Heck, what sort of weirdo parallel universe has that many sporks?!

Huh, I hadn't considered this. Playing on PS4 should eliminate the motion sickness too, since the screen is so far away. I can't aim worth a damn with a controller though.

Aim shouldn't be that big of an issue since most weapons have a decent sized swing radius. I haven't used guns yet though but it seems like they won't be used to often, atleast where I am now. I found a rifle but I haven't used it since any noise makes things so much worse.

I will be up for some Co-op Friday night, if anyone wants to join up? I am central time zone and would probably be looking around 8p or so.

Quoting myself in case anyone is looking for some co-op tonight!

Japan. It's a country filled with sporks.

Ugh, I need a new game and half of my friends list seems to be permanently in this game. But it's listed at $72 in the Australian steam store, which is too rich for my blood. Is it any cheaper in the US store?

Edit: found a link that compares prices, it says $60. Tempting.

I just bought this on an impulse I hope it's good. the reviews have been pretty decent I really need to develop better spending habits when it comes to gaming

You obviously haven't been to KFC UK then! It's the best!

It's good, you are in for some fun!

I've been trying to play on Xbox one but the kid makes it difficult lately. I have done 3 sessions and have gotten 0% in the story. It seems very much like dead island without some of the goofiness.

Early gameplay tips, if anyone's interested:

- Fight your instincts, don't hoard. *Much*. Not doing it at all is impossible, I get that, but try to use things you pick up as you see opportunities for it. You'll find a lot of materials in your freerunning travels (if you're a compulsive looter like I am), so don't be afraid that anything's sacred. It really isn't. New weapons are around every corner, make what you have now better so you can get the new stuff faster.

- Don't be afraid to take leaps of faith. You might die, but more often than not, you'll make a sweet ledge grab, and you'll learn more about the limits of what you can do. Later in the game, you'll get skills and tools that let you pull some insane moves and somehow live, so get used to it now.

- Don't dismantle weapons. Sell, sell, sell. The only thing you'll ever get is metal parts, and those are *everywhere*. Money is way more useful.

- It's slow going at first, but once you get to Agility level 5 and unlock Adept, you become much faster. And it only gets better from there.

- I don't remember it being mentioned in the game, but jumping and then attacking is a different move (not the skill you can unlock later in the game), and I'm 95% sure it does more damage. It also gives you Agility points, with bonuses the further you fall. Even if it had no extra effect at all, I think I'd still do it, because jumping from a building and smacking a zombie in the head with an overhead swing is really satisfying.

Well so far I am enjoying this game if anyone is up for some coop my Xbox live gamertag is the same as my name here it will probably be hard today though because of the super bowl

I picked this up on Friday from Amazon (Steam copy).

So far I am enjoying it, its looks great and I have not encountered any performance issues.

I had a moment last night where I was doing a mission and was about to leave a building, I always leave the doors open as I dont want to get trapped.

Just as I got to the door one of those fast zombies came running through it, I kid you not, I jumped and must of cleared about 3 inches off my chair.

I am enjoying it, but I really dont want to have to go outside..its just too damn scary...

Having a blast with the game!

Bedurndurn joined up with me on Friday night, since I had left my "friends only" option open. I didn't hear him come into the game and it caused me to jump back and take a swing at his avatar, since I was in a particularly hazardous area with 100+ biters roaming around. Laars joined me last night, just to spectate (Sorry about the occasional pauses in game, they still have cpu issues that need to be ironed out, though it has gotten better).

I am about to move the main story along and go on a night mission (/nervous laughter) that involves me chasing down some Bolters that are in the protection of some Volatiles.

If interested in some co-op, my Steam info is in my sig.

Tonight I had a purple weapon that was upgraded with 3 upgrades disappear... I moved it from my hand to my backpack and it's gone. ugh

I bought this on impulse last week since I apparently need to immediately start a PS4 pile. Finally had a chance to get in a few hours yesterday while Disco and PvtDomano were away. I had a pretty decent time, although I imagine I'm still in the tutorial portion of the game.

I've only survived through one night sequence, and it was surprisingly tense. During the day I mostly ignored all of the zombies and pretty much sprinted/climbed wherever I needed to go. Once night hit and I had to make my way back to a safe house, I became VERY aware of being surrounded by zombies everywhere I went. At one point just to see if I could, I ran into a group of zombies to alert them, and then went into Extreme Parkour Mode, hopping onto a car, then onto a van, ultimately climbing my way to a roof with the zombies gurgling and screaming all around me.

Of course, I jumped to the one freaking roof that had no other buildings/ledges near it. And I had just made myself a target It was more than a little disconcerting to be surrounded by zombies with no clear idea how to escape. Ultimately I just sprinted off the edge, jumped behind the group, and continued to sprint away. I barely made it back to the safe house after a few ill timed jumps had me miss the fence and fall directly on some zombies.

It's strange, because this is very much a Dead Island game, and I played the crap out of that. It might be a combination of adding in the night mechanic in addition to having a large break from Dead Island, but I enjoyed my first session with the game and will continue to play. I can see the game becoming a bit of a slog if I just end up doing the same thing (get to Point A, evade zombies, press X to flip a switch/gate/whatever), but so far it's been exciting.

Did you get a chance to tangle with Volatile's yet? They are fun, especially when you have 3 right on your rear end and you are out of UV flares and your UV flashlight is running low on juice.

Thank the elder gods for traps!

Not yet--I just got to the point where you see one. Didn't actually run into one yet. I don't think, anyway. Unless they were chasing me. I basically paid no attention to anything around me other than getting to the next point on the map.

I don't know if it's the artificial ability boundaries or if I'm just getting too old to enjoy fast twitch games like this, but I've had a hard time finding any sort of groove in this game. My reactions seem slow, I can't aim right, I die quite a bit, and I'm often confused about where I am and where I'm going. That last is mostly true IRL, but it applies to the game as well

So is this something that gets better as you progress? Are my reflexes just finally starting to deteriorate enough that I should put down the FPS stuff and stick with...I dunno...backgammon or checkers?

I finished the game yesterday on PC, and I just can't understand how I would've played this with a controller. Same with Mirror's Edge. Looking around felt like it was key for moving smoothly, and there's no way to be as accurate with an analog stick. At least for me.

The only thing that improves mechanically is the speed with which you're able to climb or mantle. Also being able to fall from greater heights definitely helps. Learning how the geometry works with the movement is another thing you'll get into as you keep playing.

bighoppa wrote:

Spatially? I had to fight the urge to want smooth parkour movement from minute 1, mostly because you're not quite fast enough for it (some super spy, can't even run for 20 seconds without gasping for air), in addition to figuring out what the character is capable of within the environment.

So maybe consider slowing down, taking a breath. Experiment. Make small leaps, and then go bigger as you start to feel comfortable. This early in the game, you're not especially rushed, unless you're in alert mode at night.

I usually don't play FPS stuff on console, but I have been slowly sliding away from my PC this generation. Some of it probably has to do with a toddler running around the house wanting to touch everything I'm touching. Playing on my 65" plasma has a lot more to do with it, I'm sure. I was a hardcore K+M player for a long time, so it has been difficult to work with a controller. I think the main hindrance I've had is the friend I am playing with. He goes on and on about the need to keep moving, run all the time, need for speed, blahblahblah. I'll try again and take it slower. Hopefully the game will grow on me a bit.

Yep. As you progress, and the get the ability to improve your movement abilities, DO IT! They are by far, the most imperative to making the game "smoother", so you can become a parkour pro.

I am by no means an expert, but I can get around on the map pretty damn well, and I am still under 60% completion of the main story line, about 40 hours in, but I enjoy doing side quests (even the night ones).

I die a ton in this game, mainly because I believe that this is a "make your own fun" type of game, which means I'm constantly trying to do risky things. I never run down the middle of a bridge when there's a narrow rail I could be skipping atop of, I constantly make leap-of-faith jumps when I get to the edge of a building, and I refuse to simply chop a zombie's head off when there are nearby spikes to jump kick them into. Don't know how many survivor points I've lost, but it's a great many.

Joined Escher in a co-op game, and was very pleased to see that redoing quests that you've already done nets you the XP again. You also get level-appropriate weapons from boxes, regardless of the level of your co-op partner(s). Two great design decisions right there; they've completely removed the two main disincentives that might make you reluctant to play with a newer player.

This game is far more impressive than I expected it to be. Good job Techland. They really followed through with making vast improvements from Dead Island, keeping a good atmosphere and tone to the game, making it tense, fun gameplay, and absolutely visually gorgeous.

The story is dumb and full of boring tropes but whatever it's a video game. I expect story after story where I play tortured soul biggest dick cool guy in the town who gets f*cked around by the benevolent, self-interested "good guys". I've just started skipping through most of the dialog, there have been a few well written characters but mostly mediocre. At least the character dialog isn't a huge joke like Dead Island.

The nighttime sequences are really interesting at first but quickly devolve into sprinting around the vision cones of the nearly blind vampire dudes and just running back to a safe house if you happen to actually get spotted somehow. The safehouses are far too close together, I never really feel like I'm in much danger of getting chased down because I know I'm within 100 feet of a safehouse at any given time. I expected the running away sequences to be longer and more tense but they almost never go longer than a minute. Either they smack your booty enough times to take you down or you get to the nearest safehouse fast enough.

FedoraMcQuaid wrote:

This highlights my favorite totally important but also kind of minor aspect of the game.

You can skip every plot-related sequence. Except the GRE calls, for whatever reason. But they're fairly short, so it's not a big deal.

Don't make your inane garbage unskippable. Unless you can be 100% confident you've just created a masterpiece. Which, huge spoiler incoming, you're making a video game, so you didn't.

(I'd love to play Max Payne 3 again, but five seconds into that thought I remember that it's 60% cutscenes, so I go do something else.)

+1,000,000 for having skippable cutscenes!

Guns are FAR too strong once you get about halfway through the game. The actually power level of the guns themselves is fine, it's good that they are very effective problem solvers but the downside to using them is nearly nothing. The noise they make usually only ends up bringing two or three fast zombies which are easy to take care of. The same issue applies to explosives. I'd like to see loud noises attract hoards of the walkers as well, it would be a good punishment to using loud power because you have to leave the area soon after. It would also create some options to lure zombies to bandits. Ammo is also far too plentiful and easy to get.

The same applies to melee weapons, really. If you get a fast sword and add some upgrades, you'll instantly dismember everything. If you angle things right, you can kill four or five zombies in one swing. The game is just not balanced to be difficult the further in you get.

Might be intentional, though.

The biggest thing about the difficulty is you learn the AI tenancies pretty quickly for both the zombies and the bandits. They are pretty dumb and easy to manipulate. It makes sense for the walker zombies but the bandits are kind of a joke. I've cleared so many airdrops with just 1 molotov on them and they run in a straight line toward you as you point a rifle in their face. The melee combat with them is actually pretty decent as they dodge and block attacks and have their own stamina but they are far too easy to kill in other ways.

Nighttime difficulty is really the biggest disappointment. After the first couple times you learn how to just avoid the vampire dudes super easy. I'm constantly sprinting right past their vision cones and they don't aggro. If you somehow do manage to aggro them there is always a safehouse within 30 seconds or so. If you do try to have some fun and bring them on a long chase they just smack your ass until you die from over chapping. Disappointing that the chase sequences aren't nearly as fun or engaging as the trailers implied.

The dungeons (or quarantine zones and outposts) are really stupid but at least they are completely optional. The fact that you have a radar of all enemies just removes any tension and the rewards for doing them are meaningless.

There are a few disappointing aspects of the game but still I'm mostly impressed by it. I got a grappling hook a couple hours ago and man is that thing fun.
