Google Chrome catch-all thread

Arise ye not quite dead thread.

I need help. Every time I use my VPN, browse with Chrome, and then stop using my VPN, the next time I use Chrome it ALWAYS asks me if I want to keep using google.com or us google.com.hk. I haven't been able to find a way to stop this. Please assist!

Second. For some reason being in China makes Chrome (or google.com, not sure) think I should be using the basic image search because I'm bandwidth restricted (didn't realize 10Mbps was the new 56k), and it never remembers that I want to keep using the standard image search with the hovering and the expanding and all that. Same deal, how do I get it to remember?

My guess is that that's Google.com, not Chrome, causing that behavior. Can you duplicate it with Firefox? If it happens in Firefox also, then it's definitely a Google.com thing.

Ok I'll try this evening and see what happens. I think the first problem (always asking me if I want to use google.com.hk) is Chrome though, since the message appears in that yellow dropdown bar that appears below the address/bookmarks bars, rather than on the page itself. Anyway I'll see what Firefox does.

I fixed this and I cannot for the life of me figure out where I found the answer, but it is definitely a Chrome issue. Let me try to dig up that site with the tutorial (I remember it took me less than a minute, which is also probably why I forgot how to do it...)

Edit: Ughhh--I can't find it and I'm actually having the same problem as you regarding the second problem, but only at work. I have no idea why...

Chrome stop trying to be so helpful...

edit: tried google image search in ie9, same problem so it is google.com's problem. Yet I see no setting to change this behavior.

edit 2: the google.com.hk problem is specific to me searching in the omnibox, btw. No problem when I go to google.com. That is a pretty important detail I forgot.

That there is because of this thing here:

IMAGE(http://dl.dropbox.com/u/23424069/Dropbox%20Screengrabs/searchscreen.jpg)

Which you can find by right clicking your omnibox and hitting 'Edit search engines...'.

And after a little googling, because I was convinced there's a way to change this without editing search syntax, here is the solution:

Make sure you've closed Chrome first.

1. Go to (windows 7) C:\Users\'your user'\Appdata\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data\ (everything after your user folder is hidden)
2. Open 'Local State' in notepad.
3. Locate the two lines that contain (they're very close to the top):

"last_known_google_url"
"last_prompted_google_url"

4. Remove .hk from the URLs listed behind them.
5. Save.
6. Have a cookie, because you're done.

Edit: After reading your first post, I realize this might not have been your real problem. That's my bad.

Ok, for some reason I wanted to test Chrome as a windows 8 (8.1) app. It failed. It would only show a green screen so I could not go into the settings and swap it back to desktop mode. I re installed all kinds of stuff. After reading some, I finally was able to get it back in desktop mode BUT desktop icons won't launch plus whenever i click a link in an email it does not open chrome either. I have to right click on a chrome icon and tell it to open in a new window.

This is frustrating and i won't chrome back! Any ideas?

I had similar issues. I chalked it up to the fact that I was using ModernMix. I couldn't even run Chrome to switch it back to desktop mode. I had to do a full uninstall/reinstall.

Have you tried that? If you sync your account with Chrome all your settings and plugins will also be restored.

I did try that. It did let me get chrome working in desktop mode but the icon and mail links won't work.

Well weird, I was vacuuming the bedroom and had a breaker trip. After resetting the breaker and turning my PC back on, Chrome is now working properly!

That's weird.

Dumb question: During all that nonsense, had you tried rebooting? It works wonders sometimes...

i was pretty sure I had but not sure at what point and what I may have did after the reboot.

Thank you google for FINALLY implementing decent high res font handling in Windows. And a 64 bit client.

Anyone know if you need to clean install the 64-bit version? I'm guessing it won't automatically update from 32 to 64 bit.

After doing it, I can confirm that you'll need to manually install the 64-bit version. The About page will tell you if it's 64-bit, but not if it's 32-bit.

I just installed the 64 bit on top of my old 32 bit after downloading the installer. It even relaunched in 64 bit with all my 32 bit tabs open.

Waaaaay overdue, but glad it finally happened.

Installed 64-bit, and some fonts on this site are looking odd, including:
popular forum threads' thread titles
tags
sigs
the links under my username

Letters look spaced slightly too far apart and a bit too tall.

Now

Anyone else experience this?

No standalone 64-bit install

To make it easier to see the difference (bottom is before, top is after):

It looks like character smoothing to me.

That post confused me as well

Is there a major improvement to going to the 64-bit version?

... it's 32 more. /spinaltap

Now I also wait for the Mac version...

That link offers to download an installer, which bootstraps the actual installation over the internet. My corporate proxy is not letting that traffic through. So, I need a full, self-contained, "standalone" setup package. It's been available for 32-bit since times immemorial, but not available for 64-bit yet it seems.

Ah, my bad. That makes sense.

Is there a Chrome hotkey for the Apps button in Chrome?
