b. If Attacker wins, the city is completely conquered. Attacker
Total Victory.

c. If Defender wins, the Attacker maintains control of the city, but
the Defender maintains a resistance. Attacker Conditional
Victory.

I'm trying to get into Warmachine now (with Khador) and am getting a Winter Guard infantry unit painted now (or trying to). It's tough setting aside so much time to painting everything, but I want all my things painted before I try and hit tables.

This wargaming system is eating away at my already compromised self-control. I adore the Thirty Years War as a gaming period. And those models!

Just trying to finish up my Winter Guard Infantry. Still need eyeballs and bases. I just heard about some of the Community Integrated Development happening with Khador stuff, and I'm super excited to get more things painted!

You can't link an entire gallery with the image link. You can post to the gallery as a normal link though. In order to use an image link you have to click on your individual pictures and copy their "direct link" (or whichever other one actually ends in .jpg).

Thanks Yonder!

Hey! Look what I did!

First time in about...

*checks watch*

...25 years or so. I'd like to say I was rusty but...this is still light years better than I USED to be at painting these damned things.

10p included for scale (these Mansion of Madness miniatures are TINY! I've certainly not picked an easy set to practice with :O )

Four of the player characters finished. Four more Core game figures and two expansion figures to go, then I can think about what I want to do with the monsters, because the bases they come with by default are absolutely terrible.

I've seen some people sticking them on clear perspex bases instead, which seems like a good idea to me.

Two more down!

four more investigators to go (so far - I'm eyeing that other expansion pack in a wallet worrying way) and hopefully by then the bases for the monsters should have arrived and I can start on them, too.

Anyone else psyched for the new Monsterpocalypse? I was a big fan of the original, and I'm pumped it's coming back as a paintable tabletop game with resculpted, bigger models.
