Do Presidential Candidates talk to God?

Pages

I think we all knew it wouldn't be long after the 2014 midterms were over before we started ramping up for the 2016 Presidential election, but I was a little surprised to see something so official so quickly: I give you Jim Webb, former Senator from Virginia. http://webb2016.com/

I really liked him as a Senator, and him making it official so soon makes sense when you figure who his most-likely Democratic Primary challenger will be. That said, it's early.

Edit - Since this thread is only about who had God tell them to run, I changed the title. Thanks guys.

This election is Hillary's to lose.

And...there are a lot of ways I can think of that she will.

I guess they waited until the polls closed at least.

God no. It's too soon. Make this go away for at least another year and a half.

On November 28, 2006, at a White House reception for those newly elected to Congress, Webb did not choose to wait in the line to have his picture taken with the president, whom Webb often criticized during the campaign. The president approached Webb later and asked him, "How's your boy?", referring to Webb's son, a Marine serving in Iraq. Webb replied "I'd like to get them out of Iraq, Mr. President." Bush responded, "That's not what I asked you. How's your boy?" Webb responded, "That's between me and my boy, Mr. President." The Hill cited an anonymous source who claimed that Webb was so angered by the exchange that he confessed he was tempted to "slug" the president.Webb later remarked in an interview, "I'm not particularly interested in having a picture of me and George W. Bush on my wall."

I would vote for Webb for that exchange alone. He could be caught with a dead hooker in his trunk and it wouldn't matter.

Umm... wait... what? I dunno, makes the dude sound a little crazy. I don't really know him that well, but that's not a great first thing to see from him.

Like I get not wanting the picture on your wall, but everything else? Meh.

Hi thread - we're going to be besties!

(Yes, far too early)

I just like that he is pretty much the only politician who had the balls to call out the Disaster in the Desert for what it was: the biggest intentional presidential fcukup in American history.

My first presidential election as a resident of Iowa...

You're about to find out the single handshake does not make up for the actual weeks of real time you will see political advertising.

Welcome to the jungle, Iso!

I have the terrible feeling that Rand Paul is going to win this one. I'll be happy to be proven wrong.

While this is a perfectly reasonable reaction, there's an important thing to keep in mind: as the Webb link demonstrates, for politicians and their cronies it's never too soon. The next election is always in process - deals are being made, favors granted and received, regulations to protect cronies being quietly written. If you ever wonder why "special interests" seem to have such a hold on politics, this right here is why - the voters don't want to hear about it or deal with it because they have their own lives to deal with, but for lobbyists it's their daily routine.

Well, he's one of those punchy Southern sons-of-the-earth types, but he punches up, not down. He's a hard-nosed realist from what I remember, a Democrat with enough of what Republicans consider "common sense" to get elected in Virginia.

Another vote for the "not to soon" category. This is Merica damnit! You're lucky we waited until the 2014 elections were mostly done being counted!

Well that's all kinds of terrifying and depressing.

I'd rather vote for Kang than Ted Cruz.

...Not Kodos, though, right? He's a monster.

At least Kang is our monster.

OK, let's start the official score keeping for the 2016 race.

Number of GOP candidates claiming god wants them to be president: 1

Let's see if they can top 2012's record of four.

Technically, it's his dad claiming it.

Almost Obama claiming that God literally spoke to him and directed him personally to run for President, and yet not that at all.

Please, we were only claiming he was the second coming of Christ, not God. Huge diff.

You forgot the context where fringe Republican media and party members and their constituents (and unfortunately plenty of average folks) were calling him a secret Muslim.

This was him trying to prove his Christianity, not declare himself chosen by God.

Yes! Beat OG to the punch!
