Marvel Media (Spoiler Thread)

I guess I better start doubling...tripling...quadrupling my exercises if I want to audition for it.

Does this mean that the next Andrew Garfield movie is dead?

Also, Miles Morales trending on twitter.

We can hope! I can't see Marvel doing it after they had such trouble getting Spiderman at all; I can see them replacing Peter Parker in some future movie. I wonder how much of the script they'll have to rewrite?

Spoiler:

(And I hope it doesn't cut into Black Widow's screen time too much; she would fit the same emotional space between Iron Man and Cap.)

I love Spider Man being part of the MCU finally, but I hope that they don't spend another entire movie on his origins. Thankfully if he's appearing in Civil War first that means he'll already exist as a superhero and they probably won't.

I need to read some Ultimate Spider Man sometime so I can see why everyone loves Miles Morales, I'm curious!

Alternately, they can just get this guy to play Spiderman and imply that his earlier films already happened.

While the movies were mostly a hot mess, I kind'of liked Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker. I'm sad he's not able to do what he was doing with good material.

I'm pretty sure we'd all be better off forgetting that those earlier films happened.

This is my nightmare. Please no.

Me too, and I'm not ashamed to admit it.

That said, while I'm elated to hear the news, it does come with two downsides and an upside:

Downsides: I'm hearing that Captain Marvel and Black Panther will be delayed as a result of the 2017 standalone
Upside: Maybe Miles Morales?

I don't care much for the Spider-man reboot, but I've enjoyed Andrew Garfield as both Spider-man and Peter Parker.
I can't stand Tobey Maguire nor his portrayal of Peter Parker. I don't mind him as Spider-man (too much).

Wait, is it not okay to like Spider Man and Spider Man 2 any more? I thought Spider Man 3 was the one everyone objected to.

I thought Spider Man, the Toby Maguire one, was a perfectly fine telling of Spider Man's origin story.

EDIT: Also JK Simmons is a perfect J. Jonah Jameson and I won't hear otherwise.

Sadly, it was always a given that those would be the first to be cut if they decided to cut movies out of the schedule.

I hope they stick with the plan of not doing another origin movie for Spiderman, but if they bump Captain Marvel I'm going to mail them a rotted fish.

I'm of mixed feelings about this. On the one hand, yeah, Spidey is a classic Marvel character and would have originally been in the MCU were it not for Sony retaining film rights to the character.

On the other hand, I feel like the MCU has established its own unique feel, and shoehorning Spiderman into the upcoming Captain America 3 just feels off somehow. I'm concerned it will throw off the balance established between the core MCU cast, and that balance was going to be the heart of the conflict.

I wish they would have waited to insert Spidey in after Cap 3, either in a solo film or as a part of Avengers 3.

[edit]And yes, I say all this knowing that Spiderman was a central character in the Civil War storyline in the comics (I was reading the core titles at the time that event went down). I look at the MCU as its own continuity, and the continuity is central to the conflict of Cap 3.

I'm glad to have Spidey in the MCU, it'll add a fresh dimension to the super-hero mix. However, I have a feeling featuring him in Cap 3 will marginalize screen time for Falcon. Steve & Sam are a great team with real chemistry, and I don't want some web head taking up their bromance time.

Spider-man 2 remains one of my favorite movies of all time, Doc Ock was a superb villain.

Absolutely.

I'm not familiar with the industry, but I find it super interesting (I'm trying to cut back from hyperbole like "awesome", "brilliant" and "amazing") how much planning has come into the MCU. They're pushing chess pieces with 2 and 3 years of anticipation.

I have read that part of the reason for the planning and fast pace is the actors' contracts. Some of them are apparently locked in for a certain number of years at a particular salary. The wild success of the MCU has pushed up the amount of money many of these actors are worth so they want to get as many movies done as they can in the next few years.

What I liked about Spider-Man interacting with the other heroes back in the early days, was that he was a teenager. I think he could bring some youthful, "Holy crap, I'm hanging around Cap and Iron Man," that a lot of the audience would feel if they were in that situation. Cap, Iron Man, Hulk, Widow, Hawkeye, Thor... they're all "grizzled" and seasoned. Spider-Man can prove himself to the older heroes and maybe the older folks can learn a lesson from youth.

This could also be a way to bring Spider-Man's game up. Make him mature some, and expose him to bigger threats that don't revolve around an Oscorp wild animals/insects lab experiment gone wrong.

That wouldn't really work with the Toby McGuire/Andrew Garfield Spideys, but it totally would if they brought in Miles Morales.

There was an article some years back, (Wired I think, I'll look it up) about how the MCU was planned out way before 2008's Iron Man was even filmed. I think the focus was about branding and product placement; how Disney wooed brands like Audi. What I found interesting was how Disney had thought of so many pieces moving separately but working together: Audi was not going to be a MCU sponsor, Audi was going to be associated with Tony Stark and Iron Man because that was the demographic Audi wanted to aim at 6 years ago.

I'm enjoying the casting arm's race between Disney/Marvel and Warner/DC, but it's the business model and the side negotiations that have me thrilled.

Don't be surprised if everything Peter Parker (or Morales) is Sony's Walkman, Vaio, PlayStation, Bravia's and Xperias.
Maybe he'll stop searching the internet's using Bing.

[edit] found Wired's article.

I think Garfield could do it, but all of the talk is he's out. That was the rumor before this announcement, if the Sony/Marvel thing happened.

Great article. After seeing all the EPCOT references in Iron Man 2 I'm not surprised to see Kevin Feige wearing that great EPCOT hat.

They're recasting the character so no more Garfield, and they've also said it's Peter Parker, not Miles.

We all know Spider-Man's origin story. Please. No more.

MilkmanDanimal wrote:

If they follow the old Civil War plotline, they're skipping straight to "I'm Peter Parker and I've been Spider-Man since I was fifteen. Any questions?"

Thinking about it some more, the strength of the MCU has been that they've taken the characters who are a solid part of Marvel lore but don't have the name recognition and made them household names. (Guardians of the Galaxy, anyone?)

If they do another Spiderman origin story it will be a tremendous waste. I tend to think they're smarter than that. What's the one Marvel character that anyone off the street can explain his origin and secret identity conflict? Spiderman. What's the one character you can drop in with zero explanation and take off running? Spiderman. If they waste a single frame on Spiderman's backstory, they're doing it wrong.

A talking cat, I don't know. Well his fur has the right color pattern.

Bump meaning cancel or bump meaning delay? I can see Marvel taking advantage of the extra time to make delayed movies better, which is better for everyone in the long run.

Just a pushed back timeline right now, as Thor 3 was supposed to open the same weekend as the new Spiderman movie, originally... which always struck me as Sony basically trying to commit seppuku via movie release.
