Middle Earth: Shadow of Mordor Catch-All

For some reason I thought this game was coming out early 2015. Imagine my surprise to see that it is coming out in 2 weeks. Why are there so many games coming out right now!?

Just saw Arthur Gies tweet about 30 games they're reviewing at Polygon in October. Just nuts.

Already preordered a while ago. SO looking forward to it.

I thought it would be more like Batman: Arkham City in Mordor, but AC is fine too. Sadly, I won't be able to afford to buy it. As noted above, there are WAY too many games coming out in a short period of time.

I just watched the trailer for this game for the first time last night. I think I'd mentally written it off as another Lord of the Rings high-end shovelware game for some reason. Now, I'm interested. Mind you, not $50 interested, but interested. I'll keep an eye out for a good sale probably some time mid next year.

I don't know if the lack of advertising for SoM has been because of Destiny or because it's not very good. I hope it's not the latter, because it the nemesis system looks like an original idea and we need more of those in games right now.

I found this Twitch playthrough :

can see myself getting this , looks like fun.

OK hadn't really had this too much on my radar but that stream looks great. Think I'm in. Now to find time to play all of these awesome games....

A bit concerned about this :

“We’re very focused on the PS4 and Xbox One… We’re focusing on the next-gen platforms, and then going to do whatever we can to get as much as possible on current-gen.

“To break it down, some of the stuff we’re pretty confident will still be very similar on current gen: the core mechanics, like combat, stealth, ranged and movements; the basic control and gameplay, that should all be really solid. What it won’t have is the same level of depth and variety and simulation within the ‘Nemesis system’.

“The story will be the same and the core gameplay will be the same, but [the 'Nemesis system' is] just so huge in terms of content, calculations and AI we’ll just have to try and get as much of it in as we can.”

I have a PS3..

Well, I mean, I know it sucks but that kind of thing is only going to get more and more common over the course of the next year or two.

Up until now there have still been some games that were targeted at the old consoles and just updated to the new ones. As more and more games start getting developed specifically for the new consoles any versions seen on the old systems will tend to lose out on features in one way or another. There will be some jank. If history is any indicator there may even be a game or two that aren't even the same game at all despite sharing a title.

On the other hand as a ps4 owner I'm glad they aren't gimping the entire game because it's coming out on the old consoles. I was going to get this on PC but then I figured if I got it as a physical disk on ps4, if it's horrible I can just sell it.

I'm interested to see how much the nemesis system actually has on the game. It sounds like it could be interesting, but my gut says it's one of those "sounds good on paper, but has such a subtle impact that you can basically ignore it" features.

The rest of the gameplay definitely looks like Assassin's Creed: Mordor, which could definitely be cool if they do it right.

Ok, well that doesnt matter anymore as I just ordered a PS4 Destiny bundle.

I know what you mean, but I suppose that is always the gamble.

It does look so much like AC, but the combat looks like it could be a tiny bit better.

I love the idea of the nemesis system, I really like games that have that replayability to them, I hope it works well and that you dont just keep seeing pretty much the same personalities all the time.

oh , I found a page on reddit that has several videos of gameplay.

I hope the nemesis system works and is cool. I'm in wait and see mode on it because it's reliant on your actions changing AI behavior in ways that may or may not be really visible, and if they are visible, may not be visible on a single playthrough. These "your actions will change the world around you!" features have been talked about in other games, but nobody's managed to make them really worth it, and they usually get forgotten about when the game is released. We'll see if this one can pull it off.

I was down on this game when they revealed it (too derivative), but I watched some of that Playstation video and I think I'm in. Looks impressive and it seems like, although it's certainly cribbing a lot from Ass Creed and Batman, it does enough new stuff to be worth it. Having a new setting for this style of game will help too.

There was a Reddit AMA by the devs. Apparently there are three major areas in the game, two of which have been in gameplay demos. Makes me think the world is a bit small and you'll constantly be going over the same areas again and again.

There wasn't that much interest in the AMA and the devs didn't get very good questions, so there weren't any interesting discussions about mechanics really.

I'm wondering if this will be a title to dip into now and than, rather than one which will will stay in the machine.

I pre-ordered this through greenman and I'm really hoping I don't get burned. First non-franchise pre-ordered I've done in a while.

Nvidia is doing a 24 hour game stream now that is supposed to include some PC gameplay of this, but when I don't know. Hopefully it will be singled out on YouTube tomorrow or sometime. I'd like to see that.

I'm pretty excited for this title. I've been waiting for this format for a long time. It was only a matter of time for it to arrive. It was screaming to be done.

With a little trepidation, I preordered on Green Man Gaming too. I had a 23% off coupon, so i figured what the heck. Monolith isn't a fly-by-night operation. Even though they're a pawn of Warner Bros., it looks like they've done a good job with this, based on what I've seen so far.

Did they send you that code? I usually get vouchers from them, and I didn't see anything recently from them. After watching a few videos, I think I'm down for preordering as well, if I can find a deal on it somewhere.

Yeah, they email me one-time-use loyalty codes periodically.

IGN: Nine point three.

The best thing about playing Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is that it makes me feel over-the-top powerful without sacrificing the fear of defeat. It’s got great free-flowing combat and a good-sized, good-looking open world full of Lord of the Rings lore to find, but what makes it special is what’s going on in the background: an intriguing hierarchy of enemies that gives every victory and defeat extra meaning.

This is a crazy month for me gaming wise.

Still playing divinityOS
Wasteland2
Destiny
Fifa15 arriving today
Shadows of Mordor next week.

I'm like a pig in sh*t.

Tagging for when I eventually crack.

Eurogamer: 8/10

It's in this attention to detail that Shadow of Mordor reveals itself to be concerned with more than just lopping heads off overconfident orcs. Its open world doesn't always feel as big, busy or varied as you'd like it to - an understandable problem given that much of Mordor is a barren wasteland by definition - but you see Tolkien's uniting influence running through everything from the darkened slopes of Orodruin on the horizon to the skittering ungol underfoot.

A new in-depth (well as in-depth as you can get in under nine minutes) trailer about the game from WB:

All the good reviews have me pumped for next week.

Edit: So pumped I said it twice.

Aw yea!
That video nailed it. What an amazing system. So innovative.
