Starpoint Gemini Catch-All

From Rock, Paper, Shotgun. The article shows a trailer of a game that looks like a simplified EVE online, but it's single player. Since I could never get into EVE, but the premise sounded good, this looks like it might be a lot of fun. I think I will be keeping an eye on this!

So it looks like this was released the other day (impluse at least).

Has anyone tried it yet ?

I've been thinking about this game too. Out of Eight is one of my preferred review sites. They gave it pretty good marks.

It looks interesting. I wonder how it compares to X3TC in terms of content and dynamic gameplay? Unfortunately, that seems to be the standard that I hold these open-ended space games to nowadays. It's not fair, but I can't help it. I've tried a number of different games (Evochron, Space Rangers, etc) and I always end up back with X3. A demo would be nice.

It's NOTHING like X3 or EVE. Don't get me wrong, I like the game, but it's much simpler and only on a 2d plane. It's much more of a ship simulator a la Star Trek.

Edit: And James isn't kidding in his review, the tutorial is laborious at best. Make sure you save throughout the tutorial cause you can (and quite possibly will) die.

Is the environment fairly static then? I think the reason I keep coming back to X3 is because there are always things changing and new things happening. Something that turns me off of other free-form games is that the "dynamic" things are usually scripted and limited in number; once I start seeing things repeat, I lose interest.

That said, I could still enjoy the game as long as my expectations are correct. Is the campaign long enough to be satisfying? Is there a lot of variety in the side missions and "sandboxy" stuff you can do?

I saw a video and it looked fun... but I'd still like to demo the game. Barring that, I guess I'll wait for a sale.

There's a demo for this now.

I noticed this hit Steam and is on sale. Has anyone given this a try?

I'm really considering it as well. The Out of Eight piece made it sound pretty neat, but on the other hand I usually make it a point not to buy anything that's not at least 33% off (or cheaper to start with), but at the same time I often wave that requirement for independent games...

I've got the rest of the day to decide, I'll post if I go for it and if I have any thoughts past the tutorial.

Debating on it, just to support the dev, but I think the upcoming (Q4 2012) sequel is more the game I want.

Guys, it's a pretty fun game, and I really enjoyed it. The tactical combat is satisfying, the story is batsh*t but they all are in games like this, and there are tons of pretty ships and weapons to buy. I highly recommend it.

I picked it up and have enjoyed it so far, although I haven't gotten very far. Definitely some rough patches, but they have ironed out some of Out of Eight's criticisms. The tutorial now seems to be skippable, and you can click through the tutorial dialogue as well.

Hey guys, did y'all wanna use this thread to talk about the sequel, or would y'all prefer it gets its own thread?

I need to hop back onto this bandwagon (II).

This thread.

Works for me! The sequel is out today, and I did some videos if that'll help y'all choose to buy it or not (hint: buy it).

If only I had the time (and at 53 the ability to sit on my rear for hours and hours without seizing up entirely) to play all the cool games there are, I'd be all over this. I need to figure out how to get a standing option at work so I can be seated more at home without ossifying.

Grab an empty shipping box or two from the mail room and put your laptop on that, Papageno. Push your chair back and stand for an hour or two, whatever is comfortable. Store the boxes in your cube when you are not using them.

Starpoint Gemini 2 is pretty dang cool. Worthy Freelancer replacement.

Never played the original, but this one rings all the right bells.

Freelancer you say! You have my attention.

Truthfully, I've been hugely interested in this for a long time. The Steam page describes RPG elements. What are these?

Perks and skills you can unlock with points as you level up. Also, think of it as a mix of Freelancer and Starfleet Command.

Hey Veloxi thanks for the vid. Picked this up on Steam sale this weekend because it looked real promising. Couldn't fathom the controls though so I was about to pass on it. Gonna try it out now. I'm kinda old school. Give me a pdf manual or keyboard reference.

Ohhhh, thank you for watching!

If you keep in mind this is far more Starfleet than Wing Commander you will do fine

Hey everyone - is this the correct Starpoint Gemini thread for part 2? Or is there a separate thread somewhere?

This is it man!
