NFL 2014: Week 2

I dunno.. I was even less impressed with the Niners after that loss than the Dallas win. Bears had almost nobody left to play defense and they still managed to shut down the offense in the 2nd half.. as well both WR's for the Bears looked like they were running in slow motion they were so hobbled.. and yet still managed to make play after play.

I think the Niners will improve as the year goes on just like last year..but right now I think Arizona gives them a good run for 2nd place.

Yup.

Too much 49ers apologizing going on.

The Bears were by no means 100% either.

Vikings reinstate Peterson

Their statement.

edit: They are deferring to the law cause you know thats their safety blanket to pretend they f*cking care about these problems but actually cant stand up and be proactive.

Don't smoke weed tho!

This is going to blow up in spectacular fashion. The Vikings are underestimating how horrified people are by the pictures of this poor kid. They are going to be roasted alive.

Also, f*ck the Minnesota Vikings.

I just dont get it.

Couldn't they just suspend him indefinitely. Have their own legal experts weigh the situation. Have the NFL come down with their suspension. Subtract the games already served. Let the courts catch up in 2015 or whenever.

Let us go back to watching the NFL and not feel so dirty?

I understand deferring to the courts when its a situation where theres a chance of 0% guilt. Here they are deferring pretty much to see how severe the courts think this is. Pretty much the exact situation where the NFL and Vikes can stand up and say 'this is wrong, heres your suspension/ban, let all you other players take notice'. Instead they firmly have their hands under their asses.

Well put. This is where the NFL commissioner, with his personal conduct policy is supposed to step in.

Goodell after Roethlisberger incident wrote:

"You don't have to be convicted of a crime," Goodell said. "You will be held accountable to that standard, and we expect them to meet that."

That standard is looking lower every day.

On the other hand, Adrian Peterson runs the ball pretty far when you give it to him, guys. Further than average.

I'm at the point now where I'd rather remove the commissioner from the equation entirely, and just rely on the legal system or the team for punishment.

In terms of scale to the NFL smoking weed is like going on a 3 state 20 body murder spree.

And that's what happens when you call yourself San Francisco but you're really in Santa Clara. I get the Giants/Jets don't even play in the same state, but the GW Bridge is a lot closer to MetLife than the Golden Gate or Bay Bridge is to Levis. I didn't catch the beginning of the game on TV, hopefully they had as many of the lovely sights of San Jose and environs (Google/Apple HQ?) displayed as they did of SF when they broke to commercials.

If they continue to lose at home hopefully someone comes up with a witty curse name appropriate to San Francisco.

San Francisco 49ers of Santa Clara. Maybe the LA Angels of Anaheim have a few tips.

Especially since they lost the day before this descision is made.

It was very apparent when at the stadium that you were not in San Francisco.

There was no mold or hobos anywhere.

Curse of the Moldy Hobos it is!

One thing that folks need to keep in mind when drug usage comes up is that it's not just the league setting that standard. Those policies are part of the CBA, and are set in place by both the league and the player's association. So, in a way, Josh Gordon is just as responsible for how his case was handled as Goodell and the owners are.

As for the whole domestic violence/personal conduct stuff, yea, hang Goodell and the owners out to dry on that. The handling has been totally incompetent and inconsistent, given that Ray Rice was essentially tossed out of the league without a conviction, when AP, Ray McDonald and others are skating by with barely a slap on the wrists for equivalent charges.

Minor correction: Ray McDonald has not been charged with anything yet. The police are investigating the incident, but no charges have been filed.

AP has been charged. Greg Hardy has been charged and found guilty, but has delayed any action by way of appeal.

I've come around to the idea that suspensions should be levied when a player faces charges. The current situation of doing nothing while a legal process unfolds is untenable for the majority of the fanbase. But suspending players before any charges are made is jumping the gun, I think. (Imagine if the Colin Kaepernick hotel stuff had happened during the season, and the league suspended him, and then months later the investigation wrapped up with him completely exonerated, but losing the season).

At the same time, the NFL does not need to wait for charges if they have clear evidence or admission of guilt. Rice and Peterson both fall into this category. Both should be suspended, not just Rice.

Hardy should be suspended.

McDonald will probably have charges filed against him, and should at that time be suspended.

Ray Rice is not being punished for punching his wife. He is being punished for embarrassing the commissioner.

As long as other players don't bring attention to themselves or have enough star power (or plays for a popular enough team) that no one cares, they can skate past this without much more than momentary inconvenience.

FTFY.
Being part of a union does not imply the same leverage as the Owners association (NFL).

f*ck the Vikes.

Makes you wonder about the full details of his son that passed away.

What he considers appropriate/reasonable means he could of knowingly let that son be under the care of someone irresponsible or at least set the bar with the mother very low.

For all their foibles, I've really enjoyed how PFT has been reporting on these issues. They are consistently calling out the teams for being hypocrites and not trying to defend the players.

Kudos to them.

I agree with this in the sense that at least there would be consistency.

Problem is that the NFL has got into this because they know we as fans care. They cant wait for every legal situation to be resolved to act.

We as humans don't want to be watching a bunch of pending criminals week to week. Its makes us question what were watching and the people we condone. Its ultimately bad for business.

But yes its getting pretty obvious as far as enforcing a morale code the commissioner and the teams are pretty awful.

"OH WAIT? WHAT? WERE LOSING SPONSORS?"

sadly it looks like the Vikings sponsors might clue them in on what the right decision is.

Another come back win for the Eagles not sure I take this for 14 more games...would love to see some fast starts.

He found out about the son that passed away roughly a week prior.

Yes. He did not know that kid existed until the kid was in a hospital bed.

The number of children Adrian Peterson has is actually a fact not known to the public. It has been suggested to be 7 or 8. Probably no one knows, if Peterson himself is finding out about them later down the line.

I dare suggest he doesn't hold parenthood in particularly high regard.

Trent Richardson - 3.8 ypc

I was told that Hoyer underthrew the ball to Andrew Hawkins that setup the game winning FG against the Saints. Wow, did Hoyer make a terrible throw or what?

IMAGE(https://espngrantland.files.wordpress.com/2014/09/saintsplay.gif)

Its not a 'good throw'.

It looks like a "OMG WTF HES SO WIDE OPEN JUST GET IT TO HIM!!!! GET IT TO HIM!!!!!" type of throw.

Sure if he hits him in stride like a good QB thats a TD. Instead it looks like hes just happy to get the ball to him in any possible manner so they are in easy FG range.

Average score in my work pick em pool this week was 7.56.
I got 7.

This is what happens when you get cocky and take the Titans, Jags and even gimme picks like the Bucs who kill you.

He doesn't want to risk a drop, or throwing it with any heat but being a bit off target.

It's just a lay-up that ensures Hawkins can adjust and bring it in.

It's a safe throw, which is why Hoyer is starting. Good enough to win.

Meh.

Radisson has dropped their long-running sponsorship of the Vikings, and the governor of Minnesota has publicly called for AP to be suspended. The Vikings Facebook page appears to be about 95% leaning towards rage and disgust he's been reinstated. Things appear to be getting uglier by the day.
