Random thing you love right now that doesn't deserve its own thread

Fresh, neighbor-grown corn on the cob and sliced cucumber from my garden for lunch.

Today is my birthday! We just came back from Diggerland USA and it was really fun.

They say it's your birthday!
We're gonna have a good time!

I survived my first week at my new job. One of my coworkers put this on at high volume on one of the PCs while we were setting up systems; it's kind of infectious.

We have noticed the decline of honeybees in the area over the years, so when we saw a miner bee house at the garden store, we picked one up. It was around $20. I hung it on the front of the house where our flowers and soon-to-be herb garden are.

Since the end of May or so, we've had tons of activity. Close to 20 tubes have been used; that's over a hundred larva. A number have been used more than once - used, opened, then sealed up again.

Miner bees don't sting - if they get pissed off, they might bite. But they don't endanger people who are allergic to bee stings, and they pollinate like crazy. They live around 2 months or so. And frankly, it's cool to watch them do their stuff; they don't seem to mind people coming right up to the nest.

So if you want some pollinators, and you're in an area where miner bees live, hunt up or make a nest for them to give them a safe, pre-made home. Your garden will thank you.

Sorry it's a day late...

I've not noticed a decline in honeybees in my area (never really noticed them in the first place) but I do love going out to weed and check up on my garden in the morning and watching the honeybees do their thing.

Also, I love northern Michigan cherries. The sweet cherries have just ended, and damn they are good!

Into the early 80's or so, in summer, there would be many days where you'd have a field of clover or alfalfa or something with a honeybee in just about every square yard. It was impossible not to notice them (especially if you habitually went barefoot...). If you didn't live through it, well, what's typical today is not historically normal. And to make things worse, the number of managed colonies (which are hosted by humans and can be used for agriculture) is half what it was in 1940... It's dropped from 5M then to about 2.5m today. Since the 1980's, losses of a third to a half of a colony every winter (and sometimes up to 90% or more) are normal in North American apiaries.

So it's obvious that we need to support alternate pollinators as much as we can.

Jeez, you're making me want to get a setup and put it on my apartment patio.

I think the bees might starve.

My wife asked me out of the blue last night if I would be willing to go to ComicCon sometime. I was like, "f*ck yeah!" There may have even been an erection involved. She's been digging the shows, cosplay, and pagentry that she's been following on Facebook.

I called my ISP to set up internet after our move - they ended up offering triple the speed and the addition of a phone line for $5 less than we're currently paying!

I see you in the loathe thread when that special deal runs out.

I'm now in that situation. Paying $80/month for 40mbit. I'm thinking about calling and lowering it to 20mbit.

The Criterion Collection

Releasing many amazing (and mostly artsy-fartsy) films, but the packaging, artwork, essays... MMM-mmm! Worth actually owning movies on physical media

Yup.

My annual block party was yesterday. My neighbors may be the most civilized suburbanites on this earth.

Oh. My. I want one.

Wait, is that just soft drink syrup and carbonated water? If so, forget what I said. I want a pony keg stroller.

I'd put money on that being beer. Lots of home-brewers use the Corny Keg size that is/was common with Coke and Pepsi. It's cheap, can be found everywhere, and is a good size for home methods.

Things I love right now-- work is good, I determine my own schedule and that's kind of awesome for me.

Thing I REALLY love right now? Clan Underhill is expanding in late March or early April! That's right! Mister and I are expecting our first child together, and we couldn't be more excited.

Also: it's fried pickle time at Zaxby's. Awesome.

I saw a similar container once, it actually had homemade ginger ale.

Congrats on the pregnancy! Is that awesome timing for the fried pickles, or what? Do they go well with fried ice cream?

It is exceptionally awesome timing. As for the fried ice cream, I dunno... But now I'm thinking about it...

Congrats, Sister!

Congrats Sister!!

Congratulations Sister!

My wife started working from home 3 months ago. Her company said they were going to reimburse her for phone + internet (105 megabit). The best way for us to do it was to get cable and ungodly amounts of channels with it. I wasn't sure how her work would figure out what to give us back on the bill but she was told to submit the entire bill and they would figure it out. Turns out they are giving us 100% of the bill back. That means free internet and cable. WOOHOO!!!!

Dancing about in happiness!

Does it help if I bold the relevant part? Of course it's beer, silly.
