IT guy toolkit

But then we would be out of a job? Do you want to turn this site into Gamers without a IT job?

Spam Fighter is another good, free spam filter for Outlook or Outlook Express.

Saw this on /. today. Sysinternals has released a rootkit revealer.

Two new entries here.

IZArc - Great free Windows zip utility, opens almost anything. Slick clean and simple.

Crimson Editor - Free text editor for Windows, again it''s nice and clean, small and it''s got all the features I want

Just discovered this for myself:

http://www.logmein.com

An excellent remote-PC control system. Similar to GotToMyPC, except more flexible and has a free version, and to MyWebExPC except that it actually works.

A couple of other good utilities.

CDBurnerXP Pro - Another free burning app, and it''s not feature limited like Deepburner.

DVD Styler - maybe not IT related, but a completely free app for authoring DVDs. Only drawback is that you need the video already in DVD format.

Does anyone know of a program that is like Ghost but isn''t Ghost?

I''ve been noticing my computer is getting hotter and hotter. What do you guys use to montior tempurate and other assorted things? I remember Motherboard Monitor and coolmon but what do you ugys use now-a-days?

That must be all that triple-X, 2hot2handle dual screen pr0n of yours!!

And its already summer weather here.

Hmm I was going to say PowerQuest but they got bought out by Norton/Symantec last year or so.

Best I got now is a google search.

I don''t use anything to monitor this except the BIOS when I''ve having ''issues''. Although in the summer my computer room gets hot so it may not be a bad idea.

New MBSA tool is out.

Vers 1.2.1

Well, I gave up on SpamFighter. It filtered nothing and tacked a crappy signature on all of my email messages.

I opted for another product instead and it works flawlessly. Cloudmark Saftey Bar is incredible. I have only seen about 4 spam messages come through over the course of two weeks that I have been using it. My e-mail address is out there for all to see what with my resume being on the various job sites (Monster, Vault, Dice, CareerBuilder, TrueCareers, HotJobs, CareerJournal) and my subsequent spam ratio has gone up as well. This product works better than anything else I have ever used including MailWasher, SpamFighter and the built in Outlook tools.

For spam filtering, I''m rather fond of gmail.
I occasionally get false positives on newsletters and such from places like gamespot, alienware, corsair, but I very, very, very rarely actually get spam that makes it through the filters.

I use SpamBayes for Outlook, and so far it''s quite good. Takes a while to get it trained, but so it is with all statistical techniques...

You may also want to try adding 2 microsoft utilities.....

Sysprep - Mostly used in imaging pc''s or servers and creating new SID''s.

Print Migrator 3 - Used to backup print servers into a single cab file to store in a file share for backup or disaster recovery. I also use it to restore the cab file to newly built Citrix servers I build as this can save so much time by you not having to install 30 printers on the box. Just use the utility to restore the saved cab file from a similar server and it restores all the printers on the new server including permissions and everything....Great Utility!!!

Also nice to have is a registry editor such as Steven Hoekums (spelling?) registry editor i think its a free download....this tool can be a huge time saver if you have to find and replace many entries in the windows registry.

Anyone have a SID changer for XP? We want to create a ghost image of our PC''s with all the software installed but since we don''t know of a way to change the SID we can''t.

There should be a sysprep for XP as well, look in the Deploy.cab in the Tools folder on the XP install cd.

Can this be stickied again please?

Sticky for now but I think Pyro has magical ways of turning posts like this into books we can add to later. We'll see how it goes.

Unstickied, and can be access on the "Books" page. Any other helpful software threads I can now group together with this one and they'll always be available from the "Books" page as well as a book outline appearing when viewing each thread.

Updated. Whats up when editing the book there are two edit boxes? Also why is there a line, and big blank spot and another line under the post?

A couple of friends have subscriptions to this so I thought I'd post it.

4 update CDs per year (every quarter).

To qualify all you need to do is create a partner account (no certs or anything required just put in whatever company name you want) and go from there. As I said, four people I know use this plan as their way to get all the stuff they'll ever need for their home network (MS-wise).

I currently don't use it since I have friends that have access to the MS store and I paid under 300$ for Win2k3 Standard, Win2k3 SBS and and 3 copies of XP pro with no need to pay more; but if they ever go away I may do this.

thought I'd add this really cool program I've been using for a bit

SpywareBlaster
Free and paid version available.
I've been using it for about 6 months now updating once a week, and so far 0 spyware on my system.
Paid version includes an autoupdate option, but I just add a scheduled task for it to open once a week, and I update it manually.

Eezy: this is ridiculously cheap!

I upgraded my domain to Win2k3 and the meat of this post, WSUS about two months ago. There is a MS wiki for WSUS here.

Overall it's a much better product than the old SUS patch management. WSUS actually has some reporting and is much smarter about the clients. It will tell you what specific patches a client is missing and you can go approve those updates from the client status screen itself. Ultimately, you now only have to approve the patches you need not all the ones you think you need and with almost 500 patches in the repository that could be a big deal. I say could be because you can now batch approve updates using the shift and ctrl key combos we've come to love while selecting patches and then changing their approval status all at once.

You can even make groups for your clients now facilitating testing machines and servers vs. normal workstations.

If you manage more than 5 machines and have Win2X server OR you aren't large enough to get your boss to sign off on SMS go with this if you're running Win2K or higher, it's a life saver.

Eezy: upgrading to WSUS has been on my task list for months now. This might help me get off my butt and actually do it, since SUS is getting sunsetted in the coming year....

Also, selecting patches to approve with Shift and/or Ctrl == win.

Updated book with nlite and unattended xp installation guide. If anyone uses it, please post feedback on your experience.

Just created an nLite XP SP2 with a bunch of stuff stripped out, let's see how it does in VMWare...
