I was looking for this thread the other night after watching the Halo 2: Remastered Documentary on XBox Live.

I was a late comer to the Halo series, having never owned an original XBOX. I played Halo: CE and Halo 2 single player on the 360 before Halo 3 came out, and have played every game since. They're fun single player shooters. I'm not really into the lore all that much, and the finer story beats are lost on me, but I still enjoy playing through the campaigns.

I'm most excited about seeing the Halo 2 HD-ifying. The cutscenes in the documentary looked pretty damn good.

As you could probably sense during the documentary, the finer story beats are lost on pretty much everybody, probably even the writers!

Thanks for posting... will try to make the OP better soonish.

Woohoo. There will be much blasting.

I own all 4 already and have only finished 3 and started Combat Evolved.... I figured this is probably the only way for me to ever play the other titles (the 360 is a lonely device and the original Xbox is long gone).

I'll see you all online next week!

450 achievements.... holy crap

This is making me rethink my need to buy an XBone.

I had sworn off next gen, but...

Some of the screenshots they are posting on FacePage are amazing.

This would be worth it for Halo 2 multiplayer alone. And I don't even mean the remastered Anniversary multiplayer. I would buy it purely for Halo 2 in 1080p60 + more modern netcode. Everything else is bonus.

You can grab every one of those off of IGN's Youtube page and post them so that they run here. I have put most of them up at some point in the XB1 thread. They pretty much made this a day one purchase for me, period.

I looked at one on YouTube but it was not 60fps, unless I did something wrong. For me, the 60fps was the selling point of the videos.

That is fair. They do look amazing on IGN's site. They probably want the eyeballs, which is understandable.

Just make sure your running Chrome so you can see them in 60fps on youtube.

I am in for sure. Halo takes me way back. It was the game that got me hooked on consoles. Many, many years ago, I was a die-hard PC gamer. Quarterly hardware upgrades, all that jazz. I had won an Xbox in a vendor drawing and my office mate told me, "You HAVE to get Halo." I wuz all, "What's that??" Bwahahahaha.

Almost 13 years later...

Yeah, this was a no-brainer pre-order for me. Watch that H2 video with the Steve Vai guitar. OH YEAH.

Finally something to break Destiny's hold on me!

The option to switch back to the original graphics is . . . why? Why would anybody want to do that to themselves?

Never played Halo multiplayer. I suspect that will change.

Same reason the original Wolfenstein was playable as an easter egg in the recent remake. Nostalgia is a hell of a drug.

Looking forward to your Halo MP impressions...the amount of fun I've had in those various game modes and maps through the years is staggering.

My story is similar. I was a PS2 fanboy for the longest time. Halo CE changed that eventually. Here's the weirdest thing: I EVEN PLAYED HALO on the Mac, I think? Maybe it was PC... it did NOTHING for me. I couldn't stand it.

Then this one really lame game came out on PS2 and it looked better on XBOX. And I think I was even hoping for more features, because the promise of this game was so high, but the delivery was pretty awful. Well, it turned out to be equally lame on the Xbox. But in the process... I tried Halo again. Something clicked. Part of it was the controller... the feel of the trigger, the kick of the vibration feedback... suddenly I was entranced. I played through it on every difficulty level, even Legendary. Loved it. And then Halo2. The story wasn't great, and I still hate parts of the story... but while I had skipped multiplayer for Halo CE, Halo2 included some of my friends from the good ol' days. That was it. I was a Halo fan going forward.

Halo3, still not a great story, whatever. Stories got better with Halo:ODST with Firefight mode? My GOD. Halo:Reach... great story. Halo 4 was good as well.

I've completed Legendary on every single campaign.

I have a particular soft spot for Firefight mode in ODST. This is a pic of my brother and I playing together. I drove, he mini gunned. We got to shoot the sh*t while shooting sh*t. It was amazing. He's passed on now, but... I swear Firefight brought us closer together than ever. I had the above picture turned into a "painting" through the Halo website, and sent it to him. Now that he's gone it hangs proudly in my office. RIP, "Stinky Gato."

I tried Halo on the first Xbox, and like all shooters on a console I couldn't control it and it made me nauseous. But I was still excited to play it, so I gave it a go on my eMac. I got further, really enjoying everything, but it chugged and was just not worth going forward

I finally bought it a second time and convinced myself that if millions of kids can play this thing, I sure as hell could. At some moment it clicked. It became the game to that taught me to play a fps with a controller.

In so many ways, it defines what I want in a shooter. Screw realism, it created levels, and eventually multiplayer that were fun as hell.

I pre-ordered the digital version on Saturday. Even though Halo 2 is my least favorite Halo game (well besides Halo Wars) I am looking forward to playing it again. I was very tempted to play the OG edition after playing Halo Anniversary when it came out.

One question though: anyone seen any info on local multiplayer support for this? I haven't seen a mention of split-screen support anywhere on the product pages for it. This was one of the big selling ports for the original Halo and Halo 2 for me and it would be nice to have the option in the remake as well.

I saw one mention from Frankie's Twitter recently... "BTW FOV thing in split screen is a known issue. Given scale of rest of game the fix had to be deprioritized. It will be updated shortly...." (But not in the day one content update.)

In short, it's apparently going to be there, but broken... for now.

dRailer,

That's another thing I have always loved about the Halo franchise: the bond you get with other folks playing and slaying, clawing your way through a legendary co-op or some general PvP madness.

Two co-op experiences will always hold fond memories for me, and hours and hours invested: Halo and L4D. So many good times.

I am very sorry for your loss.

It's so you can compare how it looks now against how it really used to look, rather than how you remember it.

A gimmick, for sure, but one that probably helps with the perception of the remake quality. Really makes the graphic difference stand out.

Never played Halo multiplayer. I suspect that will change.

It better change. Halo 2, I would take over almost every multiplayer shooter that has come since.

The ranking system alone is great, and it's a damn shame it has not been copied by everyone since. Rankings were a reflection of your skill level, not time played. Play bad, and your ranking goes down. Play long enough, and you'll pretty much top out around a certain ranking - you're not going to continue going up just because you're putting in more hours. And, of course, that ranking plays into who you get matched against. Most effective system of matching you with people of your talent level that I've yet seen in action.

And, of course, one of the greatest thing about Halo is the lack of a stupid unlock treadmill. Getting your hands on weapons is about controlling the map, not grinding levels and "unlocking" them.

Halo 3 was nearly as good, and the first Halo was too, but lacked online MP except on the much lesser played PC version (and it lacked the quality MP supporting system that Halo 2 introduced). Really looking forward to going back into the original Halo with proper online support.

"Broken" is not a fair word. Split screen MP will absolutely work. The problem is that the FOV does not match the original game - it is (currently) a good bit narrower. Which is a disappointing shortcoming, and it's good that they are taking action on it after the community noticed the problem, but it hardly means the feature as shipped is broken.

Of course, I am only going on the developer's words here, I have zero hands-on experience with it. Last time I played Halo split screen, it was the original game on Xbox and I had a "Duke" controller in my hands.

One million times this!

The reason that it wasn't copied is that players never like to feel they leveled out lower than someone else and that pushing higher is the easiest way to keep players with short attention spans from moving on to the next shiny thing. But this system offers a purity in MP that you just don't see anymore. We can probably blame WoW. Bungie learned to stop worrying and love the treadmill. I'm glad 343i is here to recover this game.

All of my favorite MP shooters have lacked the unlock treadmill, with the lone exception of Battlefield 2142.

I am in favor of anything to de-COD-ify online MP shooters. I actually have nothing against COD, I would just like for those characteristics to stay in COD, and not spoil other franchises.

We watched the making of vidoc this morning and I couldn't be more excited. The attention to detail is amazing.

I just sent an email to our old Halo group to try and get the gang back together. We played Halo 2 and 3 for years on end. Halo 4 sent us all going our separate ways, as it lacked single flag CTF and various other modes that made Halo what it was to us. Really hoping that Halo 5 can get back to its roots with some nice asymmetrical maps and offense/defense modes.

I wonder if they will look at the data for the MCC and try to build MP for Halo 5 around what everyone likes the most out of the MCC.

Jayhawker wrote:

Would make sense. They've already described it as "back to roots" and getting away from the COD-y unlocks and kill streaks that snuck into the later titles.

(Though they also have revealed armor unlocks for Halo 5 already, but I presume these are strictly cosmetic).

I'm worried about their "eSports" MP comments and "arena" focus. I interpret that to mean a more COD type that focuses on k/d ratios and kill streaks and less on Offense/defense objective type modes. Basically, more Slayer and control and less CTF and Assault. I'm sure they will have TONS of data coming from the MCC that will hopefully steer them in the right direction.

Anyway, I'm very surprised that there isn't some sort of MCC bundle for the holidays. I would think that thing would sell like crazy.

There was a spot in Halo Anniversary (the swamp level before the Flood shows up) where I had to switch back to old school graphics just to be able to see the grunts running through the bushes and stuff they added in the new graphics.

Hey just realized I haven't see any news about a season pass for this game... that is very refreshing
