H1Z1: Catch-All

Thanks for the 7 Days to Die suggestion. I agree that the banditry is a core component, but - the excessiveness keeps me out of a game it sounds I would enjoy.

I'm going to give this a try at launch, though. It's free. So nothing lost, but my virtual sticks and berries.

IIRC the nether (zombie equivalent) in Nether are/were a significant threat, the developers went out of their way to try and encourage team gameplay, and yet it was still full of the types described above. Ultimately I don't think you can have a game with any sort of open pvp and not get those people.

There will always be people out to kill people, and there kind of needs to be, because that's really part of the whole point of the genre. Banditry is a big part of what makes the world dangerous.

The trick is finding the balance. A zombie threat helps give people incentives to work together. The more incentive to work together, the more average players will do it. The deranged will always be the deranged, it's how the world gets the people in the middle to behave that pushes the whole thing one way or another.

While less applicable to survival games like these, in MMOs I always wanted to see some sort of "enforcement" agency.

There are penalties in the real world for murdering people all willy-nilly. Then again, in games like this, robbery isn't really an option - until you've commit murder first, and can now loot/rob a corpse.

In the real world, going on a murderous killing spree gets the cops or the kings men or something else set out after you.

I've seen games try to handle this, to a degree, with bounty boards (which can also be abused to put a price on someone's head when they're innocent) or with assorted reputation systems - that only really seem to matter if you've been killing NPCs.

Ultimately - I'd like to see games like this include ~some~ way to track the true "crazies" in the virtual world. To have a way to identify (perhaps by the blood spatter on their stuff?) that they've been murdering indiscriminently.

Of course, it'd also be nice to role-play it a bit. Set up a fifedom of sorts in H1Z1 with a player-made fortress. Protect those in your area - and hear cases against would-be murders. Organize bands to hunt down such individuals.

Though, I suppose such player interactions are what people hope for in these games, and instead we get wandering murder hobos who get the better stuff and get worse, and nobody puts them in check.

That's actually not strictly true. Plenty of robbery happening in DayZ, especially since shooting people can damage their gear (a bunch of body shots and you'll ruin all their stuff, and have nothing worth taking).

I've heard that taking things off of live people is possible in H1Z1 as well, although I've not gotten close enough to anyone to see the option. But apparently it happens in PvE, where you can't hurt other players but they can't hurt you either, so not much stopping you from running up to them and sticking your hand in their backpack. Though again, I have not seen this, only heard mention of it, not certain it is accurate.

Interesting.

It's worth noting, I'm not actually a fan of this genre (I have played Nether, and mostly liked it for a while, but then they started to patch in a crafting system I felt over-complicated the game - and have never played DayZ. . . ), but I picked up H1Z1 'cuz one of my best friends is a fan of the genre, and I've certainly made him play enough games that it was my turn to try soemthing he was excited about.

So. . . I'm learning.

ArcheAge tried out a justice system in an open world PvP game. On there, if you killed someone of your own faction you would leave behind a blood spot. If another player clicked on the blood spot they could report your crime which would alot a certain amount of infamy points to you. If you died with infamy points you would spawn in the courthouse where a jury of other players would vote innocent or guilty. If you were found guilty you were sent to prison for a certain amount of time, depending on the amount of infamy you had, where you would have to serve out your term in real time. Most sentences were stuff like 15 minutes but others were several hours. And you couldn't just log off for those hours and come back, you had to be logged in for that time. of course you could also try to escape prison but that's another matter. Anyway, after accruing a certain amount of total infamy you would eventually be kicked out of your faction and deemed a pirate so everyone could kill you on sight and knew you were a pirate.

It was by no means a perfect system but it was a try.

In Fallen Earth, at least early on, there was a guild that acted as peace keepers and their main job was to track down other players that were griefing in PvP and lock them down. Of course that relied on having a large guild of players that were into that sort of thing and the other major guilds being okay with it. You still had PvP, you just didn't have open d-baggery. At least not for long until a posse showed up.

Created a private Steam group for us. Figure we might as well, at some point there will be base building and loot stashing that we won't want broadcast to the world. Hit me up here or on Steam for an invite, already invited a couple of you that I've seen on my friends list playing the game.

PS2 is still thriving and is hardly abandoned.
This game, I've had 3 toons starve to death without finding a single item. Supplies are pretty thin and IMO hunger and thirst go a bit too fast.
I've had some pretty cool moments, hiding behind a wall listening to a zombie shuffle around for example. beating a wolf to death with my fists was kind of traumatic.

Could I get an invite to the steam group?

Memorize this plant:

This is the blackberry bush. This is your food and water. They are plentiful. You should never starve. Run through these bushes whenever you see them, mashing the "E" key as you run through them (no need to stop and aim). Each blackberry restores 2% energy and hydration, and it's trivial to gather up 50-100 of them.

Unfortunately, there is no "eat all" menu option, but feeding on berries really doesn't take very long. They take up very little inventory space, so there's basically no reason (at this point in time) for even a completely loot-less character to starve.

At some point, I imagine these may thin out, but for now, these are how you keep food and hunger at bay.

Invite sent.

The URL in your signature's link is not correct, might want to update it to this one.

PS2 has been through at least 2 sets of full server merges, maybe more. It's hardly thriving. Yes, it's correct that it's not abandoned but i'll predict it's dead by the end of this year.

Can I get a Steam group invite as well? I've been playing nightly with a group on Blackout server. It has bugs galore, inconsistent loot spawn, and cheaters, but I've still managed to have a blast each time I've played. It is easily the most intense game I've ever played.

Thanks for this. I've tried checking plants as I traveled around but never have seen an action option.

The other plant you need to learn right away is this one:

IMAGE(http://h1z1k.ru/uploads/posts/2015-01/1421541475_bow-1.jpg)

That's where you get Wood Sticks, which are used for Arrows, as well as the Bow (along with cloth).

You can get a bow and arrows with nothing more than that plant and your starting gear:

I killed a zombie that had 448 berries on him. Alrighty then.

I played Day-z for Arma for about 20 hours so thought I'd buy this and give it a try. Ran around for 5 hours and the only loot I found was a crowbar (murdered quickly after) and rotten meat. I was told the loot system is out of whack after they over-compensated for a plentiful system but this is ridiculous. I'm hoping it gets better as I realize it's early access but this is one of the first games I'm regretting purchasing.

I did two rounds of Battle Royale today.

First round, landed at a campsite with two other guys, the guy that got the pistol first won. (Although it was only a screw-up in my run-around-and-punch-him tactics that let him get a gut shot on me, I was putting some hurtin' on him up to that point).

Second round, I was parachuting into another campsite (or, quite possibly, the same one - my map orientation isn't there yet) and as I was descending, I saw muzzle flashes and heard shots. Quickly swooped my parachute away in the final seconds of descent. Ran into the treeline. Laid prone and watched through my binoculars (fun fact - at the edge of binocular range, people look more like ghosts than people. Like a floating pair of arms and some rough outline around the rest, and no real animation, just gliding). I stayed in that treeline for a very long time, waiting until I was sure the place was empty. Made my approach, and a shotgun and AR15 were still there (which I was counting on - multiple people hit the area at start, but only one survives, and only carries one set of guns away from the site. As long as it's not a group that hits it together). No backpack, which was a bummer, but I was armed.

Stayed out in the forest until the poison gas. Had a hard time reading where the poison gas was closing in from. But as I moved away from the apparent gas approach, someone else armed in the treeline got the drop on me. Firefight ensued, but his first mover advantage won the day.

Looking forward to some more BR.

The loot system has been borked since launch. The only time loot is plentiful is when the servers come back up and then there's so much stuff you can't carry it all. SOE decided to go on a proximity & timer based system for loot respawning and it's not working. Basically, if there is someone within X yards of the respawn, no loot will spawn. There was also a bug that was preventing some loot from respawning. They were trying to eliminate camping but it's failed miserably. Supposedly there's another patch coming today to address the issue.

I'm hoping they get this figured out but it's SOE so who knows.

I gave this a shot, but there are soooo many bugs and issues that I have switched to 7 Days to Die. While it is in alpha stage, it is far more stable and fun than H1Z1.

There is a long way to go until this launches, for sure. I started on a pve server to get a handle on game play. Looking forward to trying pvp though.

Yeah. I should probably mess around on the PvE server. I became way too frustrated starting out on the PvP server yesterday.

It should be more stable, it's been out a *lot* longer. First EA release was December 2013.

I'm very much into both of these games. They're very different, which is good as they will both hold my attention for some time.

I haven't played 7 days or day z so I have nothing to compare it too. I do enjoy the game on it's own merits though and see a lot of potential there. It's an alpha so I planned on immediately regretting doing early access and expected it to be in a much worse state than it is.
Are there particular servers that most of the GWJers are playing on?

Could I get an invite to the goodjer H1z1 group? Now that I'm past my initial hissy fit I'd love to play with a few goodjers and enjoy the game.

Looks like they patched the loot system. Loot everywhere!

Babaganoush enabled me into buying this. Will probably try it out this weekend.

At some point, I'd like to team up with some people for Battle Royale runs.

Would also love if we picked a server for everyone to have at least one of their characters on.

Your description of Battle Royale made it sound like the Hunger Games.

I'm on Blackout with a regular group of 5 or 6 players per night. We usually do pretty well, and when we don't, we tend to fail hilariously. I have not tried BR yet.

Kehama wrote:

That's what it is. Battle Royale is the name of a book (and movie) that was the Hunger Games before the Hunger Games existed (though the HG author insists she wasn't aware of BR before writing HG).

The mod's use of the name is a direct reference to that.
