Google Android catch-all

Anyone have a dead simple guide to installing Cyanogen on an s4, btw? Apparently it's not one of the devices that's super easy to install to. I'm already rooted, FWIW.

If you have a Windows (EDIT: Or Mac!) PC, you can use the installer. It works very well.

It appears that AT&T s4s aren't supported. The only method I can see that is supported is flashing from recovery mode. I'm sure I can figure that out, but it seems like a lot more work.

Edit: So if I'm going to try and install from recovery, any tips on how to back up my phone first? No idea how.

If you are rooted you should be able to flash a recovery like ClockworkMod http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki...
I did it via Rom Tool box.
After that you boot your phone while pressing the hardware menu button, power and volume up to go into that recovery. You can then just make a backup to sd to be sure not to break your phone.

Thought about this while in the Android games thread. Is Google launching a new Nexus 7 this year?

I kind of expected it at I/O. But now that they're rumored to move away from the Nexus brand in general and toward the "Android Silver" program, there may not really be a need.

As an original Nexus 7 owner, I'd kind of like to see a Nexus 8. I think slightly bigger would be about perfect. Don't want 10, but 8" might be nice.

I don't know if there will also be a Nexus 8, but there is a Nexus 9.

Hmm. One of the most compelling things about the Nexus line is the price. If they can continue that into that form factor, awesome. I don't remember the Nexus 10 being that much cheaper than Samsung/Asus of the time.

Question.
A few days ago, my phone (Samsung Note 2) started getting really laggy.
I checked my available system space, and that's normal, and I've run some virus/malware scanners, which came up empty.
I've been looking at my ram, and it doesn't seem too bad (50-75%).
Any suggestions?

Do you leave your phone powered on 24/7? If you do, reboot the phone once a day.

Does anyone know of an app that would let me create macros and then a widget to execute said macro. For instance, if I'm leaving work and want send my wife a text, on a daily basis, that I'm leaving, I'd like to just press an icon to execute it.

Edit: I don't want it to execute based on a set of circumstances, just when I tell it to.

Taskr Pretty sure you can make Widgets, I don't use it any more, but that's what I used to do.

Yeah, I have Tasker and I haven't figured out how to do a single damn thing in it yet. It is my own fault as I don't have the attention span (or desire) to sit through an instructional video teaching me how to use an app.

But I found a solution - The Pressy has functionality for just that case. I just programmed it send the message text that I wanted to my wife when activated by a certain button press sequence. It was incredibly simple.

Trigger has this functionality and a pretty easy interface.

My s4's ability to use mobile data seems to die at least once a day. Rebooting, or even just entering and leaving Airplane Mode will fix it - but in the meantime, I've missed emails and WhatsApps, etc. Any tips?

Mine if it gets a really weak signal for long enough will just shut off 3G data. I think it might be the Snapdragon battery saver app I use, though. I just toggle airplane mode to fix it.

It only happens in a building at my old job, never saw it happen anywhere else.

My Nexus 7 always felt a little too small.
My wife's iPad 2 always felt a tad too big.

I wanted to see how 8" of tablets felt.
nVidia's Shield Tablet might be what I'm looking for.
Also, $300 is not too bad...

I don't love what I've read about that battery life.
Otherwise, I'm sold.

Running Andriod 4.4 on a S3. Is there anyway to micromanage notifications from different applications outside of application-specific settings? I have one app that's constantly reminding me of things (Star Realms) and there's no setting inside of the application to turn off or alter the notifications at all.

There is. Hopefully that app obeys Android's standards and doesn't make annoying sounds anyway.

I did this weeks ago. Wish I could turn off buzzing but leave on icons in the notification area, though.

Has the Chrome browser just totally crapped its pants for anyone else about 2-3 updates ago? Whenever I switch between tabs pages that normally refresh go blank, and inevitably I can't even reload the tab or enter any new URL. Only solution is to close the tab and open a new one. Chrome is totally broken for me for now, but Naked Browser is working well in its place.

Yeah the performance on it seems terrible lately. I got so frustrated yesterday trying to load something and I just gave up.

Figured it was just my phone being too old at this point. But maybe it's the app.

I haven't updated my chrome app in a while. Sounds like I won't, now!

By the way, I know there are a lot of apps out there for sending files back and forth between computer and any/all mobile devices you have, but I want to throw a recommendation out there for Pushbullet. For a free app, program, and chrome extension, it's really nice. Using it to send drawings and documents between all my devices and really liking it.

Plus, if you're using IFTTT, you can set up a recipe involving Pushbullet.

So I accidentally took my Galaxy S5 into the ocean. It was submerged for 20 minutes or so before I realized I had left it in my pocket. It seems to have survived unscathed thankfully. All I had to do was clean some sand out of the headphone jack. I guess they aren't kidding about it being water resistant.

This actually got so bad for me on my Nexus 5 that I switched to Opera. Pages would just go blank so often it became infuriating.

WHEW!

I'm not having the problem with Chrome stalling, but my Note 3 has taken a nosedive lately in terms of battery life. No clue what happened.

Huh, was noticing the same thing with my Nexus. Wonder if some recent app or android update messed with the battery life.

Anyone know of the magic rain dance I have to do in order to get my Nexus 4 working with Windows 8.1? On my old Win 7 PC I had no problems, but on my new system Windows 8.1 does not seem to properly recognise the phone's storage when connected by USB.

The first time I connected it, Windows installed the driver, the device showed up in Devices and Drives and I got a message "Touch here to decide what happens to this device". Then it just disappeared from the list of drives. Ejecting and re-connecting does nothing. The device no longer shows in Devices and I've tried uninstalling in the driver and then re-connecting but nothing, I've also played around with Autoplay and reset defaults to no avail.

It's so long since I've had this kind of problem with Windows ... I thought this kind of crap all went away with Win 7.

I've not been able to get the Nexus 7 working with Windows 8 very well (if at all). Google is dropping the ball on drivers on the Nexus devices.

FTFY.

It's bad drivers. MS doesn't supply those. This is all google. This is a long standing issue they've not even tried to address.

Yeah, I've googled and found no satisfactory solution (that worked), yet I'm kinda stunned that this is a thing in 2014.

So, all I want to do is change the music on my phone ... there must be a way to do that. Can anyone recommend a method for wireless transfer?

I have a Galaxy Note 3 and this works fine. I transfer music just fine using iSyncr. Windows 8.1 to a KitKat (Android 4.4) phone. Is it maybe because of the version of Android? Or the model of the phone?

This sounds kind of like the issue that I thought Mannish solved for me by telling me to toggle my phone into camera mode or something.

Fedaykin98 wrote:

Just tried that - switching to PTP makes Windows see the phone's internal storage, but it can only see DCIM and Pictures that way.

I tried one of those mobile FTP server apps and transferred some music over wifi. That worked, but the app was ad supported and I'd rather pay for something trustworthy ... but will post in the appropriate thread for that. Thanks all.
