Persona 5

Love the look of the new starter Persona, based apparently on Arsène Lupin.

Well huh. Does this mean I'll finally get the game I've always wanted where you get to summon Ms. Marple by putting a gun to a cats head and screaming PERSONA! into a PlayStation camera?

So much excitement. One thing I was curious about was in the battle at 2:00: your party seems to be fighting Sandman x2 and Pyro Jack. I don't think we've seen battles against persona demons since like Persona 2.

...hopefully with expanded bonus content, if the trend continues.

If the trend continues, you can expect a handheld version 3-4 years from now.

Persona 3 (2006) - Persona 3 Portable (2009)

Persona 4 (2008) - Persona 4 Golden (2012)

I think we're well past the slower release schedule from Atlus. They're clearly more successful now than back in the PS2 era when most people hadn't even heard of Persona.

I'd expect handheld version sooner than that, unless of course there isn't really a Vita anymore.

It would most likely go to iOS/Android if that's the case. Unless Nintendo brings out new hardware by then (which is probably the most likely scenario).

Do you mean a slower release schedule of Persona games specifically? Because the rate of Atlus-developed games has actually slowed since the PS2 era.

I am locking myself away when this game comes out. They've managed to show me that — at least for the "vanilla" versions — they still seem to be committed to making Persona the way it should be.

Is that a more curmudgeonly statement, or hipster? Or both?

Hipmudgeon. Curmipster. Either way, I know they'll fix the annoying aspects of the game in the handheld version down the line

Fix the annoying aspects, and accidentally destroy all the delicate and carefully-constructed symbolism.

See? I told you not to worry about that. I even had a comparison of the various openings for P3/P3Fes vs. P3P and P4 vs. P4G to prove my point.

What's annoying about P4 that was fixed by Golden? (Honest question since I'm playing vanilla P4 and know very little about Golden)

Couldn't name anything in particular, but I'm taking the piss out of Min a bit, since I'm nowhere near as bothered by intricate balance elements.

I think the only real complaint that Persona Purists have about Persona 4 Golden is that the handheld version gives you a boatload of extra time at the end of the game to finish leveling up your social links. It's a convenience feature for people who want to have everything maxed out for the true ending, but more often than not I see players complain about the grind of skipping those last couple months.

Most of the concern about changing the balance of the games comes from Persona 3 to FES to Portable.

There are some other complaints, about how the new intro video and promos really didn't fit the tone of the original game, but it is safe to say I've complained far more about the post-golden deceased equine flagellation that the P4 characters have seen, completely Flanderizing most of them, than Golden itself.

I don't think it much has though. Their console proper releases have slowed down dramatically but they've been killing it on the handheld front. They moved their PS2 production to the 3DS and PSP/Vita as a cost move, I'm sure. There was a space though, from the transition from sixth to seventh generation where not a whole lot was being released by them. Now we're getting a TON of games again.

I'm sure they're planning on milking Persona 5 the way they have with Persona 4 is what I'm attempting to get at. I'd expect some handheld version sooner rather than later.

I'd love to hear what exactly is different between Persona 3 and P3P other than the lack of movement within the world. I started the game recently and I'm really enjoying it.

There's the extra main character with different social links but a similar storyline. It also adds in the feature where you can give direct commands to your teammates which were previously just AI controlled. There are also Rescue Missions included in the dungeons. I'm sure there are a few other things I'm missing.

Insert link to Minarchist Person 3 info dump.

Was it in the Persona 3 thread?

I would totes read that. Not sure I want to go searching for it right now, though.

P3 thread.

One sec and I might edit with the post in question.

EDIT: Here And the discussion continues into the next page of the thread, that's about it.

Yeah, that link he has in that post is a dead link, unfortunately I was hoping to find a better post from him in one of the many threads, but I can't find anything more definitive than:

-P3P includes teammate control
-P3P removes getting tired in Tartarus

Which means it's multitudes easier for maxing out social links (since you can run the whole of Tartarus in one day), and basically taking away any real tension from the combat.

Found it on the wayback machine!

Rereading it now. Really phenomenal article.

Internet archive to the rescue

EDIT: Dammit. Minarch'ausered.

A lot of the animated cut scenes are cut in P3P. Sadly, this includes Orpheus' first summoning. There is a new male choice of elevator attendant. Fusions can be slightly different and there are some changes to how you can fight like manual command, defend, one weapon type only, etc.

You can play as a female mc in P3P. As her you can form social links with all of your party members as well as dating all of the males save Junpei, Tanaka, and the monk (I think?). Because of this Junpei takes magician, Aki takes star, and Shinji takes moon social links. The strength and hermit social links are also new npcs. The female mc response pool also seems a lot more chipper than the male mc. Some events are altered because you are hanging out with the girls and there are new songs.

Unfortunately, playing as a female main character doesn't let you skip the absolutely disgusting Operation Babe Hunt scene.

Ugh that scene's the worst. And P4 Golden adds boob jokes about a character with gender identity issues. I'm more or less of the opinion that P3P is probably the best version of that game if only because of the option to play as the female protagonist but Golden adds a veneer of lazy fan service that sort of cheapens the whole thing for me honestly.

Good lord, does the Persona series have style. I mean really can only think of a few other games that have this good style. But that trailer was practically dripping in it. Blah I never beat any of the personas but I love what they've done. Basically overhauling jrpgs which I've grown tired of.

Crap I'm gonna need to get a ps3 again...wish these came out on pc.

I don't want to get your hopes up too high but with Sega looking to focus more on mobile and PC and the recent trend of more publishers putting JRPGs on PC, I wouldn't be terribly surprised if Atlus starts porting the SMT franchise to PC. I also think SMT would do very well on PC but that's just my opinion.

I'd love Persona 5 on PC. I want the prettier graphics, but I don't want to buy a PS4. I'd also rather be able to play it not on the TV, so I can actually stand a chance of finishing it.

I would be in favor of whatever gets the company more money to keep doing what they do. And I know I have one friend who became interested in the series after I prodded him to watch the anime. He would like to play it, but doesn't have a console.

Not a big fan of the masquerade aesthetic. I don't like how it looks in terms of style and it's a bit too on the nose as a metaphor. Then again, I didn't like the glasses in 4, either. It's kind of hard to beat teenagers shooting themselves in the head when it comes to impact (so to speak).

On the plus side, that cat mascot looks more tolerable than Teddy, and aside from the masks I like just about everything else in that trailer.
