Marvel Media (Spoiler Thread)

I believe Marvel gave the cinematic universe its own universe number, just as the Ultimate line of comics has a separate number attached. So it all exists within the Marvel Multiverse.

Not necessarily. It could be the focus of the one film, but have echoes and ramifications beyond it. And with no subtitles on Captain Marvel and Black Panther it could be about their struggles to find how they fit in with a world of governments increasingly uneasy with superhumans that are out of their control. T'challa's role as king and Carol's history with the Air Force could be natural hooks.

I imagine that like Winter Soldier, the aftermath will be felt first and foremost in Agents of SHIELD. It'd be really nice if Marvel let AoS do some foreshadowing for Civil War too. Not being able to do so with the Hydra takeover of SHIELD made the season up until that point way more disconnected and bland than it needed to be. Really I'd like to see the crossovers between the shows and the movies go both ways.

Yup, it's Earth-199999.

Yeah, I'm sure there will be repercussions in some of the movies and the series' but it won't be a huge event building up to an Avengers Civil War movie that most (myself included) were expecting. That's why I said 'pretty minor.' I'm glad the overall focus is on the Infinity Gauntlet they have been teasing us with for years now. Civil War seemed like it was going to be a major distraction from that.

I'm actually kind of excited that the MCU is about producing a synthesis of all of the storylines and plot material that Marvel's generated over the years rather than trying to produce straight-up adaptations of the original runs of the material.

Yes! That's exactly what I like about it!

And it's also why I'm not heartbroken that they don't have all their heroes back yet, and also why I'm a little nervous about all the TV shows and movies they have in production right now. One of the things I tend to dislike about comic book narratives, especially with sprawling cross-over narratives, is how many characters they bring in and try to juggle. Not having access to all of their properties, and having to work primarily with what they've been able to build up in the popular consciousness over the last few years, has by-and-large lead to leaner, better storytelling.

The MCU is comic book stories without all those little asterisks that remind you that this is a storyline from Fantastic Four #67, Ultimate X-Men #13, Ant-Man vs Spider-Man #4, and The Amazing Fantastic Four #301.

Considering current events in AoS:

Spoiler:

Skye's innate powers (whatever they are), those kids from the academy developing super powers, and Skye's dad

I wouldn't be surprised if AoS is slowly intended to lay some of the groundwork Civil War.

Spoiler:

The only thing keeping Civil War from making sense cinematically is the complete lack of actual super powers native to Earth. While I can see the addition of Quicksilver or Scarlet Witch could only hammer home that this is now something that is happening everywhere, a television series is a great way to introduce a larger cast of super-powered characters to be concerned about. By time Avengers 2 hits theaters Agents of SHIELD should be done its second season, or at least nearing the conclusion (and DareDevil will be hitting Netflix, theoretically), and by time Captain America: Civil War hits the end of season three will have occurred or be nearing.

The question is how seriously Marvel is taking Agents of SHIELD or the remaining TV shows that will premiere on Netflix in regards to the cinematic universe. We've seen the films have an impact on the television series, but have not seen the reverse come true yet. But to me, there's no other way Civil War would effectively work. You need that cast of characters to build on.

Oddly enough, I was assuming they'd do Infinity Gauntlet first, then Civil War, in an effort to buy time for more heroes to premiere and become better known to audiences.

One thing I'm wondering; how long is Whedon committed to the Avengers films? Is he writing and directing the Infinity War entries, or is Age of Ultron his last one? I have a fair bit of concern over how well someone else will handle the ensemble cast approach that he is so good with, as well as the writing style having such an excellent character focus.

Yeah, I'm a bit of a Joss fanboy, but he's earned my adoration.

I'm wondering even farther than Agents of SHIELD, into how the Netflix series will deal with this stuff. While not in the main line of the movie universe, I'm assuming at least some repercussions will affect the story set ups that we haven't even seen yet.

Oh, I've no doubt that the Netflix shows will incorporate what happens in the movies into them, I'd just like to see some of that flow the other way too. Not a whole lot, because like Clock, I don't want people who aren't following all the various shows to be lost when watching the movies, but it'd be nice to have the shows do more than just deal with the aftermath, too maybe lay a little of the groundwork for events that come to a head in the movies. For Civil War, it'd be nice to the various agents of SHIELD start their journey to whichever side they're on at the start of the movie.

One thing I think they've done brilliantly is that you don't need to have seen all of the other films/shows to enjoy them. If you only just watched the Iron Man films for instance you wouldn't be confused at all.

I don't entirely agree; the jump from Captain America to Winter Soldier would be a little jarring without watching Avengers between the two.

Still not as good as their Frozen one That one is my favorite.

I will admit, though, that I would totally watch a stand-alone She-Hulk film.

I'm thinking AoS is going to have a bigger tie with The Inhumans. We've already had a Kree corpse in season 1 and I'm thinking this season's start is pointing them down that path with the symbols and artifacts.

Double posts are a sign of Kree hybrid enhancements.

Is the first season of Agents of Shield available on a subscription service yet, or is it still only pay per episode?

Doesn't look like it. Hulu only has the last 5 episodes.

Captain Marvel is so far away. It is ridiculous they are not going to have a female superhero lead for almost another four years.

Who would play Captain Marvel though? But yes, I want the red sash and yellow lightning bolt costume. Seriously, the red sash makes it super awesome.
The infographic re: movie rights got me depressed again, I forgot about Deadpool.
Agents of Shield has such a cool role. I just can't watch it because of Skye, she's literally too attractive (and too skinny) and it unnerves me.

Gremlin wrote:

As would I. I mean, it can't be worse than the Hulk movies. Okay, it can, but it seems unlikely.
I think they'd have to go full CG for when in Hulk mode though, but they do that for Hulk anyway, so not too much of a problem.

I don't think She-Hulk would work that well at this point; Hulk is OK to do in CGI, because all Hulk needs to do is rage and smash. CGI can do that sort of emoting, but She-Hulk would need to be a "real" character, and I don't think the current state if CGI could move far enough or if the Uncanny Valley to make it work.

HULK DOUBLE-POST.

Hmmm, no, I think he did sufficient emoting in Marvel's Avengers.
They've also got that Avatar tech ya know.

Not to mention Andy Serkis. I mean, there's gotta be an Andrea Serkis out there, right?

I saw winter soldier recently. Thought it was an improvement over the first which I found campy. The action was directed much much tighter.

Not 100% about the whole spy theme, and I found Hydra's evil Nazi thing to be kind of boring in the few comics I read. I think the entire movie would have been more interesting if it was just about over reach of surveillance and power, not that heil hydra stuff. Still enjoyed the film though

So the ending, I'm guessing quicksilver and Scarlet witch are the result of... Lab testing from the scepter?

I like campy in my superhero movies... well all the movies...

I went ahead and tagged this as a spoiler thread so that we can talk more openly about the movies, shows, and comics without anyone feeling like they were caught off guard by something.

Smart thinking.

You never know when "they" may be watching.

Secret Warriors has a decent Hydra/shield story. Well more interesting for the characters rather than the actual Shield/Hydra/Leviathan conflict.

Small clip of Ant-man, also so other explosions etc.

I could have sworn that there was an Ant Man thread, but I suck at finding threads evidently.

According to actress Evangeline Lilly, Edgar Wright's Ant-Man wouldn't have fit the cinematic universe. She says it would have been a delight, very Wright in style, and very comic booky, but it wouldn't have been consistent with the Cinematic Universe tone.

That could mean a lot of things, and I really wish there could be some embellishment. To me, the consistency between the films is a blessing and curse at the same time. Edgar Wright doing a super hero film in this universe could actually be refreshing, seeing as he specializes in personal stories amid Blockbuster scenery. But let's face it, World's End, Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and Scott Pilgrim don't exactly have big bombastic CG'ed third acts like the Marvel films do, and they all seem eager to shoe-horn in. In fact, now that I think about it, they haven't always been as big as in Wave Two. Iron Man was the street outside Stark Industries with two mechs. Relatively small. The Incredible Hulk was a lot more devastating than that, but still limited in scope compared to, say, Captain America: Winter Soldier or Thor: The Dark World. Hell, even the first Thor was limited to a small town compared to London and Asgard.

Granted I'm just speculating here on a possible difference based on Wright's previous work. I don't know if he would have done a smaller finale or a big explosive one as well. But honestly, maybe, just maybe, the Marvel universe could use a little less consistency (I mean, I love Guardians of the Galaxy, but it was totally running the entire Marvel Playbook the whole time).
