Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a new "Igavania" (basically what most people call Metroidvania) from IGA aka Koji Igarashi. For those that don't know IGA has worked on a number of Castlevania games including Symphony of the Night (as an Assistant Director, Programmer, and Scenario Writer) and almost every Castlevania game made since then (except the most recent ones). IGA states that he is crowd funding this game because the publishers (i.e. Konami) don't believe that there is a market for this type of game anymore.

The Kickstarter launched today and has already blown past its funding goal (might even double it before the end of the first day) and is currently planned for release on Xbox One, PS4, and Steam (Mac, PC, and Linux crossplay).

The game will be 2.5D (2D gameplay with 3D graphics) and powered by Unreal Engine 4. Game is still in the early concept stages.

Since it's so heavily funded already, I'm debating not getting in on the KS.

But then again, it might be worth it to get the physical copy.

I reluctantly kickstarted it. I would rather not kickstart a game that doesn't at least have something to showcase, but due to the pedigree I figured why not.

Why no Wii U version, Iga? Sigh...

Answer is in the FAQ. Basically they choose to use Unreal Engine 4 and it doesn't support Wii U.

I haven't backed anything ok Kickstarter and probably never will at this point. Seeing as how I skipped Shadowrun and Mighty No 9 this has no shot, but I will gladly buy it on day one. I love what Kickstarter does but I am too tight on money to spend it on something I can't enjoy for god only knows how long.

Woo hoo!
See y'all in 2017!
or every time this thread is updated, who knows,
They don't need my money anymore, but I think I want the backer-exclusive boss.

Original Stretch goals: smashed

Additional Stretch goals: achieved

We're only one day into the kickstarter, and things appear to be rolling along. They've not even updated the KS achievements section, and a bunch of those should be unlocked already. I'm guessing they didn't anticipate this level of reaction.

I'll definitely be picking this up after release. Love the artwork style!

The concept artwork is hand drawn while the final game will be 3D so it will be interesting to see just how close they can get to that.

I'm hoping they stick as close to that as possible, but pretty psyched regardless.

If Mighty Number 9 is any indication, I wouldn't get your hopes up. Although I don't think Mighty #9 looks horrible, but it's certainly not as good looking as the concept art was.

I really really want that physical map of the castle
but that's my Oculus Rift money, I mean, I could probably afford both if I really wanted to, but holy sh*t that's a lot of money.

I like those bonuses too, but I don't have anywhere to put them. They'd wind up stuffed into a closet somewhere, so I'll just stick with the game.

Symphony of the Night was the game I played all of, entirely, 201%.

I hope this game comes out as unforgettable as SotN was. But we'll see, concept art is nice, but not enough.

Anyone else who's actually funding on the forum? If so, at what tier?

Personally, I'm funding for the sake of helping unlock as many stretch goals as possible (they keep coming). And I backed at $100 because I feel like that's the sweet spot for physical merch. And, it'll be nice and nostalgic to flip through a strategy guide (for this game, I'll probably need it).

Excited to hear what Jake Kaufman does if that stretch goal gets funded.

I funded at the $28 I think, enough to get a Digital Copy. I don't have enough faith that I'll love the game, seeing as I never actually got into Symphony of the Night. But maybe I'll feel differently once the game releases.

I'm getting a physical copy with the backer-exclusive content, so $60. I really don't get the appeal of the lapel pin, key chain, and soundtrack, so it was basically $40 more just for the strategy booklet.

I had originally planned to get Dark Grimoire ($150 and artbook, which would also get me the strategy booklet), but damn it, Starfighter Inc. and Formula Fusion all hit me at the same time as well.

I funded enough to get a digital copy of the game. Symphony of the Night is one of my favorite games, and I quite liked most of the GBA and DS ones too. I'm all for a open Castlevania that isn't restricted by handheld specs.

Interesting, but it warms my heart that you're going out on a limb to back it. I never got into SotN on my first play. I got it off of the XBLA, didn't feel right on my TV, since I played (and loved) the GBA/DS games first. I actually re-bought SotN on PSN, and it feels right at home on my Vita.

The only thing I'm wary about is if it feels right not on a portable medium. But, I'm positive they'll go above and beyond to make it feel like it deserves being a console game.

EDIT: For those who aren't backing, but interested; or those who didn't follow the link in the KS update. There's a really nice interview with Koji Igarashi that is really inspiring, to say the least. A really good read for those interested in the game.

Cross-posting from the WiiU thread:

Just got an e-mail reporting that Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is getting a port for WiiU by developer Armature Studios, a studio helmed by former Retro employees that worked on Metroid Prime. The only game they've developed that I'm aware of (other than the canceled Mega Man X FPS game) is Batman: Arkham Origins: Blackgate, which was good as long as you weren't in a boss fight. Curious to see if they'll be converting the game to the Unity engine or some such and how that'll work out, as Bloodstained is currently an Unreal 4 I believe they said.

Wasn't expecting a video of the game in motion, but I love the discussion of development and changes to make. Gets some real insight. Doesn't look impressive thus far, but that's no surprise. They made a flat stage to test the basics out on. Already has a very familiar look and feel to it though.

Shovel Knight is making a cameo appearance! It's really fun to see some of these Kickstarter projects lend out their characters to other projects or even when they link to other interesting projects in their updates.

Wow, this this has really taken off in the last 24 hrs. The kickstarter funds + PayPal might actually take it over 5M.

Roguelike stretch goal, here we come!

Third playable character!
I wonder how similar the roguelike dungeon thing will be to Portrait of Ruin's Nest of Evil and Order of Ecclesia's Large Cavern.

3rd playable character. Extra skin for the main char. Roguelike mode. Boss revenge mode.

Most funded/backed game on Kickstarter to date.

Woosh.

Most funded yes, but they don't have the same number of backers as Double Fine Adventure. They accomplished a larger funding amount by pricing their tiers higher including the $60 physical CE.

Sure, not the most backers, just the most funded. And yes, the physical edition being priced the same as a new release in a store (w/ bonus backer only DLC) probably got them there.

Still shows that there are plenty of fans willing to spend money on 2D sidescrolling platfomer RPG types. I'm not complaining. I've wanted a new game like this for years!

Same here. Basically since I finished Shadow Complex... speaking of which didn't Chair want to do a sequel to that before they were turned into Epic's mobile studio?

Boss Revenge Mode is where you play as a boss, sweet.

We're happy to announce that all backers at $60 or above who choose PC copies of Bloodstained will be granted beta access via Steam.

For anyone interested, here's a couple interviews that went up this past week:
