Tomb Raider reboot

Are these timed exclusives proven to work that way? Real exclusives - the way we used to use the word - have a lot of value, but I'm dubious that timed exclusives really have the same impact.

One can assume that real exclusives would be better for the console manufacturers and this is just the best they can get for the money. I just wonder whether it's actually worth it.

Practically nothing is ever proven in the pseudo-science of economics.

I honestly don't have much of an issue with timed exclusives. I don't know what advantage they provide to a console manufacturer. Maybe just get a person using the console they had gathering dust next to the TV and thus hopefully remind them that it's an option for gaming in general? But at least in these cases the games end up being everywhere. A 6 month delay like Destiny to PC is a bit extreme, but whatever.

It's hard to find good numbers and the landscape is constantly changing, but my thought is this: one exclusive might make a slight difference, but if you can consistently get timed exclusives that people want, it could be enough to push someone to your brand. Like, "Mom finally said she'd get me a console this Christmas... I notice that the Xbox One got Tomb Raider, Generic Shooter IX: Commandos, Driving Sandbox Parkour City, and Chibi Bloodsport Kittens all a year before Playstation 4. I don't like it when I can't tell people on internet forums I'm way ahead of them, so..."

I seriously doubt Tomb Raider being a timed exclusive is going to sell more Xbox Ones. However, having several timed and/or indefinite exclusives will indeed sell consoles. My guess is that Microsoft is going to go after a lot more third-party titles to try to gain ground on th PS4.

Day One purchase.

Destiny is officially coming to PC?

Good question. That should probably be "rumored 6 month delay." I don't know that there's been an actual announcement.

I was thinking the same thing.

I think that's a good point. If one console is consistently ahead of the other in release dates, that becomes a meaningful selling point.

Looks like Rise of the Tomb Raider (blech) is officially coming to both Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Ryse of the Tomb Raider - Lara goes back in time and teams up with whoevertheprotagonistwas.

The Tomb Raider Rises - Lara becomes the ocean tide.

The Tomb Raider Rose - A prequel.

I just got around to playing this last weekend and am just about finished with the campaign (I think). I am coming away a little underwhelmed after all the hype. Aside from the combat I feel like they took everything I liked about the Tomb Raider series and replaced it with Uncharted. I now go into every scene hovering over the "Y" button expecting some over the top quick time event. On the plus side the controls feels way better then Uncharted. The weapon play, aiming, and character responsiveness is spot on but the limited puzzle solving and exploring is really a downer. The AI being dumb as nails, with a 360 line of sight, doesn't help the focus on combat. I think I just went into the game with expectations that were way too high.

I get the Uncharted comparisons to a degree. While there are plenty of tense moments and some crazy things you're exploring... at the same time, it's internally consistent with the story... unlike Uncharted where they come up with a list of cool ideas, throw darts at them, then come up with a story to match.

Haha, we'll have to disagree on the definition of internally consistent - the discussions that were had about the logic of the story/island have been done to death. :p

Random question - are there any people that have this on their pile on Xbone that are willing/interested in helping a poor achievement hunter knock out a couple online cheevs? Shouldn't take more than an hour.

I'm happy to - - I haven't spent much time in the online area in either last-gen or this one, but I'm happy to be torn away from Destiny every once in awhile...

Picked this up on the Steam sale.

Where's my target lock? Where are my acrobatics during combat? What's with this having to aim crap? This sure as heck doesn't feel like the old Tomb Raider that I remember.

It started out OK. Promising even. Then as I got farther in they decided to ramp up the combat instead of the platforming/traversal...

I'm glad I only paid $4 for this.

So.... you read nothing about the game in the year+ that it's been out? The fact that the game replaced a lot of the environmental puzzle solving with Unchartedesque set pieces wasn't exactly a secret at release and definitely isn't now.

Yeah, it's a lot more combat-focused than prior Tomb Raiders... the actual tomb raiding and puzzle-solving is pretty minimal.

It's still a damn fine game, however. You did real well for $4.

Take it as it comes, and remember that it's a reboot; they're changing the rules some. If you play the game it actually is, as opposed to expecting another old Tomb Raider, I think you'll probably like it a lot.

So I would like to try and do an MP session to knock out a couple of achievements on xbox. I have myself, DrJekl, hopefully Megapute - and need one more. Are people available for an hour or so Monday or Tuesday of next week around 830 central?

I think I read some stuff about it, but I wasn't paying much attention at the time. Honestly, most of what I heard and read centered on how rape-y the previews made it seem, and that kind of overshadowed my perceptions of the actual game.

I was mostly venting because I was getting increasingly frustrated by the shooting mechanics. I think it hit my limit for what I'm willing to put up with when I'm trying to aim with an analog stick. I'm going to give it another go with mouse and n52 and see if it works better. Can I set it up so that I can pick up a controller for the platform ing and then put my hand on the mouse when the combat starts? I did something similar with GTA 3 back in the day (drive with joystick, use mouse and keyboard on foot) and it worked really well.

Also... Early on the game is different, but there's a nice balance of traversal and gunplay. Then the gunplay ramps up while the traversal stays largely the same. I mean mechanically... The world is often falling apart around you later on, but the button presses haven't gotten that much more difficult.

I might be. 360 or XB1?

XB1, son!

Cool. What are you needing? I don't think I have played any MP. I heard it wad actually good, so I kind of want to try it out.

Also, what do you think of the friends section in the latest update, with the weekly achievement leaderboard?

Love it - I have been in the preview program for a while so I have been using it already. Love it, love it, love it. The dashboard is finally "next-gen" and working like it should.

RE: MP - there is one achievement for winning on all modes and I really just need one of them - the Free For All - and it needs 4 players. There are a couple others that only take a minute that we could all knock out just for fun:)

Sally - - I only just saw this now, but if you still needed a four and wanted to tear me away from new'n'shiny, I am probably good for it. Weekends are always better, but weeknights work, occasionally.

With that new TrueAchievements app, it's going to be hard to *avoid* 'cheevo hunting for sure...

Would people be around on Saturday or Sunday? Shouldn't take more than an hour and should net a few nice cheevs.
