Kick-Ass: Movie Catch All

Agreed. Some movies just cant be analyzed too deeply. Just enjoy them for what they are.

Nothing can be analyzed too deeply.

But what does it mean!?

Watched it last night, loved it, and now I'm going to get the comic book for it. My wife on the other hand was immediately turned of by everything once Hit Girl showed her true colorful dialog.

I think my single favorite thing about it was that...

Spoiler:

They didn't lightly step around the Origin stories for the heroes & villains. There is something incredibly powerful about the warehouse scene with Big Daddy saying goodbye. You never got that emotional depth when Batman's parents were killed. And I cared more about the Red Mist walking the line between friend & enemy and ultimately becoming a supervillain than I did the entirety of Spiderman 3.

Also, huge potential spoilers from Mark Millar on Kick-Ass 2 here. The non-spoilery stuff is that the new comics are coming in December and filming of the sequel will start in April. I cannot wait to see more of this.

Now I just need to go see Scott Pilgrim and then buy those comics as well. :)

My SO had the exact opposite reaction with Hit Girl. At the last warehouse scene she actually applauded.

I think the key signifier here is whether you think a 12 year-old girl calling a bunch of gang-bangers "c**ts" is shocking or awesome.

I just got this from Netflix and watched it today. I really liked it. I wasn't expecting it to be so dark or so deep. I thought it would be a high school version of Mystery Men but but what I got was a high school Blankman crossed with pre-teen Kill Bill. And, I have to say it was a much better movie because of it.

I, too, Netflixed it, and Holy Jumping Lord of Hosts. I wasn't in tears the whole time, and came out thinking the movie was only "Pretty good" as a whole, but the first scene with Big Daddy and Hit Girl nearly killed me, and while that may have been the funniest joke, the best one was how extra-ordinarily full bore short bus specialest of special ed stupid Kick-Ass and Red Mist looked whaling on each other at the end. I stopped breathing. I wish that scene had been around when the first X-Men was in production. Everyone who takes issue with comic costume modifications needs to see that scene.

And mad props to Nic Cage. I was shocked by how moved I was by the sequence wherein a psychotic little girl murders a passel of goons to get to her daddy.

I finally got around to watching this movie. I'll admit it, I totally cried a bit.
Both from laughing and other totally manly reasons.

That warehouse scene almost got me too

Someone kicked you in the vagina?

Seriously though, I really need to see this movie. There's just not enough hours in a day, or days in the week.

I wish they'd kept the scene from the comic where

Spoiler:

after Kick Ass and Hit Girl kill the main bad guy
Hit Girl asks for a hug because she'd just lost her dad. Now that was a total tear jerker.

I was fully expecting it to happen and was pretty disappointed when it wasn't there.

I think he means finger -> butt?

On topic, I just joined in from page 5 since it would otherwise take over an hour to read through the thread, I'm sure. So if I reiterate anything, apologies.

I found the film to be a really interesting take on the same premise as Watchmen, only focused on a few more specific points and wanting to make people laugh. Whereas Watchmen took a serious look at what sort of people would become super heroes, Kick-Ass examines it slightly differently. What would happen if someone were to take up a costume if they didn't know what they were doing (get their ass kicked, die) or in order to be good at it you'd have to be completely off your rocker (Big Daddy and Hit Girl).

There's also the whole concept of whether you'd actually help someone or would you stand there and watch. I think that was intended to be some of the original commentary early on, and even towards the middle.

Spoiler:

"What kind of kid has a Kick-Ass themed birthday party?" Yeah, the passerby that wouldn't interfere because he was afraid of getting hurt still wound up dead.

It's interesting as usually I can't stand films where "innocents" bite it. For example, in The Lost World when the T-Rex is rampaging through San Francisco (or was it San Diego? I don't even remember) there's a random NPC that almost dives into the safety of a retail store, but JUST BARELY gets nabbed by the T-Rex and dies. To this day I can't watch that without feeling bad for the guy.

Yet for some reason, I don't get none of that from Kick-Ass. Maybe it's because death is usually instantaneous. Maybe it's because only one actual innocent gets killed (aforementioned bystander). Maybe it's because the tone of the film translates the act of killing as being fun in a way that you know is wrong, but you just can't help but smile half the time (though I will confess, the dude in the car almost made me cry foul, except the way Hit Girl said "what a douchebag" made me laugh. Plus, at the very least he was a bad guy).

I dunno. It was a good movie. I plan on grabbing it on DVD.

I'm curious, how is the comic different? More serious? More funny?

Will, it's a Mark Millar comic, so it will invariably be more misogynist, racist, and nihilistic. CHUD has a detailed look.

I really dug the movie as well, but I credit Matthew Vaughn with taking Mark Millar's hooks -- which is the one thing he does have a knack for -- and giving it heart.

I just want to echo everything Alien Love just said: the comic is an ugly, nihilistic one.

A pretty basic tenant of story telling is how things change, internally or externally. The comic
Seems to reject that. Which might be a fair point, if it wasn't delivered with all the grace of
a self centered 15 year old. You don't understand me, man!

Miller pretty much set his stance on life with Wanted. I enjoyed Kick-Ass (comic) more, but not really by much. I much prefer the movie. Hell, I'm a sucker for a happy ending.

Awesome fake movie trailers.

Sometimes I want to read the comic after seeing the film. I did this with Hellboy, which is a very different product from the film but still entertaining. Kinda glad I didn't do this with Kick-Ass. I might enjoy the comic, but it does read to lack a lot of the well done heart that the film has.

I also hope for a sequel, but only because I want to see more of Hit Girl and what she can possibly do with Kick-Ass.

Also: anyone else wonder what the actress's parents thought of their daughter saying "{sexist slur}s", "shows over f*ckers" and killing all those people so happily?

I ordered the comic shortly after seeing the movie without noticing that it was a Mark Millar comic. All I know of Millar is from Ryan Scott's rants on CGW/GFW radio (not a big comics guy) so I was a little disappointed when I saw his name on it. I'm five chapters in and have enjoyed it so far but the have been a number of female characters with absurdly big boobs.

And again:

WOOT!
Looking fun!

It's surreal to see this comment. I don't even remember reading the Kick-Ass comic. Maybe I'm a pod person.

WOOT!
Doubly fun!

I didn't imagine that the 1st movie pulled in enough to justify a sequel.

So in for this. I loved the first movie.

Hrm, not written or directed by Matthew Vaughn's team. Hopefully they'll deviate from the comic in all the right ways like the first movie did.

But holy crap...

Spoiler:

That's Jim Carrey? Jesus, I would not have recognized.

I thought at first it was Mark Hamill. In a couple scenes there was no way it wasn't!

Spoiler:

except it wasnt

That looks ... well, pretty damn awesome. I've watched the first one at least a dozen times. Can't wait.

I really want to see this. But not if it follows the comic too closely.

Chloë Grace Moretz totally made the first movie...and it looks like she'll do the same for this one.

Someone page Legion. She still isn't 18 yet.

Man, if I only had a dollar for every post of mine that I saw later and had no idea what I was talking about nor remembered posting.

Did we ever have a separate topic about the 2nd movie? Can't seem to find it on search.

Just saw it finally, took a chance despite the bad reviews. (Well, rented it free from the library ) Wasn't as good, definitely more gory than the first, but it wasn't as bad as the reviews made it sound.
