GWJFL 2005: Week 8

FLETCHER BABY, COME TO ME

Fletch is offline until Tuesday. When do you want to play Grump?

Boom. Done. Thanks for the game, SpyNavy.

Stupid drunk.

Opti, when can you play?

Yup done.

Psycho we still on for (around) 9 p.m. central time?

Is that 7pm PST? If so, sure.

Grump played a great game. I hate to lose so he got to hear my creative use of the F word. That being said I have never seen more dropped passes then I had last night. 4 dropped passes to TO when he was wide open with no one even in the vicinity. I have completed that same pass a million times and last night 0-4. It was frustrating and robbed any enjoyment I had in the game. I simply gave up in the last 4-5 minutes when Grump went up by a score because the dropped passes were constant. Yes I had a couple of decent receptions but after I lost Westbrook on the 2nd play of the game - it was impossible to do any running. Grump called a great game and even my very good secondary did nothing. He threw at will and even a triple covered Heap 2 defenders in front and 1 in back would catch whatever was thrown his way. It was perhaps the most miserable game I played to date because I felt that no matter what I chose to do the AI was running the game.

No word from Dutty at all, he hasn''t gotten my PM and hasn''t posted on the site for 11 days now. I hope he''s ok, has anyone heard from him?

Sometimes Spy you feel like you just can''t get any momentum. I''v had 3 losses. One was a barnburner, but in the other 2, I have felt like that. In retrospect I think it is because I could not execute the run against either guy (Bags and Logan). But in each case I felt like the loss was my fault. Sucks when you feel like you have no control.

Edit: Though when you are playing with good guys and can have fun on a level seperate from the game, it''s still more fun than playing a stranger and winning.

Grump played a great game.

After I caught Grump on an off day and beat him in Week 2 I almost quit the league, made a little trophy for myself and never played Football again.

That''s what I''m going to do after I whip your ass next week.

No, really. No, REALLY.

Oh if only I didn''t like my sig the way it was...

Week 2: New England 38, Baltimore 10
J. Lewis - 13 att/14 yds = 1.1 ypc (0 TD)
so I had to go the air...
K. Boller - 11/24 for 152 yds, 1 TD, 2 Int (8 Sacks)

Week 8: Baltimore 27, Philadelphia 17
J. Lewis - 13 att/37 yds = 2.8 ypc (1 TD)
uh-oh, let''s try that passing game again...
K. Boller (POTG) 16/22 for 337 yds, 2 TD, 0 Int (3 Sacks)

As I told SpyNavy last night, I was working hard to not throw any interceptions. As has been more evident in GWJFL3, interceptions (they''re usually my fault, not the quaterback''s) are usually my downfall. Heap did go up and pull down some 50/50 balls, but I generally tried to make sure the receiver was open before gunning it in on slants, hooks and drags where the receiver is facing the QB (as opposed to those outs that hit TO in the back instead of the hands).

I have found it is better to take the sack than throw a pick. Obvious, yet wise. I disregarded that against Logan and thre my first pick of the season, and ye gods, it hurt. In the endzone.

Yes 7 p.m. PST is equal to 9 p.m. CST.

Two observations.

Last night was the first time all season that Chad Lewis had caught a single pass all season and he went 4-for-65 and a TD. At least two of those were clutch 3rd-and-long conversions. Were you just saving him for me? Ultimately, I had to start giving him as much attention as I was TO...

As suspect as many have declared 2k5''s record keeping to be, technically, there was only 1 drop by the Eagles last night and that was Chad Lewis. Apparently, all those balls in the back were McNabb''s fault and not TO. Go figure.

All i can say is nice!

Ohh and kudos to anybody who uses the TE.

Grump called a good game and the Ravens are a good D, but I felt like I was just getting absolutely beaten by the AI with dropped balls and just horrible defensive secondary play - I might as well have just let the Xbox play and not even have hit a button. It was pure frustration and I am sure I blistered Grumps ears, but it got to the point that I wished the game was over and I was only down by a few. The interception I threw was at the end where I was beyond caring.

Competitive games may not be your bag. I know that at our LAN parties RichyRambo, myself, his brother Phil, and the guys stopped playing games like RoN against each other as we all got mean and it diminished the fun of the get-togethers. We started playing against the computer as allies and we started having more fun.

Nah I dont think thats necessarily the case - I have been playing these games a long time :). I enjoyed my game with you which I lost and I have lost plenty to Grump before. For whatever reason this game was just frustrating from the opening drive all the way through. Bouncing passes off a receiver 3-4 times in a game on passes that almost always complete (especially when the guy is wide open) is just unfun. I have enjoyed my league participation so far and have lost quite a few, but this was just ""different"". This is no knock to Grump nor does it take away from his superior skills - I just dont like feeling like I am getting beaten by the AI and not my opponent. The balls where I was covered or hit at the moment of catching etc... I can understand - bouncing the ball from a fully set QB to a receiver going 3yds and out is utter nonsense especially when the DB is 5 yds away. That just plain sucks - I am just griping on this issue - it was very frustrating and unique to that game. Oh well my b*tchin is pointless and is apparently misinterpreted.

I actually consider how poorly the game handles quick outs like that (either a WR or taking your RB out the side for a quick catch and run) kind of a bug. Half the time the ball seems to go sailing over the guy''s head if it doesn''t hit him in the back of it. Of all people I''ve played Spy, you''ve actually put it to the best use and been the most consistent doing it.

Please don''t think that might tongue-in-cheek comments about McNabb indicate I don''t understand what you''re saying. There''s no doubt that TO was definitely open on those 5-yard out routes b/c I was more worried about the big play. Perhaps it had to do something with throwing the heat instead of the lob? I have no idea; I''m just spitballing.

Either way, as always, I enjoyed our game... I just start feeling bad when it''s obvious that the other guy isn''t... like maybe I should throw him an interception or something. Seriously, though, I''d much rather listen to my opponent Female Doggo than play without voice anyday. (I don''t know what exactly that has to do with the rest of the topic, but it''s true. ) SpyNavy, if you want, I''ll be happy to reset the game and we can try again tonight. Any excuse to play more football is a good one. Cheers!

P.S. I expect the sportsman in you to decline the reset (but if you want to, let me know as I was sincere) so if you want to play an unofficial rematch (even it''d be with the latest NFC-Champion-caliber Eagles roster vs. the we-choked-at-the-end Ravens), I''m up for that as well. You know where to find me (XFire).

No - I dont want a reset Grump. I was just joining the dropped pass bandwagon because I really felt it last evening. Up to now I had not experienced such glaring ""drops"" - especially with my bread and butter short game. By the 4th qtr I was getting quite irritated with the drops and the complete lack of secondary performance, but you win some you lose some.

I thought the dropped passes was a Player EQ thing... honestly.

I once thought as you ... Now I think it''s a Legendary thing.

If there is anybody in this league, in this forum or on this site that feels your pain....its me. The horrible experience you had seems to be a pattern with the game. Some of it can be attributed to style of play, bad play calling and sillly mistakes. But geesh sometimes the AI gives you no chance to compete what-so-ever. Remember, I had an opponent vouching for the ineptness of the AI. It seems to me that games forces you to play a certain way at times or has already decided who was going to win.

"Highlander" wrote:

To be honest, I''ve never experienced it (or perhaps I''ve just been too oblivious to notice it). I mean, I won the game through the air (Boller had a 145.1 QB rating) last night since I could outrun Philly''s linebackers. Of course, if I read SpyNavy''s post(s) correctly, he hadn''t experienced it until last night so perhaps my day is due. I wonder, though, if people perhaps just don''t pay enough attention to their players'' fatigue meters. In legendary they are more sensitive to fatigue and they tire faster as well. Again, I have no idea, but I''m just speculating...

"Grumpicus" wrote:

I can assure you that''s not the problem.

I''ve had this happen too. It is a problem that just seems to ""appear"" in certain games. I''m starting to agree that it is more a case of Legend and less of an EQ issue. It''s one of the reasons I have switched to such a ridiculously run-heavy offense. I don''t care to lose another game that way again.

eJay - I''m about 15 minutes late, because I was coming back from choir and the roads here are HORRIBLE. Like, I almost died.

But, I''m here, and ready to get my ass handed to me.
