This Old #%&@*$ House

Oh, the staples. So many staples. I think our previous owner's hit the Jack Daniels, then grabbed the staple gun to our carpet down.

Oh yeah. Many spots were just clusters of about 10 staples all on top of each other. Why?!?

Yikes, brings back memories of when I had my floors done a couple of years ago. Removed the carpet to find thousands of staples in the wood floor. Took days of crawling around to remove them all.

The staircase is the only thing in my house still carpeted. It has wood floors underneath which I hope to expose and finish one day but I keep putting it off when I think about the mess from all the sanding required.

Watch out with hardwood stairs. If you're the kind to go around in socks during the winter, those things may as well be coated in ice.

Yeah, it's a little like that on our basement stairs which are pine hardwood, but nothing is as bad as the laminate we have in the basement. It's like laminate is waxed or something. Although it is funny watching the cats lose their footing while running across it.

Our younger dog is constantly sliding around on the hardwood floors upstairs. I laugh at him all the time. I'm guessing the older dog has always had similar problems, but she usually just walks everywhere, while the younger dog always thinks he's missing something, and has to run at top speed so he can see what's up.

The day before closing, my real estate agent called me up and asked if I wanted the good news or the bad news first. I said "good". He responded "the good news is that you don't own the place yet".

Crap.

Turns out that the folks installing the fridge managed to get it to the top of the stairs before dropping it.

Dropping it.

Dropping my stainless steel, counter depth refrigerator.

Dropping it down my stairs.

Dropping it down my custom curved, hardwood stairs.

The fridge was totaled, of course, and the damage on the stairs was considerable. They wrote in a rider to make sure that all of that would be repaired after closing. The last thing I wanted was to have to do a double move considering I am due out of my apartment by the end of the week.

On the day of the signing, the listing agent informed me that the electric range/oven somehow didn't make it off the loading dock in High Point, NC, so I will be without one for a day or two.

The day we moved in, the cable guy informed us that the cable access point was jammed and we would need to get an electrician to get a new cable pull up to the faceplate.

Yesterday, when the folks came to install the range, they nearly dropped that and put a nice sized dent in the drywall.

When they actually did install the range, they left a 2" gap behind it which means I couldn't open my dishwasher.

Oh, and no one vacuumed so I had to run the Dyson over the entire house. Twice. And empty the canister 5 times.

There is not enough weed in the world.

My brother in law and his wife moved into their new house on Saturday. Well, we moved them in, and she managed to lift very few boxes, and stayed inside the whole time. The temps were in the single digits, it was very windy, they live on a hill, and the steep driveway was pretty slick. It was not a super fun moving experience.

Yesterday, in the middle of getting a foot of snow, they figured out their furnace wasn't working, and they had no heat. I say that's karma.

Paleocon that sounds like a nightmare.

Dear lord, Paleocon. And Chaz, yes that was indeed Karma.

I blame the realtor.

Yep. Asked my Mom about it(she's a realtor) and the first thing she said was that not going to settlement would have been her advice.

On the bright side, it can only get better from here Paleocon! And no more stories about house nightmares please, my wife and I are closing on a house in 5 weeks and 6 days. It's not like I'm counting though!

Paleo, when are you having me over to drink whiskey and watch Justified?

Justified is on in like 45 min.

And only 9 episodes left, so it's gotta be soon.

As someone who's been pulling up stapled carpet pad for much of last weekend, and as someone who has previously removed carpet pad that was glued instead of stapled...when I saw there were staples on the floor instead of glue I felt like I'd won the lottery. Seriously.

In other news, flooring is going down okay. Have one spot I haven't figured out how to solve yet where the floor drops over an inch in 3' of run (ya rly), but otherwise I'm nearly done. Countertops go in Friday, assuming they approve the cabinet reinforcements I spent this evening doing (fingers crossed), then we can PLUMB THE M$#&*%FU$&*#ING SINK and maybe finally not wash dishes in the bathtub anymore. Which might be exciting.

Just a bit.

remember what I said about the cable plate?

Anyway. The folks came in and took care of the stove today and reinstalled the railing. The painters come in tomorrow to fix the wall. Hopefully, the floor folks will be in shortly thereafter to take care of the landings on the stairs. I keep joking that the appliance folks have got to be a crew of double wrist amputees.

So yes, come over this weekend and we will drink of the whiskey.

Oh, and if you still have episodes 1-3 on your DVD, I haven't seen them.

Bah, you should've said so sooner, I've already erased them.

Minarchist, a million staples sounds better than glue.

I have magicked the first 2 into your network folder. 3rd may appear in good time.

Are Yellek and Quintin using GWJ to chat when they're in the same house? I hope so. For some reason I always find people using forums for easy communication amusing.

We put the cribs in place in the nursery last weekend. They're just barely short enough to fit side by side against the back wall. And by barely, I mean that their legs on the headboard and footboard are actually sitting on the quarterround in front of the baseboards.

We measured, and figured we had about 2 inches to spare. So why the trouble? The room is out of square by NINE INCHES over ten feet. I mean, I know it's an old (original build 1912) house and everything, but that's ridiculous.

Haha. Kinda, since he had gone to bed already. But I also posted that for Paleocon so 2 birds with one stone and all that.

Anywho. Let me know when a local S&T at Casa Paleocon is convenient for all.

Turned out that the snow was the problem. They figured out that the intake for their forced hot air heating was on the roof, and had been totally buried under all that snow. He had to get on a ladder and use a roof rake to clear it off. Putting the intake on the roof on a house at the foot of the White Mountains was a brilliant move.

Me too! You should probably start a thread for it.

I think I could drive 90 min to see you people.

What do you mean "you people"?

He was probably referencing QStone.
