A Genie Appears. You Can Get a Sequel to Any Game But...

Pages

A bored and somewhat malevolent genie appears and makes you this offer: it will give you a sequel to any game you pick... but you must pick a genre different from the original.

So if you loved Psychonauts, you can at long last have a sequel... so long as it's not another 3D platformer.

So which game do you pick and which genre do you switch to?

I would pick Full Throttle, then kill the genie before I had to pick a different genre because you can't mess with perfection.

Magicka Fortress 2

My body is ready.

I would pick Starcraft, but have the game style and art styling theme go Borderlands. Nothing silly and humor-related, but stylized and cartoonish. Borderlands-style gameplay focusing on one or two powers with cooldowns should work quite well with unit themes in SC.

TIE Fighter 2.

*mic drop*

I'm assuming TIE Fighter 2 will switch to Fighting Game.

Street Fighter VI as an open-world 3d brawling and exploration game. Think Guacamelee's use of fighting special moves as traversal mechanics, but with the Street Fighter cast.

And in 3d so's the genie doesn't curse me for trying to trick him into a straight-up Guacamelee sequel.

You wouldn't have to go find special moves either. Areas are "unlocked" by the player learning how to use the special moves to move their character. Maybe you unlock characters who have moves that can access new areas, but unlocking character moves is right out.

A new KOTOR as an MMO.

A new Syndicate as a first person shooter.

A new StarCraft as a stealth action game.

I'm here all night, folks.

I want Brutal Legend, but as an open world rpg a la Dragon Age: Inquisition. That would rock.

XCOM (the one by Firaxis, not the Bureau) done as a Mass Effect-style power-based squad shooter. I don't know that I want Psionics to become Biotics, but something flashier and less OP than Mind Control would be nice.

I would take Kotor 3... and for the genre switch, I would pick the XCom engine.

So I would still get somewhat of a story told via cutscenes and in-game play VO but the real meat of the game would be the missions. I actually think XCom Star Wars would work nicely... Star Wars maps (Tattoine, Dagoba, Death Star) + power unlocks for the classes (Jedi, Scoundrel, Mandalorian and Medic)

Since Super Metroid to Metroid Prime worked pretty well, can I just get a Metroid Prime sequel in the 2D Super Metroid style?

Hmm... How bout Knights of the Old Republic space combat sim?

Homeworld as a space combat sim!

Dungeon Fighter Online as a Metroidvania, I think I'm proud of that one.
One that's often been in my mind for years is Wipeout (antigrav racing series) as a vehicular combat game, like Warhawk.
Strike Vector actually comes close now that I think about it.

Arcana Heart 3: Love Max Six Stars!!!!!! as a beat'em up.

Team Fortress 3 The RPG

Brütal Legend 2 as an action RPG (because that's what it should have been).

LA Noire 2 as an FMV hidden object game (because that's what it should have been).

THIEF 2 as an immersive stealth sim (because that's what it should have been).

Tricked that genie pretty good, though I am stuck with this twelve-inch pianist now.

World of Warcraft 2 as an RTS.

Team Fortress 3 as an RTS.
No One Lives Forever as an MMO. 60's Spy Action MMO with players as UNITY Agency Operatives.

Off the top of my head:

1. XCOM 2 as a grand strategy game ala Paradox. Imagine what the Council must be up to in the background - using diplomacy to keep countries in the fight against the aliens, deploying conventional militaries against other countries that have gone rogue, using spies to identify EXALT and alien sympathisers, and when all else fails, deploying XCOM as its magic bullet. Wouldn't that be cool?

2. Blitzball from FFX expanded into an FFT- or XCOM-style turn-based strategy game. I think the basic concept of a team that relies on the synergy between individuals' special abilities is ideal for turn-based games, since the player can micro each team member without worrying about a ticking clock.

3. Bioshock: Infinite 2 as an adventure game. I'm sympathetic to the argument (here's an example) that BI slipped in trying to tell its story using the gun-toting, gory vocabulary of a shooter; an adventure game would offer much more scope to explore the setting and the potential of Vigors.

4. Tomb Raider 2 (the reboot) as a survival game.

Crusader No Remorse. But as an Action RPG

Starcraft as a stealth based platformer. I really would have liked that game.

I know I just started Crusader Kings 2 but I would totally wish for Crusader Kings 3 as an RPG like Dragon Age Inquisition where you're plotting out your moves on the war table and all the intrigue is played out in dialogue trees.

Bioshock as a Final Fantasy Tactics style game for the Vita.

Ditto. I was quite disappointed when they announced that Ghost had been canned.

I'd go the opposite. A turn-based tactical strategy game in the Mass Effect universe. Even better if this is a Garrus-at-C-Sec or Garrus-on-Omega game.

Telltale Games presents No One Lives Forever

Interstate '76 as an rpg.

Final Fantasy XVII as a 2D action-platformer.
