H1Z1: Catch-All

I'm on Blackout with a regular group of 5 or 6 players per night. We usually do pretty well, and when we don't, we tend to fail hilariously. I have not tried BR yet.

I'd like to join in. I really want to be on the 6 player team for once instead of the "please don't kill me you big strong men" solo or dual group.

Spoiler:

The big strong men always kill us

Sounds good. I'll make my next character on Blackout.

I'll also make one there.

Anybody up for some fun tonight? Send out a few friend invites. I'll hop on shortly.

I created a character on Blackout called BigredGWJ. Anyone have a teamspeak or anything like that? Would love to meet up with some of you guys.

I had a funny experience on blackout yesterday.

I was approaching the church south of Cranberry on the far Southeast side of the map when I saw a player there. I did the usual "friendly, friendly, let's be best friends and I'm cool if you're cool" callout but this guy was clearly sketchy. Kept circling me with a bow and asking me where I got my helmet and who I killed for it and if he had seen me before. Anyway, he says friendly and then shoots me with an arrow. I yell the usual expletives and tell him we could have been friends and I'm going home. He chases me south of the Church for a good 2-3 minutes and hits me once or twice more with an arrow and I'm down to 26 health. I finally say screw it and hide behind a tree, pull out my hatchet, and begin to evade bow shots while sneaking in hatchet slashes on the guy. This is all while yelling out "we could have been friends!" Finally, I hack him 3 or 4 times and he retreats to regroup. I hide behind a few large trees at an angle where this guy will have to approach to get in another shot. Pull out my bow which he won't expect because I haven't used it yet, knock the arrow, and wait. He comes running in, I release, and BAM...he's dead. Mock him the entire time I'm looting him.

Then 2 guys who clearly heard us yelling at each other show up with shotguns and easily kill me. Fun times.

I had similar experience telling a guy it "didn't have to be this way" as I beat him to death with a branch.
I haven't met a single "friendly" person on the server. Even if they say they are they still end up attacking you. I was killed twice within minutes of even spawning in and obviously had nothing of value to even take.
I've always loved pvp but I have to admit that senseless killing kinda irks me.
My toon is named PastorGrimGWJ

So what I'm seeing here is that if I ever play this game I need to have a buddy with a shotgun.

We had a productive night last night, no friendly deaths that resulted in lost gear, picked up a ton of ammo, and even did my first 'worn note' quest. Also met up with BigRed and introduced him to the wonders of a large group. At one point we were 7 guys. Alas, the Pleasant Valley Gods are fickle, we will probably get slaughtered the next time we play.

That was a blast! I hated to sound like a broken record on teamspeak but I couldn't get over how different and fun this game is with a group. When we took over the church we had guys looking out the upstairs window reporting outside activity while a few of us watched the door. Then if the upstairs snipers wounded enemies that were too close to view from upstairs, a team of us would run out to finish the job. The one team casualty we did incur was when a group of 3 or 4 attacked the church with guns blazing and twobears decided it was a good idea to run out in the middle of it. We easily picked off the group from the windows and were able to preserve his loot since he died right by the front door.

Much more fun than sneaking around and looting small houses jumping in fear every time you hear a noise or voice.

What did you guys find on the worn note quest?

bigred wrote:

New shotgun, camo military backpack, compass, and ammo.

After you logged we went into Cranberry and had a few more encounters, nothing major. We did run into one of the local hackers who we have formed an uneasy truce with. We all disagree with what he's doing but he's always very passive and seems ok. We even discussed the possibility that he is a dev. We run into him enough that being his friend makes our lives much easier. It is still unnerving to see him take off into the sky at 100mph disappearing and reappearing randomly.

I am LegionGWJ on Blackout.

I met a friendly on the server. He said he was scared and wanted to run with me. I expected a trap so I kept my head on a swivel for that first hit, but after a few opportunities for him went unexploited, I trusted him.

As we're looting, some guy jumped him, and the chase was on. We ran around a neighborhood until we were able to out him down.

Then 2 guys who clearly heard us yelling at each other show up with shotguns and easily kill us.

Sounds like a lot of fun if I can ever get my Teamspeak to work on that server. I can connect to a few servers, but some (including the one Baba&co are on) just make my teamspeak client disappear without a trace. I'm working with a mod on the Teamspeak forum to see if he can figure out my issue. Without friends, this game is a non-starter for me.

Yeah, you need teamspeak. In-game voice just announces your presence to the world.

I might be a bit of a filthy skimmer, but I don't know if I saw this mentioned: how easily can you meet up with friends in-game? Do you need to have spawned near each other or do you have ways to make sure you are near friends? I've always wanted to try out a survival game and this looks interesting, but I feel like it would be most enjoyable working with friends.

Here's a random question: do you think this genre would appeal to someone who enjoys roguelites? Is there any real progression or is it just a test to see how long you can go before dying?

You do not control your spawn. Traversing the map to meet up with people is definitely a part of the game.

It's not uncommon for people who are freshly spawning in to force a new spawn in an attempt to spawn in somewhere closer and cut down on travel time. This only applies to a fresh spawn, of course, as you won't do this when you're geared up.

The rogue-lite nature of DayZ was a big reason the game attracted my interest to begin with. It's not quite the same as a roguelike game in that there isn't a strictly defined progression, but for the kind of gamers who like the consequences of death = starting over (and the tension that fact applies to encounters), survival games definitely strike a similar chord as roguelikes/rogue-lites. There is certainly a parallel between a good long "life" in a survival game and a deep "run" in a roguelike/lite.

Battle Royale also feels a bit like a lunch-break roguelike. The progression there is more defined, as there is a definite endgame: being the last man standing. And one takes some satisfaction in how far they make it (eg. top 50, top 30, etc)

Is there a private Teamspeak server we're using to talk? Maybe post the details to the Steam group.

This proved to be accurate. Complete wipe last night of all who were online. We lost so much gear. I was truly depressed for a few minutes until I read that a complete server wipe was coming this week.

Sigh. Guy from police station roof sniped me in the head. I had my hunter rifle scoped in looking for any movement. His head peaked out for the slightest of seconds and then I was dead. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt but the video you sent me of some dude hacking yesterday now makes me doubtful of amazing shots. I just don't want to believe someone is that much better than me!

I'm really, really bad with the hunter rifle and generally at this game. Need to get better.

Pleasant Valley is rough. I've yet to make past the city limits. The warehouses outside of town are good for supplies though.

Yeah. We had it setup where 3 of us were on the hill overlooking the police station roof (2 with hunter rifles and one with a bow/melee to watch for zed and randos). We had cleared the roof except for one guy who was hiding by the door. The remaining 5 were running around the perimeter of the station engaging in close quarter firefights. I was convinced we had the guy on roof pinned down or he was dead when suddenly a flash of a red helmet and I'm dead. I had a helmet and full health too. Sigh.

My favorite kill has been with a thrown spear, so gruesome.

The guy on the roof died real good. It was the three that came ten minutes later that ended us. We stayed too long. Getting into the station, looting it and the guy should have been good enough. We were greedy.

Server wipe coming "this week" according to Smedley.

So, if you've got guns, time to run out and use them.

Edit: Sorry, wasn't Smedley, but one of the devs.

Last night was disappointing. We had looted most of the Northeast side of the map and due to the upcoming server wipe were in the mood for a Pleasant Valley death raid. 8 of us were geared up and camping in a store watching exits on the northern side of the town waiting for one member to come back from a brief AFK. Suddenly some hacker appears in the middle of the store and murders everyone. I hope H1Z1 can work to remove these types of experiences but I realize they are a part of the game.

They're usually pretty good about getting a handle on hackers. It's good to see it now during the alpha so they can plug those holes.

If you guys want/need a TeamSpeak server - I volunteer mine. It's simply hosted at WolfStar76.com for the server address. No password or anything.

I'll make an H1Z1 channel on there (if my friends haven't already done so), and you lot can use it to your heart's content.

Patch in progress for next 4 hours with a full server wipe

Servers will come down at 7AM for approximately 4 hours.
This will include a full server wipe and only allow for one character per server after the patch.
Release Notes
Sitting will cancel auto-run.
Fixed a bug where players can interrupt equip actions too quickly.
Fixed an issue where ammo count could become incorrect if you interrupt a reload action.
Objects making noise above or below you in a multi-story building will now be properly attenuated.
Added slight zoom to all guns and bows in Iron Sight mode.
Lowered sway on .308 rifle while in scoped mode.
Fixed an issue with hydration burning too fast when stamina was full.
Fixed a bug that would occasionally cause oddities on SLI setups
Dropping an item from a world container places it at the players feet instead of the world container origin. The latter would hide it in the world container model.
Vehicle stability adjustments – angular damping, moment of inertia, center of mass, tire friction and steering range tuning on the OffRoader, PickupTruck and PoliceCar.
Working on getting the vehicles to be more stable and less likely to abruptly roll or flip (this will still be possible on rocks, rough terrain, and player placed objects) but trying to make them more fun and survivable.
Fixed /respawn on PvE servers.
Fixed self-damage on PvE servers; the players may be the source of damage to themselves without mitigation.
Made players names reusable across servers. Names on each server must still be unique.
Battle Royale: Cleaned up gas after matches.
Battle Royale: gas damage reduced.
Fixed certain points of interest not getting reported when players entered.
Limited players to one character per server.
