Blizzard's Overwatch Catch-All

I was meh but watching it being played at Blizzcon is changing my opinion.

There aren't that many silly shooters around. TF2 and maybe Monday Night Combat are the only ones I can think of right now.

We need more silly shooters, and this looks like a silly shooter.

I'm really pumped for this. Might get me back into a normal rhythm with playing multiplayer games again.

Loadout

Is one of those facts 9.5/10?

It reminds me a lot of Super MNC. The characters all look very similar, even down to the Gorilla who gets a regular name instead of a cool one. I really enjoyed that game though, so if this has the player base that SMNC lacked, I'll be playing.

Nice. Added to the first post.

They said they don't know what the pricing will be, but with the amount of heroes they're teasing I just assume it will be a F2P model of some sort. I love team fortress, and most of what blizzard does is at least fun - so I'm fully on the hype bandwagon.

Agreed, but don't forget the superb Garden Warfare

I find this game interesting. Signed up for beta. TF2 rip off for sure. But if done right, why not

I'm down for this. Yea it looks kind of like Team Fortress 2, but that game is now seven years old. I played it, I'm done with it, and we haven't had a good cartoonish shooter since. So I hope this shooter is, in fact, good.

Signed up for the Beta. Looks pretty.

I'm pumped, this looks great

This thing is SO close to a superhero FPS, they should have just yanked out most of the guns and leaned into it.

This looks fantastic. It's about time someone takes on TF2.

Sign me up!

(I signed up)

So, just like TF2...

A cartoonish team based multiplayer shooter. Hmm, pretty similar conceptually to Team Fortress. Actually in thinking about it, Blizzard really doesn't innovate, pretty much ever. All their games are derivative. What they do very well though is perfect. So yeah, they may be all clones of other games, but they're shiny, fun well polished clones

Diablo?

I will accept Diablo as an answer lol Blizzards last decade has been pretty devoid of new ideas but honestly, it's ok. Like I said in my post, they may not be original but they are almost always flawlessly executed with a ton of polish. I'm excited by Overwatch, can't wait to check it out.

I have no idea whether this will be fun or not

Spoiler:

It will be fun.

What I do know is that the trailer is awesome.

Spoiler:

So is the gameplay trailer

. Looks like a Pixar film. Amazing.

Blizzard isn't the Wright Brothers, Blizzard is Boeing. They don't invent something, they innovate and refine the something to the tune of billions of dollars.

Good thing they aren't Langley.

Good to see Blizzard's art department growing up a little and taking into account many of the criticism's leveled at the games industry (and themselves, specifically) over the past few...oh. No? Still going for the boobs n' skin-tight numbers for the ladies (and lady-robots)? Stupid shoulderpads for the gentlemen? Space dwarf? Some grim reaper jerk who looks like an escapee from some angry goth teenager's text-book doodling.

Ok then...I'll be over in the corner trying not to yawn.

I think that's being way too harsh. There's quite a bit of variety for both men and women. There's the Gundam lady and the trickster girl or the vixen. It'd be nice if the cast had female characters that didn't rely at all on their looks (Gundam lady is close, but not quite there) but it's still a decently diverse cast and a clear step in the right direction compared to League of Legends, SMITE or Blizzard's own past work.

Some day, someone will make a team-based, class-based shooter without snipers, and I will play that game from the day it's released until my death.

+1500

Any game, and I mean ANY game can be instantly improved, dramatically improved, by removing the snipers. A sniper with wallhack? Gonna be two or three Widowmakers every game.

I'll just have to make a career out of hunting them.

But, daaaamn, Blizzard needs to make some movies. A full length version of that cinematic? Just take my money.

Kotaku explicitly confirmed this game was spun out of Titan.

Too much variety, I should think. I was immediately struck by the fact that many of the characters seem to be from different games. I guess TF2 has spoiled me with its different-but-related character design (before hats, I mean). Even the various Dota PCs looks like they're from the same universe. But Death Mask Guy, Giant Lavender Gundam, Turret Bot, and Cleavage Sniper are so different from each other as to be jarring. I guess that's a different-factions thing, but it looks like a completely-different-art-teams thing.

And make no mistake -- this is absolutely, unequivocally Titan, dressed up in new gameplay clothes. The fact that Titan was cancelled, and Overwatch comes seemingly out of nowhere can't be a coincidence. I guess they'd be foolish to throw out seven years of ideas and assets. I think this looks like the PVP component of Titan (MMO), dropped into TF2's match structure. Though interestingly, while everyone keeps saying that it's ripping off TF2 (Medic, Engineer), the whole thing looks and feels to me like a first-person MOBA: The highly-differentiated heroes, the special powers, and so on.

It's weird seeing these new-game-type crossovers (TF2/MOBA). It's a strange new world.

Yeah, it's not like all the women's character designs are uniformly lithe and leggy with bodytight clothes and armor that show off their figure!

...Well, ok, maybe they are, but one of them has some semi-bulky armor, that's totally on par with the variety for the rest of the cast! Right?

Sorry, I love Blizzard's quality of art, but they played it "safe" with their women character designs here. Pyxistyx's criticisms are quite valid.

Oops. Well, that either makes me clever-by-half for independently deducing this, or a redundant redundancy full of sound and fury, signifying nothing. Carry on then.

Kotaku wrote:

Overwatch is a reworked version of the PVP portions of Blizzard's Titan, the long-in-development MMO that was overhauled in mid-2013. Despite reports earlier this year that Titan had been cancelled, the game actually morphed into Overwatch last year, according to a person familiar with the project.

So you're concerned they're not squat enough? Have you played a video game before? There's room for improvement, but again, this is way better than the vast majority of competing games and better than Blizzard's past work. In fact, can you tell me what competitive multiplayer games do it better? I'm curious 'cause I can't think of any.
