Deadwood Catch-All

Well, we have 2 episodes so far.

Some good happenings.

Although for some reason (maybe I've just been tired while watching...) the actors seen to be delivering their dialogue in a funny way.

Kind od deadpanish? (not a work I know!)

Maybe it is just the town yet they all talk like Harvard scholars. Some of the speech just seems out of place.

I think they changed the dialect. I seemed to me it was like they talked regular english before, and now they talk olde english.

I don''t notice any difference in the speech, but some of it has always seemed weird -- on purpose I think. They are totaly outlaw scumbags, yet a lot of them want to remain a part of polite society, so they mutilate polite speech to fit their colloquial language...that''s how I hear it anyway.

I think you hit it right on the nose hubb.

Yet another show I thought I would never watch and now I hope I never miss an episode.

Damn HBO, just finished watching the first season. This should come out on DVD now so I can watch it. Or make 24 episodes so I have more to watch. Nuts.

Yeah, that''d be a great idea...

Yeah, Deadwood has not missed a beat from last season. It looks to be another great year for this great series.

Anybody else think there''s something not quite right about the new Nanny? Cant put my finger on it, but it just seems odd to me the way Alma Garret is opening up, and talking to her like they''ve been best friends for years. Alma always struck me as someone who doesn''t easily open up and share whats on her mind, yet shes seems to relate to the Nanny almost like they are sisters.

Oh and on a slight derail, has anyone else caught the commercials for the new series ""Rome"" coming in November? If the production values & scriptwriting are anywhere near the caliber of HBO''s usually outstanding work this thing is gonna be a monster. I daresay it might just beat out I, Claudius for my alltime favorite Roman series/movie.

I''m probably with you, although it could probably be excused on the basis that the one time they really had their most intense discussion, Alma had been presented with one hell of a huge life decision, and may have been seeking any port in a storm to communicate.

Also recall that Alma opened up very quickly last year with the whore.

Good point, I''d forgotten ahout that.

Still, something about that nanny has my doom & gloom alarm going off...

Just finished watching season 2 episode 3. It seems this town is never going to get a break. I found it very interesting that the actor who plays Wolcott was the same person who played Jack Mcall, I wonder why they made that choice? He does an excellent job though.

Yeah I really like (in a creepy way) the new Wolcott character. I thought it was the same actor as Jack McCall...that''s weird. Maybe they just figured the actor was good enough and the fans are devoted enough to suspend disbelief -- I think they made the right call.

As for Alma Garrett, I think there is something a little more sinister to her than they''ve let on...she''s pretty hot too. I loved the armpit hair when she was laying nude with Bullock.

I didn''t even notice they were one in the same. While I''m sure he''s a fine actor and that''s part of the reason, I''m willing to bet that in this case it says more about my powers of observation.

BUMP!

Because I just finished watching the first season today. Holy crap, what a great show.

I was expecting more of a bang-up ending, but a lot of stuff resolved (or began) so I think it was fitting to have all of these plots set in motion, but then for a brief moment, just have all the people in Deadwood living together and having a decent time.

All I have to say is Bullock is a bad ass, and Alma''s pretty hot. I''m waiting for Swearingen to really start showing his true colors, but I''ve seen bits and pieces of the second season, with him all beat up, so I''m nervous to see what''s going to happen.

All in all, though, I think the doctor is my favorite character. Just the idea that this man basically gets by because he''s the only person with his skills, and he totally realizes it and doesn''t let Swearingen (or anyone, really) talk down to him. I''m glad he could help Jewel, and even if there was some sort of ""Weird Doctor/Gimp Lady"" sexual tension there at the end, it was nice to see them both happy.

Now, to start in on the second season!

I''m waiting for Swearingen to really start showing his true colors, but I''ve seen bits and pieces of the second season,

Actually, his true colors seem to be mild so far. I''m not sure if the character seemed so popular in the 1st season or what.

He still is not a nice guy but he has not personally killed anybody for quite awhile.

I caught EB Got Left Out last week(my first episode) and am hooked, though I''m not about to subscribe to HBO. I''ll look for it on DVD, though. I loved the dialogue.

If you''ve just watched the first season, you''ve got to find someone who has the comcast ""on demand"" service. The HBO ""on demand"" section has all the episodes that have aired so far in the current season just waiting to watch for free anytime (if they have HBO). Each week I get so into the latest episode that I wind up rewatching the whole season again.

It''s about damn time that Swearingen does something really despicable again. He''s becoming almost likable, especially since Bullock has been knocked off his high horse. I loved the meeting with Alma, though.

The thing about Swearengen is that he''s in it for himself and his crew.

He is not a ""bad guy"" or a ""good guy,"" he''s just a survivor by any means necessary. But he doesn''t want to just survive - he wants to thrive.

A lot of the characters in this season are similar in that regard. They''re all here to prosper, and in the end they''re all left with doing some reprehensible things to accomplish that. In the same vein, they have occasional bouts of conscience.

In the course of a few episodes, Bullock and Swearengen went from fighting it out one-on-one and beating the hell out of each other to creating a de facto alliance against outsider governmental and company types trying to muscle in and take their piece of the pie out of the camp.

He is not a ""bad guy""

Well, he did have that swedish family killed, stabed one of the guys responsible in his office, had the husband killed, tried to kill the daughter, drowned the addict in the tub and fed numerous other people to the pigs.

I''d call that bad. All that was in season 1 though.

Following up on karmajay, I can''t comment on any episodes besides ""EB Got Left Out"", but ""by any means"" and ""[not] just survive[, but] thrive"" kinda edges him over towards bad. I don''t know about all that stuff karmajay cited, but he''s definitely a darker shade of grey.

He didn''t have the Swedish family killed. The people who occasionally worked for him did. A conversation between Danny and him had them guessing correctly who was responsible, since they recognized the work. He stabbed the guy responsible since killing the child was not a feasible option in preventing word spreading that the murderers were under his employ.

He killed the husband after the husband threatened to use the Pinkertons - people that he absolutely hates (or fears?) for some unknown reason.

The addict was killed because they f*cked with Wu and stole his shipment of dope (and I believe killed one of his men), and he gave Wu his due.

Yet at the same time he tries to help the newspaper guy, publicly hates on Jewel (the ""gimp"") to mask the fact that he tries to take care of her to make up for his sister with the same condition, and works with Bullock in trying to keep the gangsters from outside camp from running in and wreaking havoc.

Yeah Swearengen as far as I can tell is the anti hero of the series. He isn''t clean cut, acts like a sun of a Female Doggo, but underneath it all he is a man of his word and takes care of his own. He''s awesome!

Bullock is the white hat of the series. A man of his word and real straight shooter. Thankfully though he has his flaws as well.

The pinkertons and the, mining corporation and the government are the real bad guys. They represent big buisness, the type that doesn''t care who gets killed as long as they get what they want.

Yes they''ve turned Swearengen into a softy this season. In the last episode he comforted three different people and had nice things to say about Bullock. I think his character is popular and much like the Terminator series they make him into a type of good guy. Swearengen is for property rights, which is why he is in an uneasy alliance with Bullock to keep order in the town.
Meanwhile, Bullock is becoming a loose cannon and unstable since he knocked that chicky up.

I love this show!

I can''t help but draw parallels to Bullock and Twenty-Four''s Jack Bauer.

Seth is tough, skilled and does what he needs to do to keep the peace. But he doesn''t apply those same principles to his personal life, which is spiraling out of control.

Unlike Bauer, though, his personal life is starting to spill over into his work as Marshal. I mean, smacking the guy who subsequently f*cks his horse may have been the proper course of action anyway, but his reasons for doing so were completely personal and had nothing to do with that guy.

/agree with lawyerton

All the bad stuff happened last season (with any corrections posted here).

This season, they seem to have taken that ''evil'' edge off of him, because he is a popular character.

Dammit, I can''t find a reseed of Season 2, Episode 1! I don''t want to have to just read a recap!

Guess I''ll have to find someone with Comcast.

I don''t think they took the evil edge off because Swearingen is a popular character, it''s probably more that he''s outside the action in this season and so he doesn''t wind up in those situations. But at the same time he''s suddenly become this nurturing figure to everyone else and so he comes off so differently. Although he definitely doesn''t abuse the whores like he used to, which were always his nastiest scenes.

I''m hoping they''re just lulliing us into liking him so he can turn and do something absolutely horrific.

Still, does anyone else feel like they''ve wandered a little away from the basic workings of the Gem? In the last season it was a big deal anytime something disrupted business. Now they''re always having meetings and the place is empty. I always worry when I see a show go past the turning point when they characters are always free in the middle of the day so they can keep the story going.

I dunno, I think since they had Swearengen laid up the first few episodes with the ""stone"", they have shown him in a puppet-master mode. Observe and Manipulate. Something big is coming involving Wu I think....

On the flipside, I find myself using the word ""c*cksucker"" more, much to the chagrin of my wife.

c*cksUCKAH! SAN FRANCISCO c*cksUCKAH! SWEARGEN! WU!

Oh man. When Swearingen and Wu had their little ""Who?"" ""WU!?"" moment, I about died.

Anyone who plays WoW with me can attest to my more liberal use of the moniker ""c*cksUCKING ALLIANCE!""

So, after the last one, I''m wondering if Jane is going to clean up and partner up with the madam to reopen or if she''s ready for her blaze of glory.

Dammit, I''m hooked, and now I need to see season 1, but I''m not paying $70 for the DVD, that''s just ridiculous.
