Marvel Media (Spoiler Thread)

What I liked about Spider-Man interacting with the other heroes back in the early days, was that he was a teenager. I think he could bring some youthful, "Holy crap, I'm hanging around Cap and Iron Man," that a lot of the audience would feel if they were in that situation. Cap, Iron Man, Hulk, Widow, Hawkeye, Thor... they're all "grizzled" and seasoned. Spider-Man can prove himself to the older heroes and maybe the older folks can learn a lesson from youth.

You mean like in the recent animated Ultimate Spiderman series?

Also, Toby Spiderman was good, and I still like it. It's just sad that Internet Hive Mind Effect has declared it as bad due to the emo strut on top of an otherwise passable/but flawed third movie.

Okay, here's how it officially shakes down, according to Marvel.

Spiderman will launch on July 28, 2017. That was the release date set for Thor: Ragnarok, so that will bump four months down the road to November 3rd, 2017. That in turn bumps Black Panther from its November '17 release to a July 6th, 2018 release. That was the date reserved for Captain Marvel, so Captain Marvel will instead release November 2nd, 2018. That bumps Inhumans to July, 2019.

So yes, Thor, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Inhumans are getting delayed but only by a few months each.

It'd be interesting to see how far they take Spider-Man's connections to the other characters. He could actually have a plausible reason to be in every movie and TV show at the very least in cameo form.

My big concern with this allowing Marvel to more closely follow the Civil War storyline is that Civil War was a steaming pile of festering dingo crap. The MCU is also very much a non-secret identity sort of world, and keeping a secret identity is so much a part of Spidey's identity. I mean, except for the dingo feces mentioned above.

That's no problem at all, it's been proven you can seamlessly retro fit stuff into earlier movies with nobody noticing.

If they do another Spiderman origin story it will be a tremendous waste. I tend to think they're smarter than that. What's the one Marvel character that anyone off the street can explain his origin and secret identity conflict? Spiderman. What's the one character you can drop in with zero explanation and take off running? Spiderman. If they waste a single frame on Spiderman's backstory, they're doing it wrong.

Good point, which is why I'm betting they'll introduce him out of costume in lead up episodes of Agents of Shield.

They could do opening credits comic page backstory review for Spidey, just like they did with the opening of Spider-Man 2. That's about all anyone needs, a quick primer on which backstory they are using exactly (Gwen or MJ?).

Absolutely.

Agreed.

But after seeing Garfield, Tobey just seems ridiculous in hindsight. Garfield totally nails the wisecracking Spidey vibe.

I hated them before the internet told me to hate them, so do I get a pass or something?

Not that; future stuff. For example, Jessica Jones in the comics went to high school with Peter Parker. Might be too late to add a throw-away line in the Netflix series.

Yup, Ultimate Spider-Man is a lot of fun. Might skew a little too young in the movies, but add 3-5 years. I just want there to be a bit of awe when he gets around Cap.

I'm stoked for this news. My knee-jerk reaction is for Miles, but if Marvel is playing the looooong game, they'll intro Peter (hopefully) in a unique way and keep Miles ready to take over for Peter down the road.

Anyone have ideas how to bring Spidey into the MCU without it seeming gimmicky?

I'd still vote for a Peter (or Miles) in high school Netflix series, but I guess Spidey is a too huge a movie property.

Last night's press release said Peter Parker, I believe. I also get the feeling they're holding on to Miles as a back-up for when the new Spider-Man ages out of the role, similar to how both Winter Soldier and Falcon could become the next Captain America when Chris Evans decides to move on.

You're wrong wrong wrong and you should feel bad.

<--3rd movie hater (such a waste of potential! How could they do that do Venom??)

Spider-Man being in Captain America: Civil War more or less confirmed. Man, I wonder if Chris Evans is starting to feel like he's going to be an afterthought in his own movie.

I think it would be neat if they started seeding Spidy in Agents of SHIELD, Daredevil, and Jessica Jones in brief news clips and such. Wouldn't need an actor or story arch per se... Just establish him in the MCU.

Part of the appeal of the MCU is that supers are rare (at least on Earth). During the Avengers, they seem to have only the four or so to actually recruit for the team. In the comics, you can't swing a dead cat without hitting some superpowered individual. It certainly does sound like things are going to be getting fairly crowded.

Plus I'm really tired of teenagers saving the world.

I'm still wondering what they're going to do with Jessica Jones... part of her career (the Purple Man, Marvel Max time period) was pretty dark... like massive trigger warnings dark.

Be funny if Sony was all you can use spiderman... The superior spiderman

I look forward to what marvel can do with spidey. Still kind of liked the under dog vibe of them doing great things without some of their best characters. Depending on how this all $hakes out maybe they'll get the rest of their stuff back. Would love to see hulk vs wolverine or cap vs wolverine.

There are actually a decent amount of supers based on Agents of SHIELD. Once they started to use their powers publicly and generate a buzz, SHIELD would get wind, swoop in, and either lock them up or assign them a SHIELD babysitter to keep tabs on them. Uncovering that was Rising Tide's mission statement initially.

I'm pretty bumbed about Garfield being out as he was the most redeemable thing about the new movies for me. I would pay extra money to see him thrown in a room with Downey, Ruffalo, and Evans a la the Avengers conference table scene.

I didn't hate Garfield but I also didn't see the second of his spiderman movies. It makes sense though, Sony already wanted him out and Marvel no doubt wants to do their own casting.

I just thought of the perfect way of announcing the new actor: have him appear in the Spider-Verse storyline.

Sony wants to cast someone "much younger" than Andrew Garfield, whom in his late twenties to early thirties was already playing someone much younger than him.

I think I'm from the wrong generation. I have no idea who Miles is, and I did not read the Doc Oc became Spider Man comics (but just hearing about it pissed me off). Heck, I've not read comics since probably the late 80's, but the movies I'm seeing seem to capture the spirit of that generation of comics.

Peter Parker is Spider Man, and any other derivation of this is just wrong. If there is another person with Spider Man powers, let them be Spider Person or Web Warrior or something else. If Peter gets old, he's just an older Spider Man dealing with different life problems. Once he dies of old age, Spider Man is no more.

Once the Marvel movies move into the alternate people for the same superhero realm, they'll most likely lose me.

Ok Plenty of room in here for people who don't like change, as well as the people who are OK with it.

Until I read the rumor about them wanting a younger Peter, I thought there was a golden opportunity to have both of them in the MCU as Peter and Miles currently co-exist in the Ultimate line. I figured an older Peter in the movies and have a TV show starring Miles and his family on ABC. Have Black-ish and Fresh Off the Boat as lead ins, boom! Ratings!
