Hellgate London catch all

Same. I actually enjoyed the game, but from the video I saw doesnt look like much has changed.

I'm in the same boat with the lifetime sub. Hope they will be able to do something for us but its doubtful.

Here is their FAQs for the beta.

Q: Do players that got lifetime subscription from the other version get some incentives here in HG Global?

A: Most probably none since it's different companies but we'll still ask our higher management if they can come up with some. (Not promising anything)

They've released a client torrent.

Here is something fun to do while while waiting for the beta:

Compare the old skill trees with the new skill trees while trying to figure out what the new skills do using the Japanese wiki and Google translate.

The servers were up for a network test tonight and by pure accident I tried to log in. I played for about 15 minutes before they took them down.

Well, it sure is Hellgate. Warts and all. There is a heavy amount of front loaded tutorial and explanation of all of the controls and keys and doodads that is sure to be immediately forgotten but earns you XP just for looking. The station environments have been heavily modified with larger, outdoor spaces in use instead of the old stations. Makes sense considering how crowded those would get with idling adventurers clipping through each other 5 deep. An auction house has been added; there are arena fights; personal storage can be shared between characters for a fee. Basically, it's what you'd expect. Hellgate with some of the new features of a free-to-play RPG bolted on.

It is still obviously beta. Many of the items in my inventory are called "translation needed" and there seems to be some disagreement between the NPCs about whether I'm trying to rescue Dr. Fawkes or Dr. Fox.

I'm sure it's the same Guy.

I wonder if my Fawkes Force Five is still on my account. The one holiday they celebrated in-game was a single Guy Fawkes Day, which had an exceedingly obnoxious quest that completely filled your inventory with useless crap. If you tolerated it through to the end you'd get a little orb called the Fawkes Force Five. As I recall it did some nifty stuff.

Beautiful.

Did anyone catch the closed beta on Saturday?

I never got involved with the game when it came out. I was invested in some other MMO which escapes me at the moment. However, now that I'm fixin for more aciton-y MMOs (lookin' at YOU Firefall), this is a welcome diversion.

No dates on open beta or release for the US or Europe. Hopefully it's soon, I could use a shooty game!

I played for a few hours. I had never played it when it came out either, but I had fun. The tutorial was pretty bad though. If I was new to MMOs I would have been pretty lost.

Played the beta as well. I played the game back when it was released, it mostly plays like it did before. Some improvements for sure, but nothing huge in the early game. The rebalance of the end-game and removal of 'elite mode' probably makes for a lot better late-game experience though.

Still it is reasonably fun, just like it was back then. Very unpolished, but that is pretty much the state the genre is in sadly (except for Diablo). Like Sacred and Torchlight.

Main thing keeping me away from being enthusiastic about jumping into the game again is the "free2play" model with a cheat shop offering way more than just cosmetics & convenience upgrades.

Played some in the Beta and have jumped back in the the single player as well just to compare.

It seems like the slowed the beginning of the game way down. The addition of random bosses in each area after a certain amount of kills is a great idea for more chances at loot. But, in the first few areas its painful watching a bosses health slowly tick down while you kite them for 5 mins. At least let me get some decent skills and weapons before you throw a meat shield at me. Once you get a few levels in the change is great and means you get a loot pinata every zone.

I did like how they added a early quest to go test some weapons and armor which basically let you try out some of your classes late game skills and get a feel of how you might look at endgame.

Not a fan of the new face and hair options. I can see adding more Asian style faces but to also remove all the old faces and hair leaves you with less options than before.

The textures in general where upgraded all around and it looks nicer than before. Also had less texture pop in than I do running the old game.

Each class has 2-3 new skills and some skills have crossed over to the other class from the same faction (ie. Summoner now gets the poison tree from Evoker). Some skills have been rebalanced but overall the classes play the same as they did before. I rolled my old "Gunvoker" and have to say she plays pretty much the same as she does in single player.

Unfortunately its a whole new account nothing was transferred when flagship went under. That means you don't get any of your pre order or collector addition pets and armor.

Guess that makes strike 2.

wooh, major thread necro

I have been pretty heavily playing this over the last week and have been enjoying it. I really want to try and track down the Lost London mod but the website for it is down. There is also a trainer/mod maker called Reanimator that I'd like to get into.

Lost London increases monster density and champion density. It combines the skill trees so that marksman shares with engineer, summoner shares with evoker, and guardian shares with blademaster. (probably what I am looking forward to the most) And I think they loosened class restrictions to weapon types. In the promo video I either saw a cabalist wearing templar armor or a templar wielding a claw focus.

When this first came out, I had beat the end boss with a guardian but I never much delved into their skill tree because I was able to plod along with 2 spectral grenade launcher guns and the heal skill. Now I can't level one fast enough to get to the skills that let you block 75% of projectiles and reflect 50% of them back at the attacker. (there is so much that I missed)

I don't know if it is just that these arpg fpses have become old hat because I remember struggling with the loot pinata initially. Now, I have a burning machine gun that chews through anything on my marksman. I have a rocket launcher with 100% shield penetration on my engineer. (so nice) And I dual wield grenade launchers that drop a lightning field and a fire field on my guardian. (after a 3 second delay, everything rapidly becomes mince meat) The weapons aren't overpowered but they are very effective. The only classes I have problems with are the cabalists (evoker, summoner). The evoker can use her spells to plow through tough areas. The summoner is now more often finding herself backed up to the zone entrance and dying to the swarm. (and then respawning, zoning to resummon, then zoning and dying ad nauseum)

So it seems that the cabalists are the only classes that can't solo the whole game with only guns or with very little skills =(

Hellgate Global is pretty awful. Someone please make a true HGL sequel! I know there is lots of Borderlands 2 to play and trust me I have put lots of hours into that. But I think there is something to be said of the atmosphere and setting of HGL that distinguishes it from BL2. It is not that post apocalyptic zaniness is bad. I just prefer end of days horror more. (and specifically the hgl lore more despite the slightly confusing ending cinematic)

I think that's a Cabalist skill.

Hey! I bought a lifetime sub damnit...

I am going to get my money's worth even if it takes a lifetime! (is that what they mean by lifetime sub?)

Yea but they did not specify whose lifetime.... I am thinking a small sickly ferret in Cambridge....

Steam Greenlight: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfile...

Yup, this game isn't entirely dead yet over here.

I'm amused by the fact that their promo videos on the greenlight page are the original promotional CGI movies from before the first launch of the game.

Yeah, that's pretty bad. I clicked on them because I was curious how the game looked anymore, but TOO BAD FOR ME, apparently.

This is kind of fascinating... Has there been any ongoing development for it or did something buy the rights and code? (I've been secretly hoping with the resurgence of superheroes that City of Heroes might some day come back online. :))

I remember the recoil from sniper rifles wouldn't rock your character back and forth. It would rock it north and south so it was not fun firing at enemies east or west of you.

A bonnonon and I had a great time playing through the campaign together. It's not a good game but it was fun in co-op.

HanbitSoft bought the game for Korea back in 2008 and the game has been alive over there since then. They're also the company who snatched up Mythos [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mythos_(computer_game) ].

Anyway, the Korea companies who own the property are working with Redbana Corporation to bring the game to the world along with a new chapter to the game.

I played this for a bit but I tend to recall it as a kind of mindless action game that I listened to WTF podcasts while playing. Whenever I see Hellgate I immediately associate it with Marc Maron's voice. Of course I also associate the Lovage album with Star Trek Online so... yeah, that happens with me and MMOs a lot, apparently.

Yeah they made some nice changes to some of the skills like being able to summon all your elementals at once but the game became much more grindy in the conversion to f2p. And which is the last thing the game needed.

And crazy as it sounds, with the incredibly detailed bits on the unique character armors, the game looks dated now.

Plus, it still has the crippling identity crisis on whether the game is weapon/loot based or spell/skill tree based. (which the more successful games like Borderlands 1+2 have locked down competently)

Interesting - I was one of the "Halloween Suckers" that bought it on release day. Almost bought the lifetime sub too. I definitely liked the story of it. The F2P version is ok, but as observed above, is even more grindy than the original game was. I'd probably put it on the same level as Path of Exile, except for the visuals, Hellgate is lower in that department (of course it's got some age on it too).
