Anyone else trying EQ2?

This is semi-relevant:
There is a tweak that can be done for EQ2 (and for WOW and other applications?) for mid to high range graphics card called PCI-latency (affects AGP..) where you reduce the latency on your card from 255 (apparently default for most motherboards with ATI cards) to 128 or even 64.

I''m at work and can not post the link (google it) but that should solve some of the stuttering issues that has plagued the game and it seemed to work pretty well on my X800 card.

(PS can''t remember how I stumbled across this so if I''m stealing someone else post here.. .. I''m maybe sorry .. kinda .. )

Okay, update.

I went back in and played some more last night. The graphics, for some reason unknown to me, were far better. The animation was much smoother, the water looked more normal, etc.

I think there are two reasons:

1. My computer was hiccuping for some reason the night before; or

2. It took me a session to not feel thrown off because it was not exactly the same as WoW.

So anyway, I''m still not sure I''m switching, and I''m still concerned how the game will hold up in the truly high populated areas on my computer, but at least the graphics in the trial are not longer revolting to me.

The game play seems decent enough, although they could have helped themselves by having the trial contain a bit more than ""Kill these 3 guys"" and collection quests. Talk about confirming a stereotype.

Well, the island is meant solely to train individuals who are new to MMO''s. When you buy the game, you can almost immediately skip most of the island if you like.

I''m beebopping along trial island too. It''s a good game. It doesn''t have the distinctive flair that WOW has. But, I do feel the developers are aggressive and want to be competitive.

One of the main things I love about WOW is that it has raised the bar for all games. The remainder will either sink of swim. This is a great time for MMORPGs!

Played some last night with my son Karma - wish I could get that knucklehead to stick with one character if I have to do that starter isle one more time I will scream. Its a good way to spend timw with him and for 7 yrs old he does pretty well. that being said - anyone have a good recommendation for a good duo pairing for HO''s ie Fighter and Cleric or Rogue and Mage - something like that?

Best combo for duo by far from what I have seen is either Cleric/Crusader or Cleric/Warrior.

When I duo with Dahc for example we can easily take on ^^yellows and below. Not bad for a duo and that just really lets us get to places that other duo''s can not.

Now our fights are slow but works great and there is a nice new fighter healer ho that adds a ward and heals which is awesome. THen there is another one that buffs the person that completes the HO, usually the fighter, with a buff that has a chance to slow what ever hits the person.

So really hands down the best duo out there IMHO.

Hmmm thanks for the info - I think he wants to try a warrior so maybe I will do the Cleric thing. Thanks Mal.

Sly what is wrong with the quests? Not bad starter quests and certainly no different than the quests WoW offers other than presentation/wrapper.

I do like the story WoW weaves with a lot of the mundane quests but there are long quests in EQ2 that have a story and have you do different things.

Also if you started a Scout for example you would have gotten a quest to ''sneak into and scout out'' the goblin camp the warriors get a quest to help free the captavie refugees, although I do wish you could escort them back like in WoW, and the mages do get a quest to kill something that can only be hurt by magic.

They do chain these together to form a small story arc but I would agree WoW has a better presentation other than the lack of voice overs.

Nothing terribly wrong with the quest, just that each quest is ""Kill X number of Y,"" with the occassional ""and pick up Z number of widgets."" I understand that these make up the bulk of quests in MMORPGs, but it is also the stereotype for why some find the games boring, so it may have been a good idea to try to mix it up a bit in the trial.

I did not know, however, about the scout differentiation.

Sly here is something else that I found out last night too.

I only played fighter types in EQ2 post 20 but last night my Rogue hit 19 so could do his quest to become a Brigand.

The quest had me intercept and kill an orc messenger and bring the message back to Freeport.

The message revealed a meeting between 2 factions so I had to go to the meeting pretending to be the other side and do what the orcs wanted done.

It wasn''t a big quest really but basically other than killing the orc messenger the rest of the quest was sneaking arround and avoiding stuff instead of killing or collecting stuff. It seemed like a roguish sort of quest to me.

So there are some different types of quests out there but will not lie, killing/collection quest have made up the bulk of the quest types.

I''ve been playing for a couple of days and I have a plethora of quests. I can''t even keep up!

Yeah, you will NEVER run out of quests to do!
