John Oliver is Amazeballs! (Andy Zaltzman is in his shed)

You know, if HBO let me do an Internet subscription to their channel, without requiring cable first, I probably would, just for John Oliver.

In Scandiland you can and I did. Just for John Oliver.

He is the sole reason I continued HBO past the initial free trial.

Most cable companies offer some weird minimal package that includes basically nothing but local channels and hbo go.

lifehacker tells a bit more. plus, maybe I'm wrong, but I heard the CEO of hbo is actually encouraging people to share their hbo go accounts. Or at least not fighting it.

The Weekly Sift on Conditioning (with reference to the most recent Last Week Tonight).

to "Internet plus" with broadband, about 10 cable channels and HBO (with HBO Go) for about $75 per month.

That's still pretty insane. $20/mo I could see. $75? No way.

Must you continually mock us with your idealized systems of government and commerce?!

Not precisely on topic, but:

HBO could clear $600 million per year with online streaming

I figured that surely I couldn't be the only person out there who would be willing to pay $20 for naked HBO without cable. The lowest-price package from EPB that includes it is $110/mo.

This analyst is agreeing with me, though whether he's right or not, I dunno.

I can only say I would totally do it for John Oliver's show too... and maybe to try Game of Thrones.

Holy f*ck. I believe I'm paying $180, including taxes and fees, for a triple play package with practically every channel there is.

Newsroom is really good too! I hope that third season comes out soonish.

Actually, I went back and looked again, and realized I'd misunderstood: the $110 option was including $70 for Internet. The by-itself cost for the minimum package for HBO is $93/mo. With Internet, it's $140. That's with 194 channels: for cable service, I think that's probably pretty good pricing.

So, my net cost increase would be about $70/mo (I already have Internet from them), but that's still way too much. I like John Oliver, but not that much.

I'm in the process of slicing and dicing my parents Cell/TV/Internet bill up to try and get it to a reasonable level.

The best option is looking like just convincing them to kill the Cable portion. Just cancel, kill it all return the DVR.

Go cold turkey into the streaming wilderness and never look back.

The Cell portion is pretty ugly also but with current contracts its not feasible to axe that just yet.

Only problem is that HBO is owned by Time Warner. You know, those same folks that provide cable to a large portion of the population?

Time Warner and Time Warner Cable are actually two separate companies, aren't they? If they're not, then your point is a little moot because they also provide internet to a pretty large portion of the population too.

Only sometimes.

John Oliver is taking on for-profit colleges, and it is practically orgasmic. And sad. But I love how he took Corinthian's legal warning and turned it against them.

Man, if Oliver learned one thing from Stewart, it's how to take an annoyingly long vacation right when a bunch of big stories are hitting at once. I'm glad he's back on.

Oh, since this thread isn't specifically about Last Week Tonight, I can brag about going to see him live in a couple of months. He's pretty great.

I guess I can also ask whether the Bugle is ever coming back. It, too, has been on haitus

They said sometime in September...

It'd be awesome to see him rant about #gamergate.

Oh man, it so would, but he might avoid it to avoid the absolute cluster of "betrayal!" screaming for using them to voice opinions on net neutrality.

Andy and John have so little interest in computer games I doubt it'd make the cut.

But Stephen Colbert....

This isn't the "Colbert is Amazeballs" thread now, is it?

(even though he is also amazeballs.)

Loved the Community shout out on last week's episode.

(For those unaware, John Oliver was a regular character on the show.)

And a week later, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau takes aim at Corinthian Colleges. Coincidence? Maybe, but I prefer to think that Elizabeth Warren thinks John Oliver is amazeballs too!

If Scotland votes to split, we can take their place?
