Portland, Oregon Meetups

Ok, arise ye thread.
I'm in town starting on the 18th, so something that weekend?
I'm flexible in terms of location. I like beer and am a tall, bespectacled engineer.

Would Saturday evening work to meet up for beer/food somewhere? I'm guessing evenings would work best for you since you're at a conference. Anyone else feel free to chime in with ideas and availability, and I'm sure we can figure something out.

Where-ish are you staying? I'll can let you know what some good beer places to check out are if you get some free time.

Bummed I'll miss it but I'll be away then.

Conference doesn't start until the monday, I'm coming up early and staying with family.
Apparently I'm bad at vacation so I'm working on getting better at it.

Ah. Would you want to meet up earlier on Saturday then maybe and ultimately get some dinner and beers somewhere? It's all up to you. We could go to Ground Kontrol when it's not crowded in the afternoon. That place is always fun but not particularly great to start out at because it's fairly loud.

Could even do lunch, walk/cab around to fun places, and then dinner if you need to burn most of a day away. That might end up involving a lot of beer, though.

Another option would be to meet up at Guardian Games in the afternoon or evening. They have some board games to play there and people can bring games to play. If that's gonna happen, I would probably want to reserve a table ahead of time which is easy to do.

Flying out today.
So we settled on saturday with this Ground Kontrol place?

That'll work! What time are you thinking? Also, we're talking the 20th, correct?

No the 13th, cause I am bad at reading calendars, and also procrastinate a ton! And uh...afternoon?

Heheh. Yeah, the dates weren't matching up exactly. Good thing I asked. Let's say 1 so it's just after lunchtime. There aren't any events going on, so it should be pretty chill. If it's just you and myself, that'll be fine. We can play some games and then walk around and get some beer.

Okey dokey.

Leaving for Montana tomorrow, so I won't be able to make it. Have fun!

I should mention that I had a great time with boogle on Saturday. Hit up Ground Kontrol, the Fruit Beer Festival, and a couple of other places. It was a good afternoon in Portland, and you all missed out!

Favorite thing: We encountered a couple of the new Walking Dead pinball tables. They're very cool pinball machines, and it makes me happy that new pinball tables are getting made.

I'll be in Portland the weekend of the 27th for a show Sunday night. Any recommendations on places to stay that are "fun" or whatever. I'll have a car but I also tend to walk around a lot.

If you're looking for interesting accommodations this recently came up on my radar as a place I would love to stay. It's right by where a new friend of mine lives, and I think it looks kind of fun. Mostly, the sign is just rad. It's definitely a bit on the divey side, but I think it would be rad and fairly inexpensive if you're not wanting something super nice. It's on the east side, but right on the MAX line so you could easily get anywhere on the west or east side by hopping on the MAX. The other bonus is that it's fairly low-key out there in that particular location so it should be a relaxing but not inconvenient place to stay. It's within walking distance of Mississippi Ave which has tons of great restaurants/bars.

If you're wanting a nice but maybe too hip? place to stay, The Ace Hotel is pretty cool and right in the middle of everything on the west side. I got my brother a couple nights there as a wedding present back in the day. Recently they had a retro video game installation in the lobby.

The Jupiter Hotel is another cool one.

If you have a specific location you'd like to be, let me know. I might be able to suggest something more specific. What show are you going to?

Edit: Oh yeah, there's The Crystal Hotel which reopened up after being renovated at some point. It's in a fun spot and probably very cool. It's a McMenamins joint and they do OK beer and food. The restaurants are usually a bit overpriced, a little unadventurous, and they usually understaff, but it's definitely not bad at all.

I like that hotel's sign as well. I'll be in town for Eddie Izzard.

Nice! That'll be fun.

Treat yourself to Tasty and Alder for a meal. The octopus was great.

Pencil me in for this one! Pending spousal approval, of course.

Great!

We'll be there, too!

Cool! My roommate should be around and at least one other person I know will be coming over.

Heading out. Stop for some beverages and chips, and then I'll be on my way. 1-1.5 hours.

Great! We'll have some beer here but not too much else.

Gonna grab some lunch and head over.

A good time as always! Thanks for hosting!

No problem! That was very fun. I updated the OP with info on the next meetups.

I'm thinking about merging the next two scheduled meetups into just one meetup during The Portland Retro Gaming Expo weekend in October 17-18. Thoughts? The event got really good as of last year. The free-to-play arcade is ridiculous.

It's actually pretty cheap. Only $27 for a weekend pass.

Do any of the Portland folks play Netrunner? I bought it a while ago intending to play it with my son but think it might help if I get a few run through a first.

Great idea re: the Gaming Expo, TB. I hope to make it this year, but i'll have to break out for work in the afternoon.

Heya, I don't know why I hadn't looked for something like this a while ago. I'm over on the west side. Edge of Hillsboro and Beaverton and would love to get together, I'm at an SCA event 9-12 but I can try to make it to the next get together.
