Legend of Grimrock II

Pages

Out October 15. I really enjoyed the original, and this looks pretty appealing.

(For those who don't know; Grimrock 1 was a nice modern interpretation of the Dungeon Master genre, which first came out way back on the Atari ST in the 1980s.)

Preorderd as soon as I saw that trailer (they are using humble to sell it so there will be steam key ready to use when it's out). REALLY looking forward to this one!

Hmm, GWJ excitement level seems awfully low for this one. Does it not look as cool to everyone else?

You posted on a weekend, Malor. Traffic is slower.

Oh, yeah, good point, forgot about that.

I for one am thrilled to give this a go. I do think it's the kind of game that most people around here will pick up on sale "some time" to play in a dry spell rather than jump into at launch.

I know most people think of Dungeon Master when they bring up the first game but I've always gotten a big Lands of Lore vibe because of the speed of the combat and the way traps and secrets are presented. The more open world look of the sequel evokes that even more.

Wooooooooooo, oh sh*t, I hope Legend of Grimrock 2 isn't anything like Dungeon Master 2 which was a f*cking abomination.

I'm really hoping it's better than Might & Magic X.

I enjoyed the hell out of Grimrock the first, and I will certainly be picking up the second.

I found every secret in the first Grimrock in my single time through the game, and I'm still proud of that.

Legend of Grimrock 2 plumbs the depths in mid-October

Developer Almost Human has revealed that its classically-styled first-person dungeon crawl Legend of Grimrock 2 will debut on October 15.

Alongside the announcement, the developer also revealed that pre-orders for the game are now open, and those who purchase the game within the next 22 days will receive a 15 percent discount, which reduces the game's price to $20.39. Additionally, fans who somehow missed the original Legend of Grimrock can purchase a bundle which includes both that game and its upcoming sequel. Like the aforementioned pre-order this bundle has also been discounted, allow players to grab both fantasy adventures for a total of $25.49.

Pre-ordered.

I'm looking forward to this one, and am quite hopeful. For me, at least, the first one came out of nowhere and I liked it a lot.

Have they announced whether the total gameplay time for the sequel is expected to be longer than the first one?

Was I the only one who loved Grimrock initially and poured over 30-40 hours into it but... never got to the end. And for some reason can't get back into it. It's one of those games that if you break immersion, it'ss hard to get back into it.

Still I will get Grimrock 2, just not sure I want to pre-order just yet.

I'll probably preorder it when it gets a little closer to release. I don't do preorders too often, anymore, but I had a good enough time with Grimrock 1 that I'm willing to chance it.

Plus, it's not that expensive.

It's one of those games that if you break immersion, it'ss hard to get back into it.

The bottom levels in that game were really tough. That one room that locked behind you, with a million spore creatures, was incredibly hard to survive. I hope they tone it down a little in the sequel.

Sadly, that almost never happens. It seems like devs almost always think that sequels should be more difficult.

It's possible. The immediate sequel to Dungeon Master -- Chaos Strikes Back -- was tougher and the levels were a ton more complicated.

I didn't put nearly that many hours into it, but otherwise, this is word for word my experience with the first game. I'd start it back up again and try to finish it up, but just lately I seem incapable of finishing up older games when I try that.

That room was completely optional as I recall, but yes, almost definitely the hardest thing in the game. I can't remember what you got out of it, some fancy weapon I think.

That was the "warrior challenge" part right? I tote's skipped that part when I played.

Might have to consider a revisit of the first game before 2 is out but there's so much else to play at the moment I dunno if I'll get around to it.

Yes. It was really really tough and best to avoid at first, come back when you get some more XP under your belt. Also it was called the warrior challenge but I used a lot of magic.

I'm not sure. It's been too long. All I remember is a locking grate, a lot of spore creatures, and panic.

F*cking pre-order email is sitting in my inbox, taunting me.

"Your Legend of Grimrock 2 order is ready"

Bullsh*t! I can't download it! Don't tell me it's ready!

For me the most frustrating part of the game was the final boss, but I guess that is to be expected.

IIRC I had a human fighter and minotaur fighter up front, a human rogue and mage in the rear. I thought about doing the game solo with the secret character, but never got around to it.

Or you were bad and never found the optional room!

If I recall you needed to get through some hallways trapped with fireball shooters and guarded by respawning crabs and efreets. Once you got to the end, if you had some macguffin or had fulfilled some other conditions you were teleported to a large sealed room with dozens of little and large tree people and mushroom people. A combination of tough melee people and ranged people, so you would be fenced in and attacked on all sides while other shot poisonous projectiles at you through their allies.

Final bosses invariably annoy me. By then I am usually just ready to get the game over with but they are so often exercises in frustration and memorization. Grimrock was no exception.

I remember that now. I basically did that room the same way--head to a corner (mage back in the corner and isolated from enemies) and fight fight fight.

I was crushed when I discovered what Grimrock's final boss was. Absolutely crushed.

I was completely bowled over.

Well, I thought that was it, but the creatures didn't look right. The room I'm thinking of was quite large, and rectangular, and I believe it was full of creatures that looked like mushrooms, and spat poison clouds at you. There were A LOT in there. And once you set foot inside, the gate locked behind you, and the creatures would do their best to surround and kill you.

The solution I ended up with (which took multiple reloads to succeed) was to run like crazy in there, grab a key off the ground, run back to the entrance gate and unlock it, and then fight them one at a time coming through the grate. Even then I had to run away and heal a lot. There were a ton of critters in there, and their poison clouds were very painful. (that's why I called them 'spore creatures', because I thought of the clouds as being infectious spores from the mushroom critters.)

In looking at that video, I don't recognize that part, and I may have skipped it. I believe my characters were much weaker than his. I did finish the game, but I remember working a lot harder at killing the fire specter things than he does.

I'm in a similar boat, although I think I only put 5-10 hours into it. Definitely not going to preorder in my case, since I'm already drowning in games I love. Will pick it up further down the track though.

3 days people!
