H1Z1: Catch-All

With the recent patching, any change in the general opinion on whether this is worth buying into at $19.99? If I did pick this up I'd likely only be hopping in every now and then when we had a GWJ group planning to meet up and go out. With the old Day Z mod I would only play for an hour or so before turning it off in disgust at the hackers and general griefing of other players.

If you need to buy food to feed your starving family then I wouldn't spend the $20 on it. I've only had the one hacker experience but I haven't played a ton. I enjoy the game but it's still very raw. If you have other things to play you might want to wait for the F2P version but so far it's been a blast.

It's still an alpha so anything patched can change many times before release. Other than that I agree with Bigred.

Side note, but I'm hoping the company's break from Sony (they are now operating as an independent firm, Daybreak Game Company) may bring with it a reassessment of the F2P model.

I suspect they will at least consider ditching F2P, keeping it a purchase title, and just keeping the cosmetic microtransaction purchases.

The game is a top 10 seller on Steam. I think they will have a hard time finding microtransactions to replace that revenue with that won't draw the community's ire, the way the airdrops did at launch.

$20 + cosmetic microtransactions isn't a bad way for them to go. I'd bet that, given the massive shift in the company and their newfound independence, there will at least be some discussion about whether or not to stick to the current planned course for monetizing H1Z1. Especially given the Steam sales, which I have to believe were stronger than they anticipated.

Decided to pick this up the other night as my first foray into a multiplayer survival game.

Battle Royale is amazing! I had watched videos of people playing the ARMA version and wow was that fun. I only played one match but survived into the top 10 as it narrowed down to a really small area on top of a mountain ridge. Eventually died but it was really fun. It's a brilliant game mode and solves a lot of problems I have with single elimination multiplayer games. Haven't had this fun with an online shooter since Ghost Recon.

Did a few spawns on a PvP server and had some fun. Died a bunch at the hands of zombies, dogs and other players. Made a temporary alliance last night which was cool. Haven't bothered with voice chat and I'm not sure I will, but I'm impressed at how many people do. Had a good run last night but the game eventually crashed. Still, I see the appeal and it's just fun to mess around with.

I'll be really interesting to see how the game progresses and improves. I'd love to see non-aggressive wildlife in Battle Royale. Was that noise another player or a deer? Is the deer running because someone scared it? I feel like that would really up the tension.

I was worried the game would be too stressful for me but I find it oddly relaxing yet exciting. I know I'm going to die, it's just a matter of when. Knowing that I really don't have much invested in the game so I'm happy to just screw around for awhile and see what happens. Surprisingly fun!

You still playing Gazebo? I've got 175 hours in now (my highest total on Steam). It has it's share of problems but man is this game fun with a group (BR is fun even without). Bigred and I play on Misery if you ever want to meet up.

I haven't played in awhile but have been wanting to jump back in, just haven't had the time. Glad to hear your are still enjoying it! Hopefully I'll dive back in before too long and I'll hop on Misery.

I managed to hop into H1Z1 last night with my friends (noteably with @DreadGazebo - which makes me do a double-take at your name every time, Dreaded), and . . .while I'm not generally a fan of Survival games, and my first play of H1Z1 didn't go super-awesome back when it first opened up.

I have to admit I really had fun with it this time!

Recorded my stream of it, so I may have to make a few highlights for YouTubeage.

At $10, I've taken the plunge.

No need to be enabled, but I do need some friends to play with. I'm on the West Coast.

Hit me up!

I'm playing PVE right now. Scavenge(r) server. I think most everyone else plays PVP or battle royal. I plan to hop to pvp at some point but it's too unforgiving right now. I recommend a few hours of pve to learn the mechanics and get your bearings before feeding the pvp wolves.

Yeah. I'd recommend the following:

1) PvE for a few hours to learn the basics of moving around, shooting, crafting, building, etc
2) Normal battle royal. Don't try to win but try to land in Pleasant Valley residential every time, find an AR/shotgun, and run around residential learning how to kill other players, use walls/houses for cover, and so on.
3) Come to PvP and enjoy the exhilarating terror (and fun).

It's pretty demoralizing to come into PvP too early, spend a ton of time hoarding gear, only to be murdered and lose everything. Most encounters are incredibly quick but far in between and do not prepare you adequately. Battle Royal puts you in constant firefights and out maneuvering. It's how I learned to actually kill people in the game.

Oh, and two good resources:

Crafting: http://h1z1.gamepedia.com/Crafting

It was the hacking and the shoot on sight attitude that drove me from pvp. They've gotten a better handle on hacking and griefing though.
Do not use voice chat unless you are in a group of friendlys, it lets them know you are there.
Don't bother asking if someone is friendly or hostile because they always say friendly and turn out to be hostile.
Learn the emotes, saying you are friendly while holding your hands in attack position does not instill confidence.

You have to shoot on sight in PvP unless it's a member of your group (obviously). I spare freshies (newly spawned and unarmed) but otherwise you're going to die if I have the means to kill you. The best way to accumulate ammo is killing another player who has been looting. I learned very early that "friendly" players wait for you to turn your back, pop you in the head, and take your stuff. I don't make that mistake anymore. It's just part of the game.

The biggest advice I can give you to enjoy the game is do not become married to the loot you have. You will lose it over and over and over. Just enjoy the firefights and congratulate someone when they kill you (minus the hackers). There's always more loot to scavenge from buildings and other players.

Edit: I've had a few situations where we've encountered (we being a group of 4-6) a funny solo player and allowed him to tag along. Otherwise, kill on sight or flee is the only way to survive.

Anyone on here still playing H1? If so hit me up on steam, my username is the same as here. I play a lot of BR and a little survival.
