Persona 5

*scowls*

Isn't that the same trailer they showed in Japan a few months, or are they the new Square-Enix where a "new" trailer is the same as the previous one with 5 seconds of different footage?

Yeah, it's the same, which is why I stripped it out. It confirms NA release next year.

30+ hour streaming event on 2/5 to coincide with the Persona concert happening in Japan that day. It sounds like there will probably be some Persona 5 news coming out of it.

Yup, it's a Persona game alright.

It looks like they are advancing the art style of Catherine. That pleases me... that game looked sharp.

Would have liked a female main character but....there is very little in that trailer that doesn't hit all the right buttons for me

Cat burglar who is an actual cat, in a catsuit? I'm ok with this

Yay! Just need a release date now.

God it looks so good

Unrelated, but my copy of PQ should be here tomorrow

I need to get a second TV to hook my PS3 up to, cuz there's no way I'll be able to get the 75 hours of TV time I'll need for this any other way.

You could also get a PS4 and a PS Vita and play the PS4 version on your Vita with Remote Play while someone else is using the TV. Might actually be cheaper than a new TV, too.

$600 to play Persona is too rich for my blood.

Agreed.

Loving the movement also. Adding some new wrinkles there is well needed.

I love the graphical update, and will definitely buy (and probably never finish, in the spirit of Persona 3, 4, and Golden), but they really don't change characters, do they?
In that trailer, you have the male hero from 3, a blond Yosuke, a blond Rise, and a cat version of Teddy...

Kinda sorta, but when I think about the characters in 3 & 4 there were quite a few differences. They intially fit 'type' so to speak, but go in different directions. I think to some extent its a consequence of the SL system - characters start out broad and simplistic by necessity and through gameplay mechanics you discover their nuances. Extending on that thought it makes sense why the SL system is divisive. Sometimes you're locked out of discovering characters' depth simply because you didn't play well enough (not saying YOU didn't play well enough, that's the general 'you').

It looks like they're going with masks instead of glasses or evokers this time around, which is an interesting, and much more literal, take on the philosophical underpinnings of "persona".

And goddamn, do they have the most stylish UIs on the planet or what?

True, I was just commenting on visuals.
And even if Persona 5 is just more Persona, I'm all about that. Particularly with the new visuals.

I think you meant the above?

Basically. They're clearly pulling from the same archetypes as P3/P4 it looks like, but Junpei and Yosuke were not at all alike from what I've seen. I'm expecting the characters to feel familiar but yet distinct in their own ways from previous characters.

But the "blond Yuske"? Totally this game's Magician SL.

EDIT:

I also noticed that they're taking the "emancipation" idea and running with it. It looks like they're sticking with P4's idea of saving people from personal dungeons although this time they're actually prisoners and the team's role is to break them out. Looks like there's going to be an slight emphasis on stealth too.

They do, but the main menu screen looks really busy and hard to read at a glance :\

Does it? I think it looks both stylish and readable.

Certainly something you'd learn very quickly. The loadout screen is a bit busier, but I suspect it'll be easier to read when it's not in Japanese.

But I love, love, love the HP/SP counters and portraits on the combat screen.

I swear there was a menu that was mostly black/white background with black and white text that looked hard to read. Maybe it was just the transition animation?

EDIT: Interesting that there's "Weapon" and "Gun" equipment slots.

The actual weapon select screen, maybe? (at 1:36-1:37).

Here are all the menus. (Because I'm a nerd.)

(Sorry about the flash of characters at the end of that one. Imgur only lets you grab in half-second intervals.)

And if this isn't an all-out attack, I'll eat a hat.

And maximum gif overload!

Ok, it must've been the transition effect that I noticed. Those menus look really nice.

There's no mistaking that for an all-out attack

Youtube compression ftw!

My god, it's full of awesome. Can't wait. Is this supposed to come out by the end of this year in NA or are we looking at a 2016 situation?

Atlus USA still has it listed on their site for 2015. However, they only have the PS3 version listed, so there's a possibility that the PS4 version won't arrive until 2016.

Yes! If there's one word that comes to mind after watching that whole trailer, it is most definitely "style".

I'm not sure what I was expecting P5 to look like, but whatever it was, this looks better. Can't wait!

I really hope the localization is being done simultaneously with whatever development work remains. Dancing All Night comes out in late June (in Japan, not sure if a NA release date has been announced yet) and the first print-run is coming with a blu-ray disc with some "exclusive" preview videos of P5. So that would suggest that the absolute earliest release this game gets is July in Japan. Which most likely means a late (November?) 2015 release for NA.

If Persona 4 is any indication (which it probably isn't):

JP July 10, 2008
NA December 9, 2008

Jesus, took 'em long enough to get to P5! I suppose it's not outrageous to hope for this year. I will wait till the PS4 version because everything will be so much snappier and crisper, plus I only want to buy it once. I suspect they'll actually do a simultaneous PS4/PS3 release, but we'll see. It may end up taking longer for the PS4 version as Clock mentioned.
