Blizzard's Overwatch Catch-All

Hmm, based on that shoutcast there is no way I'm going to be able to keep up in this game. It's just too fast moving and too flashy. Half the time I couldn't tell what was going on in that video.

So... you kids have fun I guess.

There seems to be an ultimate the gets charged up over time with kills and that's it from what we've seen so far.

I personally have always hated the idea of progression and kill-streak rewards in team-based multiplayer shooters. Locking off important abilities (BF3 Medic says "Hi") in team-based games where strategic concerns are real is problematic. But I'm adverse to any type of grind in multi-player whatsoever. I don't want to trade in significant amounts of my limited time just so I can play the "real" game. Beings a free-to-play game, there'll probably be some over-priced option in there for me to buy my way to what should have been the starting point.
And in regards to kill-streaks, I find they just create a snowball effect. The winning team wins harder, and things turn into a roll. Curb-stomps aren't that fun, on either side of it. The best matches have good back-and-forth and solid teamwork, win or lose.

I am looking at this game as a mix between TF2 and League of Legends. That sound like a fantastic combination. I am very sure that these "champions" so to speak won't be the last. I have a feeling that we will see new characters on a monthly basis.

Same. I loved how forgiving TF2 was toward old timers like me. All I'd see in this game is a kill cam slideshow. Which isn't to say it doesn't look great.

The tempo there seemed good to me, that video has me very much onboard, the female character models are acceptable for me (definitely a lot of booty going on) but I'd like some 'chunky' female characters, hopefully something they can add.

I haven't been in on a competitive multi game in a long while. Keen to change that.

I think many art directors fail because they choose inspiration from anime... for body styles. The fact is there is ample source material for more healthy, fit or more heroic body types. I would love to see female characters inspired by these young women:

Honestly I hope we see some ladies like these in a Blizzard game. Or these shapes, anyway:

With this and your previous comment about FPS that are a little slower, have you ever tried Guns of Icarus? It's a more tactical, stately approach to FPS combat, without sacrificing tension and teamwork.

Are those your designs wipEout?

As for the reflex challenged, I noticed on the game play video that a few of the characters had very non twitch skills. A lot of people will play hanzo but for that ricochet shot that requires diddly squat aiming precision. A lot of the tank abilities seem like they are annihilate-everything-in-a-vague-direction skills. Of course there are also the deployments, turrets, etc.

They have no feet

Thanks for posting about guns of icarus / guns of icarus online , that looks fun!

Oops! Forgot to link to the original artist

They're by Nurzhan Bekkaliev. I just really dig his style, and find the non-comic book-standard shapes he uses for his women refreshing, at times (granted, there are other drawings that have paper-thin waists, but his exaggerations aren't over-sexualized or egregious, in my opinion).

No probs, I've had a lot of fun with it. To get back on topic, I have to admit I'm not that excited about Overwatch. I'm sure Blizzard will polish it to within an inch of its life, but it really does look very similar in playstyle to TF2. It's early days of course, but I'll be interested to see whether all the player abilities end up providing a deeper gameplay experience, or just give you more reasons to swear about not having any way of preventing a death. That'll be the interesting balance for them to hit: skill versus pretty flashy ultimate abilities.

According to the shoutcast, you build up your ultimate from dealing and taking damage, so should be fine there.
And it was so frenetic because they kept switching between characters all the time, and ya know, shouting.

Indeed, kill everything in the general area seems to be the focus for specials, and even the sniping didn't look difficult. I really like Pharah's special, Macross Missile Massacre!
It's certainly dynamic, but I agree, if it's too much like TF2, I'll have to skip it, eventually (25 hours TF2 if steam is to be believed).

Tracer, Scout
Pharah, Soldier
Tolbjorn, Engineer
Widowmaker, Sniper
Mercy, Medic

I had the exact same response. You will take very little enjoyment from Overwatch. The mode they decided to showcase is straight from TF2.

Oh, I recognized the mode. It's more about the pacing, and the dying-specifically how often that happens and whether I do anything useful or fun in a life.

They didn't even change the name. But I don't care, I'm still in if it hits big. I played plenty of TF2 but still feel I missed the best of it.

Yeah, it was kind of telling that the power they seemed most excited about was the portal, which lets you get right back into the action after you die every fifteen seconds.

Well I don't have worries that my brain can't keep up but I know my old PC won't. Given the success of Diablo III on console I really hope they are developing next gen console versions of this game concurrently, it seems a natural fit.

Nevermind, I just checked it after posting...and it is still lacking sort of all the information

Here are two other ones for compensation of my bad post:

A reporter for The Escapist wrote up a quick review of some hands-on time with OverWatch from Blizzcon.

My big takeway from the article was that - yes this feels like Blizzard's challenge to TF2 (much like Hearthstone could be said to be their take on Magic: the Gathering Online). And that, like most Blizzard entries into established gamespace - they do a good job of making a genre very accessible/approachable.

I'm intrigued, but as BadKen says, if the action is too fast paced it may leave my old bones in the dust.

I've read so much and seen so much about this game....really need to play it.

You know, I played a bunch of Super Monday Night Combat a long time ago, and enjoyed the hell out of it. But its problem was lack of players and general lack of popularity. Overwatch looks a lot like SMNC, both in tone and in gameplay, so if they can make that TF2+LOL formula work, I will be all over it.

Dating myself here, but I haven't been deeply into an FPS since the original Unreal Tournament.

But Blizzard is my favorite game company, and I usually like just about everything they put out.

From the IGN preview:

Support heroes heal, buff, and add utility to a team. Kaplan said he expects this role to be popular with people who aren't normally into the shooter genre.

So maybe that would be a good starting point for me?

OTOH, I loved playing the Tank role in 5-person WoW groups, so maybe that would be a good fit, too.

The best part of Unreal Tournament was 1) Unreal Tournament and 2) the one shot kill plasma rifle mutator.
