Did I just consider buying a game about dating pidgeons? I think it might be time to walk away for a while.

(Great job, btw)

This has got to be one of the weirdest games I have ever played. Just played through it a few times in preparation for listening to the podcast!! Look forward to hearing other players' experiences, because there seem to be quite a few variations!!

Now that's impressive, recording the spoiler section months before the game even released.

I greatly enjoyed listening to this spoiler section. Great discussion, and I enjoyed listening to Amanda as a guest.

Only other commentary I can provide is not at all being surprised by the dark turn taken, but I also am quite used to Japanese entertainment being like that by now. Whereas a lot of Western entertainment locks onto a specific tone, it seems common enough that a light hearted Japanese story will take sudden serious turns. Sometimes it is executed incredibly well. Other times... not so much.

Hail Lord Pudi!

Amanda also mentions playing DA:I and it was released in November 2014. She must have friends at BioWare.

I found the podcast fascinating. I played through the game a few times, enough to date Le Bel, the teacher, Yuuya and also get killed in my cave. I'd figured there was something fishy going on, because I'd seen the demolished skyscrapers and that Doctor in the infirmary really have me the creeps, but I had no idea it went that deep. Guess I'm gonna have to go back to it and date the other pigeons!!

Also, am I the only one who activated the human portraits? I know this is a pigeon dating sim, but I like the portraits, I wish they were on all the time.

Loved this spoiler ep. I'm embarrassed to say I bought the game on sale but haven't had the time to play it. I feel like this discussion hit the buttons of what I was curious about regarding the game (the cultural insight, the meta elements and the hidden narratives), so I kinda feel like I've got all I need just from the listen, though I'm sure there is a lot more than what was covered in the podcast.
I also feel like I need another layer in a visual novel (the narrative being the first layer) game to keep me engaged, ala 80 Days with the time/money/inventory management.

Seems like this is more of a choose your own adventure style book than a game? I'm glad these types of entertainment are available though. More choices are always better.

I cannot wait to listen to this podcast. I'm actually a little giddy just thinking about it.

It depends on what you mean by game. The game in visual novels like this is to get all the secrets of the narrative. Often, narratives only make sense when you unlock multiple storylines and inform each other about the goings-on when you're "not there." DA2 kind of works like this - the only Western game I know that kind of mixes storylines and has the thing where one storyline informs the others.

Metagaming is the game. You start thinking the way the author wants, and eventually it becomes obvious which choices unlock other secrets until you get the whole story. It's kind of like a choose-your-own-adventure narrative game.

The only other game I played that is outright like this was 999 on the DS. it's definitely quite a bit more "game-y", having some puzzle solving elements etc. It also has a few nice features like when you're fast forwarding through text, the game automatically stops and slows when you hit text/dialogue that you havent previously encountered. Good times. Recommended for anyone who played hato and is curious to see what else the genre has to offer.

The one thing about turning on the non pigeon images is that one of the pigeon's alternate images is also just a picture of pigeon. which is an extra level of weird you miss out on if you don't turn them on.

Great podcast. I love hearing about Rabbit's experience.

Not a game, but an underrated movie, but the multiple perspectives thing works really well in Hoodwinked

Wasn't planning on buying the game, still not, but enjoyed the podcast.

As an aside, I really like having this and DA:I's spoiler sections as separate episodes.
